There were some interesting design studies conducted prior to the great war for a class of Dreadnoughts, consisting of 9-12 ships, for the defence of the Dutch East Indies.

Before the outbreak of WW2, the Dutch minister of defence ordered the navy to conduct studies for a class of 3 battlecruisers, design 1047. These would be tasked to defend and repel a potential Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies. The design of the 1047s was based on the German Scharnhorst class.
