Question: How often ships come back to sales. I want Asashio.
Verblonde replied to SR_FRIOL's topic in General Discussion
I don't usually factor in CVs (except as a threat), as I'm running torp acceleration, so it's fairly uncommon for a CV to get within range. That said, I've bagged the odd one when either I've got lucky, or the CV got silly... -
5.1 km?! Crikey - that's gonna distress a few IJN DD drivers...

FTFY (as I'm assured the Young People say)... Me too, by the way.

Radar - And no NOT another whine Topic
Verblonde replied to Soft_Kitty_Warm_Kitty's topic in General Discussion
I'm tending to view the current radar spike in much the same way as the OP i.e. as a learning opportunity. The key down-side (for me, anyway) is that a plethora of radar ships rather encourages passive play, which tends to be less fun - for me, anyway. -
It's still early days for me, but I like Haida a lot so far; I'm having to learn a new play style though (I'm rubbish with gunboats), which is going to take a while. She seems to reward being reasonably aggressive, which suits me - I really don't like a passive play style. I love having secondaries on a DD too, even if they are a) essentially useless, and b) a huge flashing "here I am" neon sign, when you forget to switch them off! I was surprised how effective sneaking along in the creeping smoke can be, provided you aren't facing radar, or a Loyang etc. Previously, I'd tended to use it to screen other people, or as a "run away" thing...

This, pretty much. At the moment, an Asashio driver needs to be very good at dealing with radar; I imagine this will lessen a bit once the US cruiser spike dies down a bit, although being able to get the (admittedly nerfed) radar mod via the arsenal just made life a bit harder for all sneaky ships generally. For an Asashio to be useful, you really need a minimum of maybe four-five BBs on the enemy team IMO; it also helps to have torpedo acceleration - as others have pointed out, lobbing torps at the enemy from 20 km away rarely works now that people are fully aware of the threat - the extra speed/reduced reaction time is very helpful, assuming you can get close enough (which shouldn't be *that* hard unless the enemy team is positively bulging with radars). -

I hadn't heard of her (I'm pretty rubbish at IJN ships) - she looks like an excellent candidate. Only IJN DD (edit - of her class) to survive the war, according to Wikipedia... -

I have Asashio too; as others have said, it's wildly situational. I've also had people express surprise when I try and cap in mine - I hate to think what the majority of users are doing with theirs. With the new modules for T10 thing going on, lots of people seem to be playing T10s at the moment, so it's currently suffering a bit with MM, especially in conjunction with the new US cruisers spike. There does need to be a sensible IJN T8 premium DD though... -
Thank you!

Excellent form - well done, that chap! :) -

@Admiral_H_Nelson - was that you earlier, whilst I was giving my shiny new Haida a run-out? -
Bought her immediately - it's the Haida, after all! (the real one is parked half an hour down the road, so rude not to)
-
I was under the impression that we only got CLs that we'd previously unlocked and bought via the old cruiser line? So, I have Cleveland sitting in my port at T8, as I had its T6 incarnation; I also got the T6 CA at the same time...

Am I correct that BBs' secondaries don't cause a 'visible from space' bloom, when they're fired from inside/other side of smoke? Not really relevant for most, but perhaps useful to know for KM, and perhaps MA?

BTW the Haida review from LWM went up yesterday, so she *must* be imminent: https://forum.worldofwarships.com/topic/163114-premium-ship-review-105-hmcs-haida/ Pretty please... -

+1 to the "Where the bloody hell is Haida?!" sentiment. I detect a slight quiver in the vicinity of my lower lip... -

I'd still miss - last night, I failed to hit a stationary (AFK) BB from less than 10 km away with my first set of Yugumo torps! Admittedly, it was bow-on, and sets 2-4 (TRB mounted) blew him out of the water, but still... -
From memory, at least part of it was the power plant - first turbine in a big warship and all that; I think that was what was really significant, but 'it goes fast' isn't much of a story on its own...?

Nah, embarrassingly, NCIS is the answer to this one - that's where I first heard the expression. I just Googled to make sure I wasn't remembering wrongly...!

T5 would be glorious, but I can't imagine they'll do it - T8 helps sell expensive premiums (Loyang etc.), and T10 encourages people to spend money free xping one or more suitable ships...

Apologies if this has been suggested before (I haven't read the entire thread): if radar is a significant issue (I'm not good/experienced enough to have a fully informed opinion yet), we might be able to lift something from RL to balance it. Specifically, in real life ships (and aircraft too, come to that) sometimes run 'dark' with their radar shut down, for the simple reason that you can detect a radar from much further away than it can be used to detect a target; the moment you fire up any sort of active search device like radar, you are effectively broadcasting 'here I am' out to a significant distance. It ought to be fairly straightforward to tweak the game such that the moment you fire up a radar, the distance you can be detected from increases, or perhaps the enemy just get a bearing to where you are. Degree, and which option, being determined by game balance factors. Not saying this is necessary, but it might be a (fairly) simple way to do it?

Thanks! :)

What should I spend my real money on?
Verblonde replied to Ive_got_the_ships's topic in Newcomers' Section
I would suggest playing as many different nations/classes as possible, and (most importantly) not rushing up the tiers. By doing that, you'll discover the types of things that you enjoy most; you'll also be a lot more skilled by the time you start getting exposed to higher tiers. Also, a lot of the fun historical ships are low to mid tiers (that does mean that low-mid tiers are not free from very good players, as a lot of them enjoy mucking about in historical ships)... -
As a matter of interest, if the nerf has made the upgrade no longer viable on Russian ships, which ships do people feel it *is* still viable on? Wondering what to spend my coal on, now that the arsenal is live...
