[Gamescom-news] World of Warships - The "Lootbox"
Unintentional_submarine replied to Morgan_Gorgoroth's topic in General Discussion
Could you possibly find it for me? Because I didn't notice it. I have heard persistent rumours for a few weeks now that the German DDs have supplanted the RN cruisers, but I have yet to see anything from official sources. If they really have pushed the German DDs ahead (or pushed the RN CLs back) then it certainly changes things. -
Which forum members have you seen in random battles?
Unintentional_submarine replied to Cobra6's topic in General Discussion
Ran into Jethro_Grey again in a very muddy and ugly battle. We won, but not because of great play from either side. One of those battles you would just prefer to not have played. But I guess the enemies learned the hard way that you don't leave a Molotov at 232 HP. I managed two solo caps and around 60k damage at that HP, but that was about it. In the end it was down to our full health Colorado... full health when it was just him and our CV against their CV and a Mogami. How the hell he managed to stay full health (and for a while was further back than our Shokaku; bloody disgrace) I have no idea. It seems a battle turns bad when I meet Jethro... Hope to never see you again mate. -

If I understand correctly you wonder if you get all the benefits from both hulls? Yes, buying only the C hull provides all the B hull benefits as well. As to the price, you pay for the module's price and it alone for it. So if B hull was 100 credits and C was 90 credits, you would pay a total of 190 for both, but buying only C would only cost 90. There isn't an immediate cost reduction to buying the B hull, and in the end the reduction isn't worth it anyway (you get half the module's value back when you sell the ship again, so in my example you would still be down 50 credits compared to only getting the C hull).

And people commented on the potential issues of them leaving... Seems like those things happened, just as it looked like communication was on the uptake for the first time.

Dat Leningrad... 43kn... more of the implausible speed for the Soviet DDs. I mean the Kiev is already pushing it, and Leningrad only just managed 40kn, yet let's give her 43kn. Other than that she actually looks rather powerful. Not Kiev powerful in guns (turret traverse will be harsh), but better in torps and workable detection range (on par with Mahan and Bliss). Healthy HP pool (just shy of Bliss). Good rudder shift but Kiev level of turning circle. Seems like she is a sort of bridge between the other T7s and the Kiev. Which might make her incredibly good as she appears to take a lot of the benefits from the other destroyers and discard most of their weaknesses. -

Broken damage model?!
Unintentional_submarine replied to TheBigLanowski's topic in General Discussion
I'm reviving this thread as I just noticed something that fits into this. We have established that the sound is serverside, so the penetration sound is 'required' so to speak. It's there. So something did get penetrated, and we aren't dealing with a desync issue. It can't be full section depletion either as the Independence is simply not low enough for that. And finally it can't be a module hit as the Independence doesn't have any turrets or torpedolaunchers that can soak up the damage, while her AA mounts don't have the required HP to eat a 380mm hit and live to tell the tale. And the engine or rudder would be knocked out by such a hit (besides, the engine is in the citadel, so an AP hit there would have a rather more significant result). So what is it then? Well, I'm fresh out of explanations... aside from the hit markers are indeed wrong. And a lot of the stuff we have thought were turret 'soaks' were in fact just BS hits that did nothing. I'm still thinking that that Notser video with sic Yamato penetrations for 0 damage was a tad too extreme to just be down to the Iowa's turrets soaking up the damage. How unlucky would you have to be to hit all three turrets with two hits (any more and they would be permanently knocked out), and nothing else. It just doesn't make sense, just as this video doesn't.- 99 replies

GER BBs - a look at the fantasy upgrades
Unintentional_submarine replied to 1MajorKoenig's topic in Battleships
Yup noticed that too last night. Someone really didn't think it through. But then again with GK's turret arcs it is pretty clear they don't think all the implications of changes fully through. -

To me it looks like an Elite/Premium/T10 functionality for using useless XP. Take note of the 22k regular XP on the right side. 22k is not a lot, but it isn't trivial either. So paying that much to get something like 7 smokes is probably reasonably fair (though it is a very easily changed parameter). If there is a very small chance for some permanent camo, nice. But I really don't think that sort of thing is going to be part of it very much, and if so, we aren't likely to be able to trade them around for real money between ourselves. Just because Valve does this sort of thing in a certain way doesn't mean it is logical WG will do it the same way. At least not until there is something more concrete than "we want to implement lootboxes" and a short clip of 7 smokes being unlocked. -

It's a little crusade he is on I'm afraid. I can only say this: Watch his vast collection of streams (probably accounts for more than 50% of his games played for the last half year or so) and tell me with a straight face he is a 90% camper. -
They appear to converge around 10km, where afterwards the two 15 inchers sneak ahead, with Warspite overtaking Bayern shortly after. Essentially Warspite's penetration seems rather terrible and her performance has been relying on overmatching much more than actual penetration. That's indeed a bit of a shock. Moskva vs Scharnhorst is another one of those weird cases. Zao's guns start out terrifically, but fall off nicely, not so with Moskva. While considerably more modern (her shells are about 15 years younger) it still seems odd that she can overcome the differences. Scharnhorst's shells were considered rather optimised and quite modern even in the war. I think it is down to the incredible Krupp value and the very impressive drag coefficient. Moskva's shells appear to have less drag effect than shells about ten times the size, and that's weirdly backwards. Could it be that lighter shells have too good drag coefficients, in order to make sure they don't fall off entirely (losing too much penetration would murder the high tier German cruisers for instance)? And Moskva just benefits greatly as somewhat of an outlier? And then there is the case of the German 406mm vs 420mm, where the 420mm only pass the 406mm around 19km out, which is already a very inefficient range to shoot at, so makes little difference. Yet, the few people that have spoken up about the guns prefer the slower reloading, and apparently weaker penetrating, 420mm guns. They can't even overmatch any better than the 406mm as there aren't any 28mm or 29mm plates to overmatch. So I wonder why their experiences tell them something that appear to be contrary to these tables.

A very valid choice.

Stellar effort. Based on the case of Tachibana and her 68 degrees of normalisation pre-patch, it is a safe bet that normalisation is added after ricochet calculation. If it had been before ricochet calculation, then Tachibana would never have a single ricochet, and only had penetrations, overpens and non-pens. She did have ricochets. I think an interesting graph/list would be ranges where given ships achieve plunging fire (disregarding potential overmatch situations). I would be most interested to see at what the 'safe range' would be against various ships. Curiously the 'safe range' will be a case of < rather than >.

No skipping. Free XPed so I had Nassau, and spent something like 200 Free XP to get an upgrade. Pretty much the usual stuff. I'm saving the bulk of my Free XP for if/when I get a ship with a terrible stock grind.

Patch 0.5.10 and German BBs Incoming
Unintentional_submarine replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
The boar the better? Anyway, it is probably those overhanging boats on the side. I believe they actually impact the firing arc of the rear turrets a bit. Besides, they look utterly stupid hanging out there like the ship is about to go down. What I have been able to find out about them is that in port Nagato and Mutsu would indeed at times swing out boats on the davits. But it is inconsistent and I haven't seen anything that indicates they would do so while at sea. It's a bit like finding a picture of North Carolina at anchor with her turrets slewed to port, so in battle she always starts with them pointing to port. Seems they finally toned down the Dasha makeup and clothing. And can that poor Des Moines finally get fitted out? She has been having her AA replaced for so long... -
I rather like Estuary. I don't think I have had a single battle on it where I would say the map itself contributed greatly to bad gameplay. Shatter is one of those maps that can be absolutely brilliant, or absolute crap. And in Ranked only the latter. The idea was nice, but in the end it just ended being an even more constricted Two Brothers. Trident I find to be essentially good. But the spawns are a bit too close together. But if stuff doesn't fall apart right away, the map generally involves more active gameplay. However, now and then people leave their brains at home and we get the ring-around-the-rosie play, with the north force going east and the south going west. Usually happens in Standard Battles (urgh). Mountain Range is just bad. Bad with a topping of bad and a side order of crap. That spine in the middle does nothing good and the open map otherwise leaves few options outside of extreme static gameplay. Comically enough I find Ocean to be more engaging than Mountain Range (it sohuld be noted that I actually like Ocean), leaving me to conclude that badly placed islands are worse for gameplay than no islands at all. Okinawa and her Black Hole called A. That cap is just such a huge trap. It invites so many ships, and once there it is hard to get them out again (when on your team). It is pathetic how often 10 of 12 ships end up camping around those islands. Overall a rather bad map. Do like the divide between B and C, it is actually useful and doesn't remove options. The new maps... while essentially the same and boring, they are not imbalanced so I can only dislike them for not trying to break the pattern.

The latest Jingles video - rumour?
Unintentional_submarine replied to damo74's topic in Videos & Streams
Possibly, but why would they need to do it at gamescom? I have indeed heard rumours that CA cruisers are now behind German DDs, but only unsubstantiated rumours. What they could possibly do is announce the DDs, which would make at least some sense. Maybe a big preview? Personally I hope the rumours are unfounded. I really do want German DDs, but I want RN in more than that. And I say that as a non-RN fan so to speak. We just need the diversity. -
Scharn is now available on the Us server
Unintentional_submarine replied to Reisen__'s topic in General Discussion
See, this was why I mentioned being 'second' or not first is a good thing. We get NA to run all the stupid things for us. Of course I also mentioned that our wait shouldn't be too long, but the principal thing is that being less than first means we can see some patterns develop. Now regarding her power, I sincerely doubt she is bad, at all. Pretty much every review of her ranges from good to glowing. Only Jingles really stand out, and it isn't because he gave her a bad review, he merely said, and it might very well be the important part, "you need to be good to get the full value." Basically saying she is an expert's ship. And honestly I'm not bothered by the potential of having a ship only good players can make work. Not everything has to be forgiving. And it will naturally keep the population down a bit, even if the total population might be high. So we avoid World of Scharnhorst... nah who am I kidding, that will happen regardless. All that said, I'm not yet convinced she is that hard, but I guess there is time for me to become convinced. -

Well, I sort of implied in a WWII setting where the contact's bearing had pretty much already been established but the heading was as yet undetermined. It isn't the technical aspect of situation but rather the informal communication between the operator and his superior I'm looking for. Replace the radar with hydrophones if needed. Or a shadow in the surface at night with no radar. Heck put it in after the detailed contact report of heading and bearing (let's imagine the superior is less than the best at his job so he needs the implications spelled out for him). -
As noted you answered the question. I played both before the HE buff (maybe a few in Hipper after). But to play Hipper right is one of those things where there really isn't a single correct style. I would say I never found the groove as I did with Yorck. But what she does do to excellence is sailing next to the battleships, provided they aren't total campers, and sit at her max range. The AP might appear weak then (in penetration, which isn't wrong), but I have found to my great surprise that apparently Hipper can reliably citadel Amagis at max range. Move a little closer and it becomes impossible, until fairly close once more. Don't expect more than one citadel at a time, but they should roll in of the Amagi is broadside on. At 17km he isn't likely to either know you are there, or will discount your AP for the time being ( what you are aiming for is the upper belt that leads to the weather deck, pens always happen there). Once the battlefield is depleted a bit, it is time to push in. Hipper is excellent at getting those first 'oh crap' salvos on enemies. It is important to not push in too soon as the sluggish rudder, slow speed and high detection means she will have a hard time getting out again if focused. But use the traverse and fast reload to the max. That means, shift targets often, always go for the practical target. It doesn't work if you keep trying to slam that angled Myoko running away with AP. Even when he is turning to run, find another target. Use your rudder a lot. It is sluggish and the ship has a relatively wide turning circle. There is no 'oh he shot, I'll just turn away'. You have to have begun the turn before he shoots. A bit like the Soviet cruisers. But the armour is great against cruisers. It is easy to protect the citadel against them. Even the mighty USN 8 inch AP will have significant issues against all but the potatoest of players in Hippers.

Yeah that game... I determined that I would help you with some firepower, but then my buddies in C detected an enemy Roon in broadside position and I was then is a pickle, as it looked like you could use the assistance. Was a weird battle honestly. Nothing much happened to either side it seemed. Though I felt a particular kind of happiness at catching the enemy Gearing in my HAS, despite being on the other side of an island. Running parallel he was in it for around a minute before I could clear the island and finish him. -

What would an unknown ship be in French? Just interested. In English a situation could easily be imagined where a ship is detected by radar, but it can't be determined specifically. The radar operator then sees that ship doing a maneuver and tells the relevant officer "Sir, she is coming right at us!" What would replace 'she' is this case? Or is it a more complex answer where the gender is specifically avoided and it's something like "Sir, the contact is coming right at us!"?
