Had it with rampant toxicity in the game
Verblonde replied to Karasu_Browarszky's topic in General Discussion
How do people know who reported them - is there a mod or something? Obviously, I can guess, but I rarely *know* for certain (ditto whoever compliments me)... (Surely in the case quoted, that would call for a 'worthy opponent' at least?!) -
Had it with rampant toxicity in the game
Verblonde replied to Karasu_Browarszky's topic in General Discussion
Try not to be (easy for me to say): 95% of people reporting you/shouting at you in chat have no real idea how to play the game compared to you and/or will not have the first idea what has really been going on with you and your ship. 'em! Recall that Karma is essentially meaningless; beyond the number of reports you get, there is no tangible benefit to having lots of it, and no tangible down-side to having zero. If it all gets too much, disable chat for a bit and/or play something else for a while. Either way, actively try and develop a resistance to caring what anyone says in chat (oddly, WOT has helped me in this regard - it's more obvious there that most salt comes from spotty kids who've never known the loving touch of another person and are wildly insufficient in the trouser department, so their views can more easily be disregarded; the 'skill-set' transfers over to WOWS nicely). -

Splendid ideas, OP; this one might require some rephrasing though, to make sure that everyone knows that 'kill stealing' isn't a thing - there seem to be quite a few people (who don't understand the importance of removing guns from the game) who get their knickers in rather a twist over this? This is a good idea too; there are at least two (probably more, but I've got two recently - I think) of this kind of thing in WOT - slightly surprised the idea hasn't been transferred across already. -

That's very kind of you to say, but I certainly find Mutsuki somewhat less easy to play than I do Kami - I think it's probably because Kami's torps reload noticeably faster (47 secs versus 73 secs, base, according to the Wiki; Kami's torps are a bit faster too)... Of course, if you have a bit of patience, anything with 5.4 km surface detection is going to be a bit of a monster at T5; so, @EnacheV, @Execute0rder66 highlights a very good point - if you want more or less the Kami experience (which covers off three of the more notorious rare ships), get yourself Mutsuki, and put a 10 point+ captain and cammo on her. -

This. In spades. Full disclosure though: there is an IS-6 sitting in the garage of my NA WOT account that serves of a reminder of this fact. "Ooo, if I get this (at the time) mighty premium, I shall inevitably be triumphant - quake in fear puny mortals!" <pause> KABLOOEY! <sad trombone noises> -

Hence the observation about data set size, although if you add in Fujin to Kami's stats, the general picture is the same! To be honest, I was being flippant though... Being a bit more sensible, I don't think that there is much doubt that Kami is OP (assuming you know about how vision mechanics work); the main thing that stops her being entirely ridiculous is CV spotting! -

Small data-set but you get the idea (my average WR in DDs is 49.45% at time of writing, in all Randoms)... -
I view it as 'optional but desirable' for a couple of reasons: I find it valuable to monitor exactly how many of the enemy have started to point guns at me and when - do I need to run right away, or do I have another five seconds to unload some torps (and similar thought processes)? The 'torp launch' trick is occasionally handy. It can provide valuable information about what you're facing e.g. you can see an opposing BB and a cruiser; if PT pings up '3' it can indicate that something else is out there, and potentially what it is (assuming you looked at the team line-ups and vaguely know your ships and detection values). I don't run the skill on everything, especially when I don't have a maxed out captain, but I do find the data extremely valuable, and quite frequently so...

I think my RN DD captain looks like this (if you want a non-RL approach): The 'logic' is along the following lines: I would like RL, but basically - for me - I don't find it worth four points (although clearly many do, and I could easily be flat-out wrong); in the past, I found I didn't get *that* much use from it in the current CV and radar heavy meta, and you flag to whoever you're detecting that they're the nearest ship to you - I find this latter point to be not insignificant when playing against RL-equipped ships. RN DDs are really all about the dakka (the torps are 'just' a valuable bonus), so I focus on skills that boost the guns (the BFT nerf sucks, but the skill is IMO probably still worth having, although I usually go AR first). This is built for Daring, so I take the extra healing potion; for a non-healing RN DD, I would probably ditch SI, and take other things instead (probably fires and flooding)... Much as I hate to admit it, WG did achieve one of their stated aims with the captain rework - there certainly seem to be more than one viable DD build for most ships...

I think some of the difference in perception (in Randoms anyway, I don't really think this matters very much; a Detonation is no worse than an afk, or 'that' BB that snipes from A1 etc.) is down to good players versus bad ones - I'm not good at the game, so the arbitrary nature of Detonations doesn't bug me too much as I'm much more likely to get deleted due to being stupid. On the other hand, a good player (you, and plenty of other regulars on here) can control a higher proportion of the things that happen to them in game, so I can see that pure RNG things like Detonation are going to be more irritating for the competent...
-
This is exactly what you should see (although 'several' in one battle is pretty unlikely): if you play ten battles, that's 240 ships involved in proceedings (it *is* 12 ships per side in Randoms, right - I'm only half-way through my first coffee of the day?); if everyone's stats match mine, then at least two of them should Detonate on average... True, but it is pretty low on the priority list (certainly lower than planes, radar, hydro, and anything sneakier than you are)...

Discussion thread for "some interesting info around the world"
Verblonde replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
I'm guessing the sequence of events may have been along the following lines: WG peruse the latest bill of fare from Madam Olga's Esteemed House of Negotiable Affection & Vodka. Realise more money is called for. Further realise that very few people are excited about the new DDs, because they (probably) aren't much good. Desperately try and tweak things so that the whole DD early release event isn't DOA, whilst having to fight an inveterate need to make German stuff rubbish. Joking apart, given what I know about these things (specifically the lack of sneakiness), I'd rather have sea mines with decent range than something faster that you rarely get to use outside Coop. Mind you, it helps to have played things like Black and Sims already... -
FWIW, I play mostly DDs (76%, and change, of my Randoms) and never mount anti-det modules; I would *guess* that I run the anti-det signals at least half of the time, but more usually keep them for modes like Clans/Ranked unless I have a pressing need to not blow up (missions, or something like that). Given all that, I currently show 55 Detonations, against 5,395 battles - that's an incidence rate of about 1.02% i.e. extremely rare by most rational definitions. It's also worth noting that - due to an aversion to 'skulking at range' gameplay - I do tend to get shot a lot, and it's commonly when already damaged, so I should be a prime candidate for regular Detonations if they were as common as some seem to believe. Yeah, as with any random thing, you get 'clumping' but this really isn't something so frequent as to be worth getting one's knickers in a twist over...

Presumably, because it's a nod to the naval history (Hood, Invincible etc. etc.); this is why I personally don't mind the mechanic. Of course, it helps that it's so rare that the threat the mechanic presents is pretty theoretical most of the time...

I've always assumed the eventual T6 GC would be the post-war Russian flavoured version with a few tweaks to turn the existing T5 into a T6. If WG were feeling frisky, they could always make it a 'dual nation' thing a la Rudy in Tanks...

I got the same message on my NA account (I think); frankly, I trust WG with my cell number about as far as I could comfortably spit a rat, so I think I can manage without a container or two...! -
Excellent form - many thanks!

It depends is my, not very helpful, answer. If it's all going pear-shaped on a flank, remember the cardinal rule: stay alive. Depending on which ship you're in, you can sometimes still do a lot for your team with a fighting retreat from a flank that is going Olympic-standard sideways. Let's think about your Lightning specifically though: you have very good stealth, so the enemy will have to try harder to find you and/or burn radar. Also, if your anti-plane kung fu is strong, you can make the CV waste time trying to find/sink you (put islands between you and surface opponents to avoid getting sunk by them when the CV does find you) - the more time the CV has to spend on you, the more time he's leaving your allies unmolested. Lob single fire torps at opponents who are getting close; if you get hits, hurrah, but also try and get them to show broadside to your allies. That's all assuming that the enemy is certainly going to win that flank for whatever reason; if you just picked the 'wrong' flank (in terms of opponents on that side) and your allies can hold against the opposition, then you can either choose to stand with them, but be a bit more conservative (to avoid getting scragged by radar etc.), or head to the other side of the map. In the latter case though, you'll lose time relocating, and you won't escape from any CV that's in play anyway. Do recall that, in the event you're worried about a CV, your side has one too; there is also sometimes scope for using chat to tell your side what you're up to, although it's pure luck whether or not you get people who can make productive use of the information...

which sideof the DD ship is loaded and which not
Verblonde replied to Fastmotion's topic in Newcomers' Section
Besides @Astolfo_Is_My_Waifu's excellent answer, a 'quick and grubby' solution is to toggle the 'zoom out' button (if you're zoomed in for shooting) and look at your torps' fire arc indicators - the ones for loaded launchers appear green, and the ones that are still loading appear orange. (Being able to toggle instantly between fully zoomed in, and zoomed out, is useful for a bunch of other reasons too.) -
Perhaps there could be a 'rental' ship that you get assigned (of a suitable tier); it acts like a regular ship in all respects, apart from having a big flashing sign above it that displays words such as 'shame', 'ignominy', and perhaps 'poor form' etc. Makes perfect sense, and is - I trust - in keeping with the tone of the thread thus far...?

Opinions about vessel speed management
Verblonde replied to Northern_Nightowl's topic in General Discussion
I'm a mediocre (48% overall WR) player, and DD main, so my perspective is more about what behaviours in fatties makes my life harder, so in that sort of context: I think a lot of players know about the 'starter for ten' of leading BBs by the numbers on the aiming scale that equal the shell flight time (and double for cruisers, and so on), so if someone is likely to shoot at you, it can make their life harder if you avoid speeds that play into this aiming method. It won't work against a good player, but most players aren't good (at least not in Randoms). Have you played DDs much? If so, you'll know all about the white 'aiming cone' for torps; that's a very useful tool for assessing what the opposing ship is up to - if there are DDs out there, this is another thing that you want to try and spoof. Think about which DDs you're facing, and what they'll be trying to do; if you're in a fatty, torp DDs will be wondering if you're an easy mark (if you can dev strike a BB early game, you've just removed an important 'damage sponge' from the opposing team), so drive in a way that doesn't give them that impression - speed and course changes will make the aiming cone move around, and suggest to the DD that you aren't easy meat - this *may* encourage them to go after someone else (or just make their torps miss if they launch on you anyway). As much as possible, try and avoid being predictable if facing things with torps; a key part of making use of torps is being able to fire them at areas where you think an enemy will end up when they arrive, and this works surprisingly well (many players are predictable). Basically, you either want to avoid predictable courses/speeds/locations, and where it's unavoidable (some locations are predictable for a reason) try and arrive in such a way that predictive torps will turn up at a different time to you. TL;DR try and avoid being predictable/consistent; this'll make you harder to effectively engage/hit. -
I believe this individual has me on ignore, so I can write what I like and not worry about him hurting himself with any subsequent hissy-fit; anyway, I recall the name from previous occasions - the usual form is to flounce on to the forum noisily declaiming that the game/world is unfair and rigged against him, followed by more noisy declamation that people who explain what's really going on (and offering tips to improve matters) are entirely wrong. I'm still deciding whether it's due to a tenuous grip on reality, or just a lack of subtlety on the part of Google Translate...

It's probably occurred to you already, but a coal hydro mod makes your run time with the relevant consumable utterly ludicrous; I have one on pretty much all my hydro-equipped RN DDs, but I would especially put one on T8 and up - the hydro is a key part of why the RN DDs can be so fearsome, so you might as well get the most out of it.

Mine are a bit of a compromise: the ships themselves are pretty manly, with the secondary battery range mod; the captain is semi-manly, although I'm still refining exactly what I want it* to look like as it has to be 'good enough' for all the German premiums (and Currywurst as that's the silver ship that it's assigned to). At the moment, I'm leaning vaguely in this sort of direction: This is absolutely not a recommendation though, as I'm a) still working on it, and b) pretty bad with BBs outside of PvE. For example, the four points spent on CQC is almost certainly wasted against real people; it can be rather glorious/hilarious in something like Odin against bots, but you're probably dead if you get inside secondary range in Scharn against a real person (your secondaries aren't going to hit much either without the manual control skill). This build is simply about me having fun, rather than being effective (if I want to be effective, or at least not wholly ineffective, I'll play a DD!). TL;DR - don't listen to me on this; listen to someone competent! *Technically 'she' - she's the German HSF manga lass.
