I prefer the old methodology too, apart from the aspect that @Klopirat mentions - being able to snag the freebies without logging into the game. -

It's also a minor consideration that I don't want to spend eternity in the afterlife with demons poking me in the happy sacks with their pitchforks (which is what'll happen if I pick the CV instead)...! -

For what it's worth, I believe the majority of my Dreadnoughts have been won in DDs, many of them the Ikea line; the trick is to get practiced in managing your heals and when/if/how you take damage (as much as possible).

Personally, I would much rather that WG stopped messing about with loot boxes, and just did proper sales (as in, targeted price reductions) where we can pick which ships we want, assuming the reduced price is to our liking. I mean, I've done well from loot boxes myself, and I don't mind having a ridiculous ship collection (yay, snowflakes, if nothing else, not to mention making Ops more worthwhile for a couple of tiers), but it's more a principle thing... (But I'm clearly not principled *enough* to stop buying the things, as long as they work out in my favour.)

We don't *know*, but - I think - the data that Black Falcon collected suggests that the chance is roughly double for a mega, compared to the medium ones. FWIW my personal data-set (much smaller) is more or less in line with this...

As far as I know - for the purposes of the discerning whale - the mechanism is the same in all important respects: You roll a ship, and the system probably assigns you something pants. The system checks, and if you already have that ship, you get a SC with another ship; this new ship will probably be one of the weaker things from the list that you don't have. Eventually, the system runs out of dross, and assigns you something you actually want. Basically, one has to work out which ships you'll get before the ones you actually want, and a likely return on spend - is it worth it? I - very roughly - got something like 150 UKP value from about 100 UKP spend, excluding things like Poltava/Cali (and flags/cammo) from the 'value' column; even if I just factor in the two T9s (both of which I did want, especially Neustrashimy), I'm still slightly ahead, but - for the avoidance of doubt - I'm an epic whale, so there was zero chance of getting any real dross. It's also worth emphasising that you have to know when to stop too: unlike the WOT gamble boxes, you don't get duplicate ships, so no scope for clocking up lots of doubloons. Once there are no more ships to get, the value proposition absolutely craters (IMO).

Short answer: no. Slightly longer answer: there are a few problems with the crates that are relevant to you - The odds of getting a ship from a given crate are low enough that your chances with just two crates are poor. *If* you get a ship, it will almost certainly be Makarov (read the threads about the 'short list' for why), unless you have her already. The crates are - IMO - only worth the money if a) you can buy enough to even out the statistical blips, and b) you have all the poorer ship drop options already. Basically, they're a good choice for old lags who have almost all the existing premiums already, and a very poor choice for newer players with a modest (or non-existent) collection of premium ships. That assumes that - as per your post - you're only interested in ships.

With the snowflakes, I should have enough steel to use my coupon on one of those ships; it'll probably be Somers, as all the rest are fatties (to a greater or lesser extent). For the gold one, it's a choice between Belfast 43 and whatever that T7 US fatty is (Florida?); I may not bother, at least until I see if there is a premium time cheapness for the same gold...

IMO the best T7 DD is Haida, but - due to having no silver counterparts - you really do need a way to get at least a 10 point captain for her, and 13-15 is even better (at least until the rework). If you do get her, invest in coal mod(s), especially for the sonar. Of those in your list, I would go with Z-39 (and put a coal sonar mod on her), although she does have the 'big' guns, which means a BFT captain is less use on her than might be so otherwise; T-61 is probably better tier-for-tier though (and matches exactly the majority of your silver captains), and again wants the coal mod. Sims is great fun, and perhaps suffers less from the current CV/radar meta as her concealment was pretty poor already, so you can perhaps argue she loses less from being regularly spotted; very nimble, has better (or less bad, anyway) AA than most at her tier, and since they got their range buffed, the slow torps can come in handy too. I find Leningrad to be the least useful of the three, but then the 'glue the left mouse button down and never go unspotted' play style doesn't really agree with me; she does have more useful torps than the tech tree equivalent, but her party piece (her speed) has been largely made unremarkable with the arrival of the French DDs.

I can't actually remember which LUs I have; I *think* it's Groz, Zed, YY, Shima, and Gearing... The only one I bother using is Gearing, as - despite radar and CVs - I feel that the category-leading sneakiness is worth giving up some dpm for (especially since a lot of randoms players don't seem to be expecting it).

May I request the following for my poor, hopeless, and much-molested Smaland (for example), please: Modest dakka boost - +20% should do it. Obviously, with all those CVs and radars around (woe is me), we need more powerful and longer-ranged torps - maybe keep the speed and make the rest of the stats a la Gearing? Less spotting would be nice - shall we say 5.4 km, to bring her in line with Kagero. Obviously, more speed is needed; 50 kts seems entirely reasonable (before engine boost, naturally, and a couple more minutes of run-time there would be good too!). That's a good start, and clearly needs to happen - won't someone think of the children DDs?!

Free stuff is free stuff, I guess, but - as I've said in other threads - it seems a bit weird that T8-9 get a more useful reward (for a lot of players anyway) than the T10s do. Mind you, I have opened a couple of freebie basic crates already this year and both had a few hundred doubloons in - that's better than a sharp kick to the happy sacks. I suppose one might even get a ship if you have a *lot* of T10 ships, although that's pretty unlikely (or entirely unlikely in my case, as I've got all the crate premiums already). -

I took my Makarov out for a run in the current Op last night; thought it might be fun to dust off the cobwebs (I've had mine for a couple of years, I think). Some kind soul told me I could get a refund if I wanted; it looks like news of the rigged boxes has spread rather further than one might expect....? Edit: I just checked - it'll be three years on the 2nd of Jan...

I haven't checked this year, but my memory is that if one has every last ship on the premium list for the boxes, you just get one of the other prizes; as I recall the get-a-duplicate-and-get-doubloons compensation mechanism that we sometimes see only kicks in in very unlikely circumstances. The basic crates, which are also the type you get for T10 snowflakes, have a *very* low ship drop chance anyway I believe, although I've had two freebies so far this year and got a few hundred doubloons from each (which I can't carp about).
