Superships to Appear Permanently in the National Tech Trees
Verblonde replied to farko1's topic in General Discussion
Based on my experience, even a mediocre player (me) can tear most superships a new posterior, by means of DDs and a rudimentary understanding of the vision mechanics. I vaguely wonder if this is the driver behind the proposed new CV spotting mechanics - they would make this an awful lot harder. The situation may be different if someone good gets their hands on a supership, of course. -
Cheers - might be worth revisiting then?

Superships to Appear Permanently in the National Tech Trees

I rather enjoyed the superships in Ranked too: in general, the people driving them had no idea what they were doing, and as such represented enormous xp pinatas. Really? What new mechanics? As far as I've experienced, it's just existing mechanics, slightly tweaked. Didn't make much difference to me playing against them, as far as I could tell. Of course, it could just be said inexperienced players who haven't worked out how to make optimum use of superships? -
<pauses to Google, with a sense of deep foreboding> Ah, I understand this Young Person's reference now...! Have they got this game working properly now then? Last I heard it was a bit of a car-crash? It was all looking very promising until the initial release...

Superships to Appear Permanently in the National Tech Trees

As a matter of interest, does "quite positive" mean really quite positive, or that the semi-usual 'torches and pitchforks' reaction to something controversial was somewhat absent this time? Whilst I don't follow every channel of discussion apropos WOWS religiously, what I've seen in response to superships is either hostile, or 'meh' (I tend towards the latter: I don't generally want them, due to their not being remotely historical, and being economically non-viable, but - super-CVs apart - they don't seem to be sky-falling bad for the game, in contrast to submarines, say). Just trying to understand the language being used, and what it actually means. -
There are quite a few of we old buggers around...!

Ah, what sir/madam requires is to step this way: https://eu.wargaming.net/shop/wows/gold/ https://eu.wargaming.net/shop/wows/premium/ https://armory.worldofwarships.eu/en/category/commanders I think what you mean to say is it's challenging for a completely new f2p player - that's accurate. Like I said though, I don't really object to this; it's just what we've seen before with the existing T10s. WG is a commercial entity; superships are obviously the latest money-earner - WG are not idiots (no, really!); they wouldn't put this much effort into something without the prospect of a decent return. -

I'm curious: why are people so vehemently opposed to superships? I'd rather they weren't in the game - I think - but they're (mostly) more of what we have already, and don't fundamentally change the nature of the game, as such. Admittedly, we haven't really seen what happens when decent players get hold of them yet (I strongly suspect that the bulk of people using them in testing weren't the old lags), but they don't seem to break anything...? -

Define 'easy'. It's just a grind; I can do it in less than a week, if I put my back into it, and I'm barely average (or maybe sub-average - I haven't looked recently). You can certainly do it without acquiring much in the way of playing skill. Basically, it's the same process currently used by the less capable to get any T10, with a bit more time tacked on at the end. 1 in 20, according to the published odds. Expensive, yes, but you 'only' need two (assuming your third is whatever T10 precedes the supership you're after); I'm sure there'll be plenty of hyperbole about the new superships and their desirability to motivate the whales. Not even remotely; this is basically the model that WOT uses, but moved up a couple of tiers: an average player will typically lose money on T9+ tanks; you fund them with mid tier battles. Doesn't seem to have the slightest impact on players using T10s that probably shouldn't (even I have several now...!). In essence, exactly the same thing is going to happen with superships as previously happened with T10s. I - perhaps surprisingly - don't have a problem with this; I feel it's probably unrealistic for a commercial entity such as WOWS to maintain a high-skill level in battle types that anyone can get into, so don't get excitable that anyone will be able to get hold of superships. My point was more that I find it curious that the Dev Blog is worded such that we are being assured that something that we can all see is clearly going to happen (low skill/new players in superships) isn't going to happen. Why not assume the customer base has a collective IQ slightly higher than yeast, and just be straightforward about this? Basically, two types of players will be able to bag superships easily: the reasonably experienced *and* inexperienced/new whales - thank you whales for helping keep the lights on! -

So, assuming there isn't some communication difficulty: Get the relevant silver T10. Throw money at Firepower containers (or similar) to get the remaining two T10s. Get your supership. Yup - so much more likely that experienced players will get the things... -

They also claim that historical accuracy is important. When I was growing up, I was taught that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. I didn't comment... -

This. Basically, we'll return to how it was when the first iterations of the reework came out i.e. anything balanced around stealth was largely worthless. That would be a shame: currently, most DDs are (plus-minus) viable; remove the viability of anything sneaky again, and you'll just have reduced variation in the game, which is generally bad (and what happened last time)... -
Most likely, he tore chunks out of the opposition DDs (probably higher tier ones too) before getting sunk; possibly got a few decent torps away too. I'm not seeing any significant planes in play, which is another potential 'odd' source of xp. As the posters before me point out, a) you don't get 1.8K base xp for nothing, and b) it might be a good idea to review how the economy works, particularly earnings. If your aim is maximising xp earned, you want to be doing large chunks of proportional damage (1,000 hp of damage to a DD will be rewarded significantly more than doing exactly the same damage to a BB, for example), and - ideally - doing it to things of higher tier.

I think I did - I ran the main update at lunchtime, and when I just checked a moment ago, there appeared to be a second much smaller one... Over to the IT grown-ups for an explanation?

You clearly don't play on the NA server very much? Double CV games at T8 are surprisingly common there; such games - needless to say - tend to have very limited options for sneaking around (for any class), which removes a layer of complexity from the game. Besides that, what @Panocek said. -

That's true, but with a few crucial differences that do make all the difference: For start, the fastest DD goes - I think - less than half the speed of the slowest plane; most of the time, the speed differential is 3 or 4 times. Following on from that, if the DD's opponents aren't idiots, it is very practical to go after the DD whether or not you can see him at that moment as the speed differential between DDs and other surface ships is usually not huge. Planes are de facto ammo; it doesn't really matter if they get damaged, whereas the DD not so much. Significant preponderance of hydro/radar. Ultimately, it's actually quite rare that a typical DD gets the opportunity to just tool around spotting the opposition with impunity; speaking for myself (although I'm not that good), it only really happens when the opposition team - collectively - messed up (at least at any tier from 8 and up)... -

Devblog: new plane spotting in testing
Verblonde replied to arttuperkunas's topic in General Discussion
Absolutely! I get all that, and also 'resemble that remark'; I just find it good for my sanity to recall that if WG *really* bollix things up, I can play other things... A decade or so ago, I used to work for a sports club in London; one of the things we were periodically reminded of was that whilst there wasn't a great deal of competition in terms of fans watching our specific sport, there was an enormous amount of competition for people's 'entertainment' spend in more general terms. So, our sports club was ultimately competing with all the exciting/decadent things you can do in the capital, not just those involving funny-shaped balls. I suppose it's quite likely that WG are very aware of this too; presumably, that's driving - in this case - giving the sneaky ships another kick: a random farty who WG have just drawn into the game is more likely to play BBs, and what's most likely to upset an incompetent BB driver? Yup... -

On the positive side, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is out soon - gods, I hope it doesn't suck... I do occasionally wonder why apparently WG think they have no competition, as they're the only arcadey warship game in town; there are all sorts of *other* genres people can play y'know... -

If I read that right, a competent CV will be able to perma-spot DDs easily (assuming the DD doesn't hide at the back), and there might be a little scope for sneaking around against a blithering idiot. I assume that all the BBs whining about 'invisible' DDs (rather than bothering to learn not to drive in a straight line all the time, because that's complicated) have reached a critical mass in WG's eyes... -
This is one of the few positives of the captain rework: with the class-specific skill-trees, you can run any old captain on your premium, regardless of where they're from, without necessarily having to run a sub-optimal build. For example, I looked earlier: I think the 'regular' berth of the captain I have on Dido is the Queen Elizabeth; I'd never given them cruiser skills, so they're now specialised for Dido (I have sensible' builds on all the silver cruisers, of course) in the cruiser skill tree.
-
If you can, I'd suggest doing so, but I'd also suggest not listening to my views on cruisers (except when I'm quoting someone else) too much - I really can't cruiser for toffee! (I got the thing about the AP angles, and resolved to pay a bit more attention to them, from LWM's review.) If you have the time to play the battles, 50 tokens shouldn't be too hard; in Randoms, you'll probably struggle not to get enough points for the first three or so tokens per class/nation combination. My approach was to hoover up all the 200 pointers in quick Coop games, and then switch to Randoms for the rest (although I think I accidentally got a couple of 600 pointers in Coop whilst knocking off other missions)... Update: apologies - my brains are in my bottom this morning (haven't had coffee yet) - you need 70 points to snag one of the ships. Sorry.

Don't worry - I vaguely recall it confused the hell out of me the first time I noticed it on mine... -
She's worth picking up for free, if you can be bothered ticking off the personal challenges (or whatever they're called): the AP only, with unique (at the moment) ricochet angles provides a slight point of difference/interest.
