Indeed. New York is also longer ranged of course. It doesn't really feel hamstrung compared to the range of the IJN ships. The better armour and the more punchy guns certainly help in achieving citadels more commonly. Also, while it has one turret less, it has better angling potential. It can angle so that it has four turrets on target, Wyoming can barely manage to put the same four turrets on target, limiting her firepower much more significantly. New York is just better. The only thing that speaks against her is the fact that she can come up against more enemies that seriously outmatch her, and does so more commonly. But that's about it.

Nope. What happened in real life was that they added topedobulges (which slowed her to 25kn and caused hte entire battleship issue) in the first refit. In the second later refit they removed some of the pointless tapering armour from the bow and stern, and possible other non-important areas, and instead added stronger bulkheads, compartments and structural improvements (and gave her new engines again that increased speed back up to 30 knots). Her main belt protection wasn't touched, and I believe neither was her internal armour deck above the citadel area. Thus functionally she wasn't really made more resistant to penetrations overall, nor into the citadel, but each penetration was less likely to do as significant damage inside. That latter bit can't really be represented in the game as it is. Something is either a bounce, non-penetration, penetration, over-penetration or a citadel. Kongo remains incredibly weak against AP, and you absolutely must angle in order to survive. I ran some tests with the Aoba in the Training Room, and I could reliably citadel the Kongo out to around 7km with her 203mm AP. Admittedly this was with a good angle, but it just goes to show how important angling is to the Kongo. Thankfully after the hull upgrade her turrets have really good arcs forwards and backwards, making angling in her an easy task.

New Mexico - what am I doing wrong...
Unintentional_submarine replied to _FTD_'s topic in Battleships
Are you in stock hull? It seems that at least to some she is terribly inaccurate in stock configuration. But once you advance the hull, she should improve massively. And yes We are talking about T6 New Mexico, the one that is arguably among the most accurate battleships in the game. -
[Basics] Spotting mechanics
Unintentional_submarine replied to Sharana's topic in Newcomers' Section
Hey Sharana, this doesn't appear to be the case any longer. I got prompted to run a Training Room test of this, and planes only get detected at around 6.5km at best. I only got visual confirmation at 6.2km, but I allowed for a bit more for rendering, like when a ship pops up from behind an island. This was not a case of rendering distance, as the planes weren't visible on the minimap until I could see them. Admittedly it was only for one combination of ship and planes, Aoba vs Ryujo. It is not inconceivable to me that other combinations could have different results. However that too would mean the information is wrong. The essence is that the detection range for carrier planes does not appear to be the same as before. -
I need a lot more than just 3 reports per day.

Thank you for that one. -
Yes, though the 'banana' (nice naming) is only one of several ways it can appear. In fact the 'banana' is one the easiest to avoid as it tends to spread the torps away from you.

An easy modification than can cut draws in half
Unintentional_submarine replied to Siagor's topic in General Discussion
I'm well aware of the clock, and I'm one that prefers to secure a win, rather than try and run down the last two enemy ships, even if it looks like we have enough time. But even I sometimes get caught up in battle and suddenly look up to see 3:46 left. The warnings at the very least would allow me to be better aware of the time. And I know for a fact that there are a lot of people who are entirely unaware of the time in most games. If I die I generally stay and give time warnings, and the number of times the still alive people have gone "oh damn, better cap" or something like that, has convinced me that getting caught up in hte battle is very normal. There are people that simply don't bother, and it will never help them. But it will certainly help the people that want to play for winning. And I don't agree that ship classes tend to be less bothered with capping. What I see is that in Domination it is true that BBs and CV don't do it much. But in Standard and Engagement they do. -
Having now watched a German video on a battle on Hot Spot, I would say you have little to worry about. Yes, At times Tirpitz (and presumably Bismarck by extension) will derp their shots, and in fact in the video one salvo was madly spread. However, most of the time the shells were nicely grouped and if the uploader had been better with his guns, he would have scored significantly better (admittedly he ended up in an area where he saw too little action). Shorter range fire was as expected, good. Longer range was plenty acceptable. You won't see 8/8 salvoes, but like most other ships you can expect a hit at max range, if you have aimed well of course. What was really interesting was a North Carolina charging him for a ram. The torpedoes ended that pretty spectacularly. But even more interesting was the North Carolina unloading both front turrets into the flank of the Tirpitz at 4km. All six guns hit it looked like, and the damage taken clearly indicated not a single citadel, despite the hits being in the right spot. Base on that and QB's battles, Bismarck and Tirpitz are going to be nigh impossible for similar tier ships to citadel. And the torps... hahaha, the reaction of the NC was priceless. I'm not going to post the video as I have heard the STs are under strict NDA about this sort of thing. But you can easily find it on youtube searching with expected words.

CV planes still attacking AFTER CV is KILLED
Unintentional_submarine replied to klemi007's topic in General Discussion
Why? Why is that worse than torpedoes travelling across the map and killing minutes after the ship was sunk. The effect is the same and the action was pretty much the same too. The planes can't be controlled, so the CV skipper can't adjust the attack vectors. Just like every other post-death kill abilities.- 41 replies

Unintentional_submarine replied to Siagor's topic in General Discussion
Warnings at 10 and 5 minutes are certainly good, but they are mainly good for people who are already interested in winning over killing (within a reasonable time of course, capping after 6 minutes is just urgh). But one at around 2 minutes would also be good because people need to know that it is too late if they leave cap, to get it back. The kill-train sometimes forget the time, and so a late warning would also be nice. -
BB's need a huge buff against cruisers.
Unintentional_submarine replied to _x_Acheron_x_'s topic in General Discussion
I do, regularly. But yes, the Cleveland is much harder to citadel because the total area is smaller. Her armour and the position isn't really a problem for a battleship however. The shells punch through easily and will go through the non-citadel areas and hit the citadel at angles. The Cleveland is a problem mainly for other cruisers, that either have issues getting through her tough armour, or in the case of the Aoba or Furutaka, simply have too few guns to hit the citadel reliably. Once the Cleveland faces the Myoko the number of guns make the difference, and the IJN ship should easily deal with the Cleveland. In the hands of a good skipper the Cleveland is a great annoyance, but I'm not that scared of it one on one. If it is part of a team ganging up on me, then I am scared of it, and will focus it. Unless a torpedo ship is bearing down on me, of course. But hitting the Cleveland citadel? Not easy, but certainly not a big problem either. -
What the hell is wrong with IJN BB aim?
Unintentional_submarine replied to LadyGunner's topic in General Discussion
That's the thing, those terms are the actual naval terms. Splicing doesn't work because it has diametrically opposite meanings. Combining or splitting. Straddling comes from the dispersion patterns the guns took when firing on a target. Likes legs (multiple ones, but you get it) on either side of an object, the splashes towered around the target. Straddling, unlike ingame, was considered good, as it meant the range and lead was correct. Bracketing is pretty self-explanatory I should think, but in general was a more negative term (which was also applicable in other fields), where straddling was more positive (and generally only used for naval gunnery). Combing (sometimes called 'combing the tracks') a torpedo attack was only really applied to air attacks, and was initially used to describe turning into the torps, but in time it just meant any situation where the ship was parallel with torpedoes on either side. For instance Admiral Somerville commented on an Italian torpedo bomber attack on Ark Royal "We were combing one [torpedo] successfully". And in the report of Captain Tennant after the sinking of Repulse and Prince of Wales, he made use of it to describe the intensity of the attack. These are only easily found official uses of it, but it is an old term and is pretty fitting as well. The reason I mentioned it is because some like to call that splicing too, which annoys the hell out of me, as not only is there an established term, but that term is a hell of lot more descriptive of the action taken. Interestingly the Germans invented a similar term independently, though that time for the offensive action taken by planes, with a special tactic called "The Golden Comb", because it involved large numbers of torpedo planes abreast, so the sea would resemble a comb afterwards. -
In the module tab. Where you research hulls and planes and such. On the left side you will see the loudouts. But I have to wonder, the Zuiho starts with a fighter squadron, so at some point you actively selected to go without fighters.

New Mexico - what am I doing wrong...
Unintentional_submarine replied to _FTD_'s topic in Battleships
Well worth quoting, just for the general truth in it. Playing a battleship is a lot more than just angling and being accurate, it is just as much knowing when not to shoot. I know that the long reload make it seem important to shoot as soon as possible, but the opposite it the truth. Because of the long reload you hold back until you have a good shot (long range fire should pretty much be disregarded here). Once I got into a duel with a Warspite in my New Mexico (in CBT). We both adhered to this, and were both well aware of angling. Since we were on a direct approach, neither of us really wanted to angle out to let the rear guns open up until the other had done it first. I might even have held back a bit too long, in the hope that he would try to let the rear guns get in. In the end he got distracted by a destroyer and had to turn out. But I think we might have actually rammed each other since neither wanted to blink first and give the other an easy citadel shot. -
What the hell is wrong with IJN BB aim?
Unintentional_submarine replied to LadyGunner's topic in General Discussion
No, it is called straddling or bracketing. Splicing is what you do with cables. Don't listen to PhlyDaily or BaronVonGamez on these matters. They are entertainers (and good at it), but tend to talk a bit strange about things. And when you manage to go between torps, you comb them. Again not splicing. -
Guys, you get hung up on the dispersion stat far too much. I know, it is the only real number we have for an accuracy value, but we all know that it isn't the whole picture. For instance, Warspite has a terrible dispersion/range value, yet it is commonly seen as a rather accurate ship. Same goes for New Mexico. Meanwhile Myogi and Fuso have great dispersion/range values, but they tend to scatter their shots A LOT (Fuso has the number of guns to make up for it, while Myogi doesn't, leading to Fuso feeling more accurate). Nagato is also a great dispersion/range ship, but again her shots are generally scattered a lot at long range (and she doesn't have the number of guns either to make up for it). However, she is rather accurate closer in, more so than her long range inaccuracy would indicate. Based on dev comments and posts on the RU forums, it seems the guns have more than just one 'range'. The first of which will get buffed in 0.4.1, the one that is also a flat value (meaning it's dispersion is the same at any range within that). And then there are others beyond that. So it isn't unlikely that ships have different accuracies at different ranges, and thus the dispersion/range value isn't linear. Finally (from the same dev posts), the dispersion ellipse isn't filled evenly with shots, there is a marked concentration near the middle. Based on my observation of particularly the Warspite and New Mexico, I have begun to wonder if this concentration pattern might not be different from ship to ship. In the case of Warspite, the concentration is great, while for the Myogi it is somewhat smaller. So while Warspite's dispersion it technically larger, chances are that her shots will land closer to the aim point, but when they don't, they can drop a hell of lot further away. This fits nicely with my observations, as it seems sometimes Warspite sends shells on a holiday on another map. Likewise with New Mexico. Thus, I feel it is premature to talk about the accuracy, other than the dispersion seem high. Until we get more gameplay evidence, it is simply too hard to be sure it means bad accuracy at all ranges. The bit I saw indicated that long range accuracy was not good, but not significantly worse than either of Amagi or North Carolina, if at all (not saying it was good or that it wasn't possibly worse, it was just not clearly worse). Closer range accuracy was harder to determine, based on the very small sample, but it did look fairly good, with tighter groupings.
-
Based on QuickyBaby's stream, they won't get phenomenal accuracy. At least not at long range. However, it isn't any different from the others in that sense. Hitting at max range is always a bit of a lottery. The shorter range accuracy looked fine, but he barely got any shots off at around 15km, so it is hard to gauge properly. Now What I'm interested in is if the Germans get access to the reload boost/traverse nerf module. Reload would go to 22.88 seconds and traverse would go to 42.12 seconds (still faster than the fast turrets on the late USN battleships). That would be awesome. And it isn't as if something like that hasn't happened before. The USN BBs get the range module from New York.

Whats your most WTF moment you ever had?
Unintentional_submarine replied to Mister_Greek's topic in General Discussion
The site is great, but they have made T7-10 a pay-thing. Not entirely sure they can do that with WG property, but I guess we will find out. What I'm thinking happened is that the waves created a small depression so the water didn't cover a very small bit of underwater belt. The armoured deck however, doesn't cover the underwater belt. On the armour model you can click the various thicknesses on the panel and see where they apply. The 25mm deck doesn't protect the sides enough. Very interesting info you can find there. -

Unintentional_submarine replied to Mister_Greek's topic in General Discussion
Haha, that's pretty epic. The Myogi and the Wyoming appears to have a really wonky citadel hitbox. I mean in my case, my HE shell hit somewhere with around 21mm armour or less, covering the citadel. That can't be right. Besides HE shells don't really travel through the ship. So the citadel was right up against said armour. havaduck, on 07 August 2015 - 12:50 PM, said: Nope, just WG @ work. In fact you couldn't have done this with AP (at that distance and angle). Gremlin got powerfull 130 mm guns, which when firing HE can pen 21,6 mm of armor. Now HE can't bounce and armor doesnt get enhanced thicknes because of angling. Finally Myogi got 19-25 mm deck armor and 19-203 mm for the citadel (and I bet the 19 mm here is the armored deck above the citadell) So .... not surprised at all. If you go to the gamemodels3d site, you will see that the Myogi has 19mm underwater protection, and the forward and rear decks that doesn't cover the citadel. Obviously it was a hit to that underwater belt, which by itself it pretty odd. The armoured deck covering the citadel from above is 25mm and is rather deep in the ship, no chance my HE could reach it. -
Opinion regarding the released German cruiser line
Unintentional_submarine replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
Friedrich der Grosse has also been mentioned many times. And there has been persistent rumours that the SS lobbied for Der Führer (probably until the change from Deutschland to Lützow, another old name), though that one should be ignored in any case for the game. But Hindenburg makes sense as it was used for a battlecruiser in WWI, and those the Germans called Grosse Kreutzer and lumped with cruisers rather than battleships. Thus a continuation of the name for a cruiser is good. That doesn't mean it couldn't be used for a battleship, as Scharnhorst and Gneisenau shows. But it just means it is an excellent top tier name, be it cruiser or battleship, and my personal preference is cruiser over battleship (as I really think that Friedrich der Grosse is the best since he is pretty much the greatest German military hero/king, soaked in much more myth and legend than Hindenburg). I'm not dead set on getting these specific names, just that I think the continuation of the German names is preferable. But names we have correspondence for are of course best (and I should think we will see some of them). -

Opinion regarding the released German cruiser line
Unintentional_submarine replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
Why? Germany had a tradition of repeating the names of the past. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau comes to mind, but also Königsberg and Leipzig (and I'm pretty sure more of the cruisers are reused names). Yorck, Roon and Hindenburg are all very logical names. Hindenburg in particular for the TX. I would be annoyed if they didn't do this. -
Minekaze needs to go from tier V
Unintentional_submarine replied to Rem3mberMe's topic in Destroyers
The Minekaze is very much excellent at sealclubbing. But once you face people that aren't sailing in straight lines or who are sneaky in turning corners, it's true nature comes out. Yes, persistent attacks will result in hits, but every attack is highly risky. To say nothing of situations where USN DDs still prowl. The Minekaze is not bad at all, but she is far from as OP as she is often claimed to be. And the statistics back that up. I could post up multiple battles in my Kongo to claim it is OP. But it isn't really, I'm just good with it. Being good with something should provide results (though some ships are just really bad). And no, people aren't equally good with everything. -
Is the map border full speed turning supposed to be part of the game?
Unintentional_submarine replied to goodman528's topic in General Discussion
I read on the NA forums, that the RU forums say (omg, my buddy's cousin's neighbour's cat's rival's owner's boss says) that the incoming fix is one that stops ships dead when they hit the border. Too bad I didn't see if this meant the border will be an island come 0.4.1, or if it be like now, only the ship doesn't move until it's movement vector carries it away from the border. Preferably it is the latter as an island-border is going to be pretty crappy on some maps (Big Race in particular). While the stop-and-go border will still allow people to hit it and not get utterly devastated for the next minute, while still removing the benefit of the present sliding (as you simply can't miss a target sitting still). -
Opinion regarding the released German cruiser line
Unintentional_submarine replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
But would you be able to do this reliably against yourself in the Cleveland? Killing people that are less skilled then yourself doesn't really say that much about the ships involved.
