That happens only when enemy lemming trains and carrier doesn't follow near team. Otherwise there should be some cruiser/gunboat reasonably close unless team has already taken lots of losses. With destroyer spotted sinking part can be done without need to slow part of DD hunting to get inside detection radius of it. Like this: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/uwqd03b3j2ofsr6/AACziIPOFnBbO2Ye6M7dlVrGa?dl=0 Kinda wonder if that's the longest distance destroyer gun hit to Minekaze...

That's still lot of time to count on team being competent enough to handle one ship disadvantage elsewhere... In important areas of spotting enemies/enemy DDs and torps and harassing enemy's attack. And lots of time for competent enemy to seriously damage your team. While if enemy can't use that advantage chances already favor your team especially if that carrier player is dumb enough to get nuked "pants down"... In which case he likely wouldn't have been that good at carrying team anyway if left to survive. USN carriers are in notable disadvantage. If it had been IJN carrier skilled player would have with good chance cross torped you to bottom before you got close.

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
EsaTuunanen replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
I think 14 torpedo hits out 42 launched should qualify as achievement for those lovely "fast" one minute travel time torps of Gremyashchy. -
Or maybe the problem is countries where is everything is dubbed, translated etc... Practise is simply the best teacher. And if environment doesn't encourage learning there obviously won't be much of learning. Of anything... Even the simplest things like logical thinking. Actually there's zero empty chambers when it's match maker screwing you days. With almost every match being fighting against something like 15-18 because of some "team mates" practically playing for enemy. For something like week had lots of horrible teams no matter the clock time. Today has been the first time for long time feeling that match maker hasn't been deliberately sabotaging me by giving POS teams.

Urgent need to Save WOWS by rewarding players for cooperation!
EsaTuunanen replied to anonym_ZxkC3EBNBO8l's topic in General Discussion
It feels more like naval version of WW1 trench warfare. Both side ships taking positions behind islands and if you also try to cap and spot enemy DDs/torps destroyer has very little good torpedo launch chances. Because if you move to open trying to get better launch angle and detection risk materializes most of the enemy team is going to focus on you. And if there are carriers and planes destroyer has even less fun time. Well... at least carriers must enjoy it because they know from where to look for destroyers. -
Weird, just had 14 torpedo hit match with those one minute travel time torps of Gremlin... Out of 42 torps launched. Meaning every third torpedo hit! "Winners" of metal fish lottery were König (2), Gneisenau (5), Scharnhorst (3), Dunkerque (2), Kiev (1) and Nürnberg. (1) Actually haven't seen Potential damage there since some time last week.

Would that be per some amount of avoided shells or damage? Week or two ago had 1,92M hp potential damage worth of ordnance shot at my destroyer.

Also might consider Seasonic Prime PSU now that there's some actual advance in efficiency to current.

That works better if you can actually trust teammates to have ability to think, do damage and push to win... Just like USN AS carriers depend on their team to actually win that "surface war". But most of the time it just means that destroyer's chances to harass enemy are heavily limited while watching incompetent team mates to run through that smoke.

A question of morality. Was I right or wrong? What would you have done?
EsaTuunanen replied to Tigdam's topic in Archive
There's difference between average idiot and those full of sh*t and in need of getting it beaten out of them. Like used to be done in "less civilized" times when people were actually demanded to have manners as part of education/upbringing. -
While you don't of course need to prove not having your own bias. I've had dive bombers missing me with bombs doing silhouette more than couple times while going literally in straight line. (otherwise occupied to notice approaching bombers or forced to straight line by some torps) But lot more often maneuvering and turning crosswise to direction of bombers doesn't prevent taking hit. From experience I consider it at best as about 50% chance to avoid hit. Once in a while avoiding two bomb drops during match, sometimes taking hit from every drop despite of constant maneuvering before drop. Automatic torp drops from bad carrier players sure aren't much of threat, with even more agile cruisers having chances to avoid cross torping. But manual cross torping from skilled carrier player requires some harder work and timing even in destroyer . There's simply huge difference depending on skill of carrier player.

Fears about the IJN destroyer line rework
EsaTuunanen replied to Kanmen's topic in General Discussion
Would be rather heavy nerf for them to lose that much both torpedo speed and damage. I guess nothing should be able to hurt those German BBs... -
And with only probable reward for that team service being either shell hits or hit from laser guided bomb unless RNGesus likes your destroyer. While dive bombers can have problems in getting even single hit to BB larger than aiming/hit circle most of the time they can score hit destroyer with width just one fourth of BB. And IJN carriers of course have access to harder to avoid cross torping if you don't have defensive AA fire.

How do we train Battleship captains better?
EsaTuunanen replied to T3ddyBear's topic in General Discussion
There really isn't need for much communication if players know how game and different ships work. And game already includes basic things like highlighting particular enemy etc. Problem is all those clueless people who fail their way up from tier 1. Nope, still won't get those Balless Boats moving from edges. I think only way for that would be having submarines in game... As "border patrol" which nukes BBs who who spend too much of early match at map border with those BBs then getting special Executed for Cowardice marking into team score. That getting sent back to square one (or last save) is what some single player games have done if player insists trying to get off the playing area. -

EsaTuunanen replied to T3ddyBear's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, lone destroyer doesn't really have much options against propely attacking enemies. It's hard to try to keep in optimal torpedo launch position because of risking getting spotted by plane or destroyer and needing to be constantly running. With torps having longish reload time making every evaded salvo hurt. And if you want to use guns which are slow damage doing method you need to keep at safe distance to avoid getting smashed fast. When you finally have torps reloaded you again need to spend time in getting to launch position and it takes even longer to get back to safe gunning position. In worst case you don't get really any meaningfull damage done because of all torps missing and not having much of gunning time. And if choosing constant gunning you still depend on RNG luck to get fires. -

EsaTuunanen replied to T3ddyBear's topic in General Discussion
Hardly any destroyer can fire enough torps at time to get more than occasional random/accidental hit to preventively maneuvering target. Also catapult planes of BBs and cruisers can give good early torpedo warning when used properly. (not wasting it the second the match starts) And the more tightly team camps the more freely torpedo boats can move around and look for good torpedo launch angles. (+have more possible targets to hit with single torpedo salvo) Making it harder for them to start moving later. -
Wreck of German ww1 submarine SM UC-30 discovered:
EsaTuunanen replied to ralach's topic in Off-Topic
Most likely Germany would be officially involved just in recovering remains of crew members. I don't think there's been any salvage of that size old submarines. In case of Kursk damaged bow with torpedo room was cut off and left to bottom and explosives in Kursk didn't have significant time to deteriorate. -
Fires are unreliable when you need damage done now. For Tier 4 and 5 it's USN BBs which take most damage from small caliber HEs. You need bad luck with dispersion to not do some direct damage with almost every salvo to Wyoming. (unless you're aiming at belt armor) New York isn't much more DD caliber HE proof either. Both Kaiser and König have clearly less area vulnerable to direct damage from DD caliber HE. So if fire RNGesus doesn't smile you're not going to do much damage. And if RNG smiles every BB burns as well. So that same thing which makes German BBs take more normal pen damage from big gun APs also makes them more proof against smaller caliber guns.

I guess answer of Danish government to that would be "You're free to come to lift it up if you want" Because that sure won't be easy with all those explosives. While age might make some of that stuff inert it can also make some of them so sensitive that they explode if someone just stamps ground too hard. This mini submarine had only two torps and externally mounted: -
High dmg recieving and very low dmg output Fubuki
EsaTuunanen replied to DinkyToy_AW's topic in Destroyers
Meaning you're spotted for other enemies and you can be assured that also enemies outside your field of view want piece of you. BBs can easily hit you from 10+km range if they have guns loaded and to right direction. If you're bow in/out BB APs do normal penetrations and just two shells can do lots of damage. In fact more than HE hits. You can check after the match what ships hit you by moving mouse over that "Artillery" line in Damage received part. In this one I was hit by that Marblehead: -
What are the f....... russiand DDs good for?
EsaTuunanen replied to barbaroja_Ar's topic in Destroyers
You should spam AP against broadsides. BBs with 25mm plating are proof against direct damage from HE up to 152mm and hitting superstructure of some New Mexico/Colorado is unreliable especially when AA guns in it eat half the hits. So when seeing its broadside from range where you can easily lead reliably (instead of just hoping to hit ship) spam AP into upper decks. Especially if BB thinks it good idea to sit stationary angled against your team's BBs feel free to encourage him to start moving... 25mm plating is thin enought that you can penetrate it even from clear angle from 10+km. -
Would be indeed nice if we had full precise explanation from WG to how they work. Already is that crosshair based to fixed pixel size bitmap image or vector graphics scaling according to resolution makes difference.

Did you already buy any lottery tickets? With that super luck you should.

British ship detonations in Jutland didn't happen because of running out of luck and getting hit into magazine. They happened because of systematic failures in safety: There was powder stored/lying around at various levels of turrets with some even outside protective containers and many safety hatches/blast doors were open between gunhouse and magazine. So there was basically ready explosive train inside turret waiting for ignition source. Without that those hits would have just disabled that particular turret. Except for some really heavy hit from torps (or AP bomb like in case of Arizona) or that rare lucky hit detonations mostly happened in badly damaged and basically already sinking ships. Not in good shape ones. And that includes destroyers. Correct, because of inability to actually hit precise spot detonations should depend on random luck in getting that good dispersion RNG and then RNG saying yes for detonation. Least of all players can aim to precise spots in destroyers. So why detonations don't happen randomly at least in them? They happen literally like with some big bonus for detonation chance when high hp ship is hit.

Fears about the IJN destroyer line rework
EsaTuunanen replied to Kanmen's topic in General Discussion
Nothing like making New Mexico to start angling against destroyer guns. Couple days ago got 2½k damage salvo from range around 12 km when one NM thought it good idea to stop. He started moving again after next two salvos and noticing that he was going to get taste of his own "medicine". Should actually test in Training Room up to what distance 130mm AP works against broadside NM and Colorado. HE just doesn't do much any damage to them with superstructure running out of its hp fast with not good chances for fire. New York is reliable to put on fire with dozen or so hits but number of fires seems to drop pretty sharply when getting to New Mexico with its 25mm plating.
