    Made a follow up test on how AP bombs perform when you specifically target different sections of a ship to avoid damage saturation. Tl;dr: Initial alpha strike is higher, but not by much. Still recommend using HE bombs for Essex/Midway.

    Follow up test: AP bombs and damage saturation For this I specifically targeted different areas of a ship (in this case, a GK) to see if this method will yield more damage. First target, first strike Bow section - 27k damage Aft section - 20k damage Superstructure - 19k damage First target, second strike Bow section - 6k damage Aft section - 13k damage + disabled turret Superstructure - 14k damage Second target, first strike Bow section - 25k damage Aft section - 25k damage Superstructure - 16k damage Second target, second strike Bow section - 15k damage Aft section - 13k damage Superstructure - 10k damage - sunk with 10 hits Conclusion This proves two things: 1. The higher damage yield from HE bombs comes from their larger drop circle, making them less affected by damage saturation as they hit more of the ship. Given enough strikes they should suffer from damage saturation just like AP bombs, but the amount of strikes required is more than two, thus thoroughly unrealistic to achieve as shown by the initial test. 2. You can emulate this behavior with AP bombs by specifically targeting the different sections of a ship if you cannot land citadel hits on it, which will result in higher initial alpha strike. The difference in damage however isn't high enough to justify using AP bombs over HE ones, as the ability to specifically target sections of a ship rapidly diminishes with the size of a ship (obviously) along with being potentially impractical in actual combat. HE bombs also still have the advantage in utility, being able to break more AA, set fires and doing good damage to DDs.

    Whoops, totally forgot Hindenburg in my opening post. She's interestingly the only cruiser fairly resistant to AP bombs (aka you deal around 15k damage with them to her lol).

    Nah, average damage values represent both squads striking the same target. Well, from the couple of targets I could drop more than once I noticed no difference in the damage totals. On the other hand AP bomb behavior was consistent in that the initial strike would always do more damage than any follow up. Only real explanation I have for this would be damage saturation. My theory is that due to the larger drop circle HE bombs spread out more, thus are unlikely to completely saturate an entire area, requiring more strikes to do so than AP bombs. You could perhaps try to emulate that with AP bombs by targeting different sections of the hull every time you drop the same target and thus get more alpha strike out of your sorties, but question is do you really have time to do so in the heat of battle?

    Which just unnecessarily waters down the skill floor even further while completely [edited] on good positional play for both herself and her target. And that's in the line with currently the lowest skill floor. Not to mention it primarily [edited] cruisers and DDs.

    Yeah, I can imagine HE bombs are better for high tier as they deal roughly the same damage AND set things on fire + break stuff. For Lex however AP bombs is perfectly viable as she has plenty of BBs vulnerable to AP bomb one-shots in her MM spread.

    They should get rid of either the 1/4 HE penetration rule or the triple turrets. Remove short fuse AP to compensate. After the heal cd nerf she's not nearly as powerful as most people make her out to be, but she could use some tweaks.

    Tech tree AP bombs have a much smaller manual drop circle than Enterprise ones. You can fairly reliably slap around DDs for 1-5k damage with it, which is about the same as you'd get with IJN DBs. As the guys said before me, they can technically speaking hit everything, but I found they have the most one-shot potential against: - Gneisenau/Scharnhorst - Bismarck/Tirpitz - Fuso - Nagato - Queen Elizabeth (and in extension probably Warspite as well, though I haven't been able to test that yet) They're also good against most high tier cruisers (though you usually never want to attack them), such as: - T9+ IJN cruisers - T8+ French cruisers - T9+ USN cruisers - Moskva German ones are interestingly fairly resistant.

    I'm enjoying myself very much with Lexington tbh. The 1/1/2 setup is perfectly serviceable, providing good alpha strike without giving up air control entirely. I really like the smaller tech tree AP bomb manual drop circle. Can we get that on Big E, too? I'd even accept getting the enlarged circle when disrupted for it. :) There are only two things I would improve: - Service times are still far too long, I suggest cutting them down by an overall value of at least 5 seconds, if not more. You already have to play with fewer squads for larger squadrons, getting another handicap on top of it is a bit too much. - Fighter reserves on the Lexington are a bit too low. I'd gladly trade ~4 reserve DBs for additional fighters. Or instead maybe you could even increase the amount of total reserves to ~80 to preserve national flavor (USN CVs usually have more reserves than IJN ones) and allocate most of that to fighters. It doesn't particularly make sense that Ranger has higher reserves than Lexington anyway, even if it's only by 1 plane. - The damage AP bombs deal against high tier BBs is woefully inadequate and inferior compared to what HE bombs are capable of. We were promised stronger AP bombs for higher tiers. Where are they? As it stands right now AP bombs at higher tiers are an anti-cruiser weapon more than anything else.     Holy RNGesus, I think the manual drop circle for AP bombs is even smaller than on tech tree USN CVs. I demand a buff to Big E now! EDIT: Yep, definitely smaller. Can even reliably hit DDs with them and cause reasonable damage (~3-5k). Fighter reserves are a bit too low for my tastes, tho. Then again maybe E has spoiled me too much.

    Actually radar does in fact increase it to whatever your radar range is, BUT just for you. Your teammates can only see them on the minimap. With surface spotting range I ofc mean the acquisition range. Sorry for the confusion.

    It's 1/1/2 actually. Things were always skewed towards Saipan as she is the single most overpowered CV tier for tier. I'll just use free exp to skip Ranger once the update hits.

    Which is your opinion and the level of seriousness with which you approach games that ofc you are entitled to have. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. However you may have fun getting absolutely crushed in, for example, Mario Kart, but the vast majority of players simply wouldn't. (Though that also depends on external factors like whether or not you're playing with friends on a couch or playing alone online against strangers. Naturally playing with friends usually is always fun regardless of how hard they're kicking your behind.) I would be very careful what you wish for. A game that is "all fun" results in incredibly ridiculous gameplay. A rather extreme example would be that if losing planes was fun then CVs would do nothing all game but constantly fly their planes into the nearest high concentration of AA. Both sides would have fun at least for a short while, but it would get boring incredibly quickly and the gameplay concept is utterly ruined. Thus from a pure game design standpoint making a game that is "all fun" is either a bad idea or simply impossible. Game mechanics draw a strict line to what is fun and what isn't to teach you what you should and shouldn't do (e.g. fall down a gap in Mario and you lose a life which isn't fun, therefore you should not fall down gaps), a principle that must apply to all games that are meant to entertain you for longer than a couple of minutes. As a result complaining about the actual topic at hand (fighters can shoot down your bombers and thus make the game less fun for you) is meaningless to the extreme. (Though to be fair while WoWs does a very good job of telling you what you shouldn't do, the game fails completely at telling you what you actually SHOULD do instead.)
