Tirpitz - Citadel - Nerfed?
Unintentional_submarine replied to Crusherheads's topic in General Discussion
It didn't help the USN BBs much because their armour wasn't really changed. Just the number of flat surfaces. Essentially the hitbox and surfaces now match the actual model. That has indeed helped with absolute bow on and stern on, but other than that it is going to be quite rare to find situations where there will be significantly different results from before. -
9.2km torps too I think it was.

That's a nerf for the 420s and a slight buff for the 406mm. That seems odd to me. Obviously the 420s were better than we expected if they needed a nerf while the 406mm needed a buff relative to each other. Apparently the 420mm had too good penetration as a reduction in speed and Krupp will lead to a fairly substantial reduction there (yes, the weight increases which somewhat counteracts the reduction, but not by much). Colour me confused. It can't be because both ships are too survivable to have such good guns, as the 406mm guns get a buff...

And it should also mean that SA now works when captains are retraining on new ships. Well... I assume as much. It will probably have to be tested. -

It's certainly an annoyance that hey are handing out BoS to DDs. But considering the alternative was to give a total re-skill, I think they used the path of least resistance. Think about it, if they had handed out BFT instead how many battleships and cruisers... and heck even carriers, would have been pissed. Now, I would have loved getting free re-skills on my captains, but to expect it it perhaps a bit too much. What I'm more interested in is the fact that Atlanta appears to have Radar now. That should change her up greatly. -
My 'theory' about Saipan was that she was a testbed for not only premium carriers, but for some of the setup for the British CVs. Probably not exactly like Saipan, the basic idea. They have done stuff like that in the past with other premiums.

As noted, dispersion is a fixed value per range per nation (and per line of course), so yes good/bad dispersion can indeed be a national trait. The German battleships weren't exactly known for their excessive dispersion values, but in the game they appear to have rather considerable dispersion. I'm not getting into how good one nation was at finding the range and start straddling, as that, within reason, has less to do with dispersion and more to do with external values such as quality of other equipment and the people involved, which I find ingame dispersion to be a less than good analogue for. So if the Italian or French battleships end up with an even harsher dispersion line than that of the Germans, I'm pretty sure it is down to other balance concerns. Or at least that's the idea, how well it will be implemented... yeah, that's another can of worms I don't feel we would be served well by, by opening yet. -

Justland 1916: The Archeology of a Naval Battlefield by Innes McCartney Not finished yet. In fact so far I have only gone through the wrecks of the British battlecruisers, Nestor and Nicanor, V27 and V29 and Defence. About to reach Wiesbaden. So I still have all the fleet action destroyers and the night engagement losses. Must say the wrecks of the British battlecruisers are most enlightening. They are combined with picture of them and the accounts of their sinking from many points of view. Especially the events surrounding Queen Mary are downright scary, but Invincible appears to have suffered the most spectacular end (even if her wreck is the most complete), and with one of the most hair raising accounts of a survivor. The main downsides are the lack of artistic interpretations of the wrecks as they are now (it would be highly useful to really get the sense of their decay), the relatively small images used (sometimes details in pictures are hard to make out from the dives, and the Harper Record charts), and it can be a little dry outside the accounts from the observers (I stress 'a little'). Basically it is obvious the man is highly competent and has spent an inordinate amount of time and effort on this book, but has lacked the support of a big publisher or a big wallet more likely. I find that to be a relative shame, but nothing in comparison to how well researched it is. -

I thought you meant taking the dispersion issues into account, which I'm pretty sure they won't. Neither the French nor the Italians. If either nation will have an unpleasant dispersion value for their ships I'm rather sure it is unrelated to any historical problems. My point was that overall WG has been sticking to historical values for the ships, excepting Kirov. The historical value for Richelieu is 800m/s or less, as the original suite was an unworkable failure, and was replaced as soon as this was detected. So the original setup might as well never have existed in terms of combat value. Obviously, in my personal preference I would see the American values, as I can't see the SD19 values as anything but unintentional and highly stop-gap. -

You know, I was just reading about him in a very detailed forensic book about the wrecks (bloody brilliant piece of work that one). The picture of him says a lot I should think. -

Sorry, you can't have it both ways. The higher MV was only attained with the initial French SD21 propellant charge. However after Dakar the use of SD21 was discontinued as apparently it's operating pressure was too great for the APC shells' base caps to handle, which then caused premature explosions in three of the four guns the SD21 propellant was used in. The weaker SD19 propellant didn't cause this and was kept in use until the Americans began their supply of new propellants. SD19 gave an MV of 785m/s and the US produced version 800m/s. So any dakka dakka hull would necessitate a lower MV than that of the German 380. And most certainly not the one attained with SD21 as it was wholly abandoned due to a 75% failure rate (only two of three failed in actual combat). I wouldn't be using the SD21 figures, considering it generated a much higher than expected pressure, and the fact that the shell used for it was incapable of handling it. Perhaps the later shells that didn't have the same foolish gas cavities in the bottom would have worked with SD21, but we will never know as it was a combination not used apparently. As by the time the new shells were made, it was already 1943 and propellants were already being supplied by the Americans, and the French hadn't felt the intermediate solution of filling the cavities with cement and using new base caps would provide enough protection from new in-bore explosions (it might have been, who knows). Honestly, I think it was the right decision to not risk it until new shells without this problem were produced. Heh, I was thinking, "what, Orion got scrapped after WWI... Ohhhhhhh the Leander cruiser.... derp" -
V Krasny Krym, what do we know about her....
Unintentional_submarine replied to tw53's topic in General Discussion
It's a possibility, but we have known about Krasny Krym (known as Profintern then) since a fair bit before the RU/SU cruiser line was leaked. So they would have had to split her off quite soon after modeling her. And given the absolutely insane stats she had at the time, it certainly didn't look like she was just an upgrade to Svietlana (with AFT she would have had more range than Kongo, extremely competent AA for T5, likely best in tier). So personally I don't believe she is an 'accidental' premium. Besides, the extent of her upgrades and the date of them wouldn't match the other T4s in the least, which would have been obvious from the beginning. Especially with their curious interest in position and size of range finder in relation to the range of guns. Because Krasny Krym was arguably the Forrest Gump of the Black Sea Fleet, it would have been somewhat of a surprise to not have her in. In fact a lot of people, here and on RU, got pretty dissatisfied when they learned that she would be named Profintern, rather than Krasny Krym. -

Depends on the officer... I have tried to find the story, but I haven't been so lucky yet, though I'm rather certain it was true. There was a British captain or low ranking admiral in WWI who was so reviled by the sailors that three of them decided to ambush him and beat him up. What they didn't know was that he was a very accomplished boxer and ended up beating all three attackers by himself. -
HMS Warspite - A Beauty and a Beast
Unintentional_submarine replied to Lightbaron's topic in Battleships
Since it is a gradual decline it is highly unlikely it has anything to do with any changed parameters regarding the ship itself. Considering that the number of players playing her has dropped significantly and the last couple of months she has been receiving a lot of flak in regards to her capabilities, it isn't unlikely that the better than average players have simply stopped playing. Not all at once, but more and more over time. They are more likely to visit forums and reddit and other places where people discuss the game's peculiarities, and so are more likely to have been exposed to the recent negativity. So when they experience something bad they are more likely to have a positive reinforcement to that position.- 134 replies

The first yes. That's an officer speaking to another officer. But the call for battlestations would not be kind. If there is anything the British did well, it was putting the lower ranks in their place. "GET MOVIN' YER MUTTS! BATTLESTATIONS!" -
German BBs+ tier 6 premium French BB Dunkerque stats in 0.5.9
Unintentional_submarine replied to Darth_Glorious's topic in Battleships
Indeed... Back when they nerfed BFT/EM/AFT I raised this subject. The Narvik and later 150mm DDs are going to have some pretty serious issues. Not only do they lose out on those captain skills, but the 150mm guns had relatively slow traverse (22.5 seconds for 180 degrees for the dual mounts, even slower for the single mounts) and a RoF somewhat slower than Blys. Add to that the German impressiveness that is HE, and these ships are going to suffer massively in fights with other DDs. Basically they will have a traverse similar to Gnevny with an HE firepower of somewhat less than her. Unless of course someone decides to use the mildly different shells, from those of the cruisers and secondaries, to make them massively better in the HE department. Basically the game is structured terribly for these guns and mounts, so now they will need a lot of weird buffs to make them competitive again. -
Range compression. All guns share the same compression so they retain the same relative speeds. And yes, the shells also follow arcs that would be correct for the shown ranges. Basically shells move faster but they follow the correct arcs in relation to the stated ranges in the game. Regarding the MV of the automatic 6 inchers. One can hope, if this is the weapon that end up on a T10, that they disregard this lowered speed. After all, plunging fire is barely even a thing for battleships, so it will never really be a thing for cruisers... well, we know from USN cruisers that it isn't a thing. So in the world we are playing, the British would never have reduced the MV as the entire reason for it would be faulty.

I fear that those who get so frustrated with stock Fuso will have an even worse time with stock Amagi. Range isn't as bad, but when put into T10 matches, the experience is considerably worse. Stock Fuso is cakewalk comparably, and is most certainly not impossible. Nobody is going to downright like it, but stock Fuso can be made to work. As noted take risks and sneak up using islands. No point in going into the open where the range will never be enough, unless it is to get into new cover. Having played stock Fuso and suffered as well as had fun, I can only say that it is an important stepping stone. Can you adapt? Or will you fail? And I don't mean in the sense of doing well in terms of damage, XP and so on, I mean in the sense of adapting the playstyle, and accepting that things don't exactly stack up in your favour. I knew it would be a short stint, so I accepted the limitations and tried to get the most of it. It is no use throwing up your hands and exclaiming to the world that it is impossible.

You have played her 34 times by now. That should be enough to form some understanding of the game. Like not torping at stupid times etc. I'm sure you don't do that, since your stats are better than such. However there is a truth to the 'hold back' stance people have. You are past that by now I would say, and whether you even had that problem to begin with I can't say. However there is much to learn still, as I'm sure you would agree. The problem with T8 and newbies (not necessarily noobs) is that there is an rather fine line between YOLO and camping. And newbies easily fall in either, and then get ridiculed or ripped at by the less diplomatic players. You learn with experience where that line is (and it is different for each ship), unfortunately many fall into the camping side, but that's another discussion. So in regards to the question if you should play her; do play her. But be conscious of the fact that you are likely the least experienced player of the tier in the battle. So spend a lot of time with your eyes glued to the minimap.

Question to WG about Arpeggio voices
Unintentional_submarine replied to Nishizumi77's topic in General Discussion
Heh, I know jack about Japanese... well not entirely, but functionally nothing. I haven't had any interests in anime (no, don't try to convince me, I still don't have any interest in it), so I don't know their personalities. But from listening to Hiei I got the same feeling as you present here. Aggressive, arrogant and martial. Especially the starting comments sound good in that sense. And it makes it that much more pleasant that she doesn't pitch her voice up, but rather growls. By far my most favourite of the voices so far. -

Unintentional_submarine replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
What? Just because you don't know about the overmatch mechanic or the HE penetration mechanic doesn't mean that I'm assuming here. I don't assume that the the 152mm guns can't penetrate 25mm plating, they just can't. Yet that isn't a problem compared to the 203mm guns that can penetrate 32mm plating (meaning they penetrate a whole lot more of the ship). Those are hard facts. Yet when squared off against each other the 152mm guns don't really do badly because of other factors. The same applies to the overmatch mechanic, with the exception of Yamato. It is a hard set mechanic that you don't assume about. It is what it is. And while both it and the HE penetration are obviously in favour of higher caliber guns, they are not all powerful. They are matched by other values such as rate of fire, damage after penetration, dispersion etc. You on the other hand just say "nah, I don't think so" with not a single shred of evidence or apparently knowledge of how this works. [EDIT] You know what, I wonder why I even bothered. I'm out. -

Unintentional_submarine replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
Ahhh... so speculation. All right. I'm giving you hard mechanics, and as to why they aren't a problem, and you respond with 'I believe'. We know from experience that these mechanics are not a problem in being practical or not, as long as there are other benefits. Such as rate of fire. You don't see people complain about New Mexico or Fuso despite both of them not having access to the overmatch mechanic due to their relatively smaller caliber. They do more than fine. And against ships that can overmatch them (well Fuso is lucky, she has bow armour) they can still hurt plenty. In any case, this is a balance talk, while we responded to the issue of 'progression'. Balance can always be tweaked. The 283mm guns have room for improvements in RoF and certainly in sigma and HE damage/fire chance. So it isn't as if it really matters. -

Oh dear... You do know that the Supertesters are picked from a wide range of capabilities right? They are not all top of the line. Some are, and some are most definitely not. And Scharnhorst's problems aren't down to her gun's capabilities when they hit. That much should be obvious from what we have seen so far. Let me tell you an interesting bit, that is somewhat hidden from most people. 203mm has an advantage over 152mm. It can penetrate 32mm plating, which is the main plating of top tier battleships. That means penetrations everywhere. That's more applicable that the overmatch mechanic, yet there aren't issues regarding ships not being capable of that. Why? Because these two mechanics, as long as they are overcome by significantly higher rate of fire, don't matter that much. And then there is Yamato of course. -
