Can anyone explain the latest LWM/Huron drama?
Verblonde replied to black_falcon120's topic in General Discussion
A question for the experienced players: I tend to play a lot of different ships a few times, rather than a few ships lots of times. How noticeable is the difference in gun arc that is being talked about here, between Haida, say, and Huron? Also, is there a stat, or combination of stats that one can easily relate to arc? For example, I know that US cruisers - say - generally produce rainbows, but how would I know that without having played almost all of them? Yeah, I know - after how many thousand games, and I don't know this stuff...!? -
Can anyone explain the latest LWM/Huron drama?

The detail may be, but the fundamental principle is similar i.e. I don't have access to enough information about a ship still in testing to be able to make informed comment. -
Can anyone explain the latest LWM/Huron drama?

Hopefully, I learned my lesson from the San Diego discussion - I'll be giving much of this latest row a very wide berth until I've actually got my hands on the released Huron...! -
What is the proposed solution to the overall problem with submarines?
Verblonde replied to Corpsetaker's topic in General Discussion
This. Thing is, a lot of my spending decisions would have been rather different over the last year or so if WG had been honest (i.e. we're getting submarines, like it or not, and regardless of how shite they are for the game); if that were a trend across the wider player base, you can see why WG avoided honesty in this case. If that were truly the case, then I'm a unicum. (Narrator: alas, he was most certainly not a unicum.) -
What is the proposed solution to the overall problem with submarines?
Verblonde replied to Corpsetaker's topic in General Discussion
As far as I can tell, WG are too dumb to know when to cut their losses (that time was several months ago when it was clear that submarines couldn't be implemented in a way that improves the game); so, my solution to the problem is not play any mode with submarines in it, and spend more time playing other things... -
Flag-o-Rama 2022 event participate or not?
Verblonde replied to VedranSeaWolf359's topic in General Discussion
Something to bear in mind for the whales (who may have all the crate drop options): I believe ship crates like these drop silver, rather than doubloons, if you have all the drop options in port already. I certainly do for the T5s, and I think I do for the T8s... -
first greek ship First ever greek ship...and it's not the Averoff
Verblonde replied to Jethro_Grey's topic in General Discussion
I've been quietly hoping we'd see Velos in the game at some point; as hilarious as it is watching the nationalists' heads explode every time new non-Greek ships get announced, having at least one representative of the Greek navy in game is rather overdue. With Velos we get a real ship, with an interesting history, and at a useful tier (at least at the moment) - that sounds like a result to me! Shame it's being launched into the game with bloody submarines infesting the place - I would have probably grabbed her like a shot otherwise. -
a feature that we all need it
Verblonde replied to CV_SUB_Report_Blacklist's topic in General Discussion
I certainly wouldn't object! You can do it with DefAA (deactivate AA); adding the ability to the others would certainly be nice... -
Dev Blog (PR Dockyard, and other things): https://blog.worldofwarships.com/blog/340 Edit: there are also some submarine tweaks (and entirely excessive use of the word 'comfortable' and variations thereon).

BTW I tend to find the default key binding isn't terribly ideal; I had a spare mouse button free, so I bound it to that - makes it easier to trigger it at a suitable moment, whilst doing other things (like Just Dodge™ing) at the same time. Incidentally, it can be counter-productive to trigger sector reinforcement if you are being attacked directly perpendicular to your ship's long axis: although you're strengthening the AA on one side, you're weakening it proportionally on the other. If you're in something that can turn very hard, such that the reinforced side is kept towards the planes, that improves the effectiveness. Sector reinforcement tends to be most useful when planes are attacking someone else: it's often easier then to keep said planes on your reinforced side. Of course, this is all a bit of a placebo (as others have mentioned); a competent CV will still strike you regardless. It's still worth shooting up planes though (even fighters), if only for the rewards.

I really like the italian DD short range guns because of this amazing feature
Verblonde replied to Z0r0aster's topic in General Discussion
Kind of, obliquely: I think I'm running Sansonetti on the T10, with his range-boosting talent... -
Be aware that - if you don't buy permaflage - T9 and T10 tend to be credit sinks for many players, assuming you're playing silver ships. The economy is also about to change, although I'll be surprised if that aspect of high tiers is changed (if anything, they may get worse long-term). The most effective silver grinders are T9 premiums (plus the Kobayshi T8s, although they're not long for this world), assuming you can do reasonable amounts of damage in them. Naturally, I'm mainly thinking in terms of the ones you can get for free in-game resources.
-
Aye, when one gets a lot of premiums, they include a port slot (not always, of course - hence the Armory [sic] price difference); it's always amused me - very slightly - that WG usually list this as a majestic part of the premium ship package...!
-
OP: this is spectacularly bad advice. Do not follow it. All you get when you sell a premium (of any tier) is a bunch of silver that you could get easily just by playing whichever premium you sold, and a port slot (which are hardly difficult to acquire - just do the simple missions each month). Besides which, as pointed out earlier, you could quite easily get the thing back in an Xmas box or similar...
-
See my previous answer, but you don't really need to keep anything from T4 down, except possibly for occasional seal-clubbing (Clemson, for example). The only T4 and lower ships I keep hold of are premiums (*never* sell a premium, no matter how rubbish it is) and/or of historical significance.
-
Unless you're f2p and horribly short of silver (and perhaps not even then), you can make a case for not selling anything from T5 onwards: Every time you sell a ship (and its upgrades) if you don't want to pay to dismount, you lose half the silver value - that's a lot, especially at higher tiers. Each T5+ ship qualifies for snowflakes (and equivalent events) several times a year. T6-7 (and maybe T8 soon) can be used in Ops, which can be worthwhile (and you want multiple options to avoid paying the 'cooldown' fee). Clans and Ranked (and brawls) are quite frequently not top tier; again, you want options when that happens. The usual reason for selling things is to move up the tiers faster; take advantage of having to play more to earn the silver to buy the next silver ship (and equip it) - your skill-set will improve, which'll boost your future results (and so earnings). Personally, I never sell anything T5 and above, but it does mean I have a ludicrous number of ships in port (thank gods for filters). If you want a compromise: settle on several 'keepers' for each class and nation, and focus on them. T6-7 are especially important for Ops, but other than that, pick things you enjoy playing (I've still got Seattle, for instance, although she only gets used for snowflakes, and very occasional 'dakka'/'fires' missions in Coop - because I hate that ship with the fire of a thousand suns).

What we know about the next ranked season?
Verblonde replied to Andrewbassg's topic in General Discussion
Presumably, WG are trying to work out if they can get away with adding submarines or not... (If they do, it'll be another mode I'm avoiding.) -
This was the conclusion I'd come to, after fiddling around for a bit myself. I find these pop-ups intensely irritating (Epic do it as well), and wish WG would knock it off. It's a pity you can't transfer a regular account to Steam; if that were possible, I'd do it like a shot (Steam's pop-up cr4p is manageable)...

Submarines impact on your number of games
Verblonde replied to deathsadow's topic in General Discussion
I've done this a few times recently too... -
For any newcomers in the vicinity: although you can't buy extra stock of upgrades, you can load up any rental ships you may have in port with useful-for-the-future discounted upgrades; they will then be dismounted for free when the rental ends.

Rather lackluster USA July 4th events

In case anyone missed it, there is a 'click to participate' mission, if you want the Statue of Liberty captain (plus a couple of resources containers and cammos): https://worldofwarships.eu/en/news/sales-and-events/san-diego-in-the-armory-0115/ -
"Dead" Skills - Which are the ones you would never take?
Verblonde replied to Aragathor's topic in General Discussion
This is me in most respects, at least for captains I'll be using for PvP. I do have some of the silly conditional skills in place on some 'mainly PvE' captains though; for example, Close Quarters Combat can be worthwhile on some secondary monster BBs, if you're facing bots or - sometimes - in Ops. I wouldn't pick it against real people though, unless engaging in some Olympic-standard silly buggers... -
As of a few minutes ago: I only have Yamagiri so far; running premium, she's straightforward to break even with - just make sure you're running a credit-boosting cammo (for the love of the gods, no-one should buy perma-flage for T11s), and the standard credit-boosting signal. I have some Meritorious Service cammo left, plus a few dragon flags; with those, I usually make a decent profit (although it's a bit of a waste of dragon flags). As others have said already though, T11 is *meant* to be a credit sink (and encouragement to spend money): f2p folk will almost certainly need to play some lower tier games to fund their T11s, and the lazy will just open their wallets. Of course, if you want to be sneaky, there's always the option of better target selection: blasting DDs - say - will reward you far better than shooting fatties.

Dunkirk and Cunningham Enhanced skills after rework
Verblonde replied to Ashleyphotog's topic in General Discussion
Be careful what you wish for: the last time, we got two extra points, a ludicrous increase in the xp needed to get them, and very little improvement on what we had before (and in some areas, the exact opposite e.g. super cruisers that worked better with a BB build).- 18 replies

"Dead" Skills - Which are the ones you would never take?
Verblonde replied to Aragathor's topic in General Discussion
Predictably, my view is rather DD-centric. It's not so much skills that I would never take because they suck (although there are one or two), but rather that there are skills that I might take if the points available were unlimited (*and* before WG get any more funny ideas, the xp levels to get them weren't entirely ridiculous), but as they aren't they don't have a chance. Besides that: I generally avoid AA and ASW skills, unless they give a compelling surface-to-surface boost; AA and ASW are largely worthless on a DD, so why waste points making them just slightly less worthless? The first ten points will almost certainly be the 'standard' ones for a DD, so we have a maximum of eleven left to pick from; whatever skills we pick probably want to be useful every battle, and - ideally - not be situational. If we look at a typical captain: This is one of my Suzuki brothers, built for IJN torp boats (probably obviously); you can argue about a few things (some will ditch PT and a torp skill, to take RL perhaps), but for an optimal build, most people won't deviate too far from this. You get something vaguely similar for more dakka-orientated DDs, but picking more in the way of gun skills (personally, I don't go in for lighthouse builds, but that's me). The closest I get to 'never pick' skills (thinking about all DDs, across all nations) are swift in silence, whatever AFT is called now (I use stealth too much, even on 'dakka' DDs), dazzle, the swift ammo change one, and IFHE (even on the IJN dakka line)...
