Aviation Cruiser Gameplay - A Suggestion for Wargaming
fnord_disc replied to Asmodaeus's topic in General Discussion
It doesn't sit well with me that you call Tone a CAV. She really isn't. I entirely agree that she should get a special mechanic, but neither Tone nor Ooyodo or Agano is a CAV. The only CAV ever converted was Mogami, and the only BBV ever converted were the two Ises. As I've pointed out elsewhere, the architectural differences between true CAVs and Tone's large floatplane facilities is too great, even if Tone used the same planes as Mogami. As for your suggestion: I think it's very good. -
It's not a real night battle, but I appreciate the effort. Based on what I see, it's just a polar night skin of North but due to the auroras the visibility is unaltered. It's all just graphical. There's no night battle mechanic. Still, it's good to know that they are seriously thinking about how to put night battles in. Bodes well. The other two maps look cool based on the screenshots. Balancing changes look good. Carrier changes look dumb. Zone Capture sounds kind of ridiculous but we will see. Destroyer changes look stunted and ineffectual. Map edge change yay. Missions yay.

Königsberg has a second armor layer, but it's paper-thin. 10mm or something like that.
-
I don't really know what to think about the Nürnberg. Imo the single problem of the Kberg is the absurd fragility of the ship. Whether or not Nberg is a good ship or not is impossible to say for me without testing it.
-
It is agile and easy to dodge with, but the modules get knocked out all the time and the citadel is huge. Any hits you take cripple you. 2-3 full salvos? So 30-36 hits? Sounds realistic, but that's a lot of hits if you ask me. A Murmansk executes DDs a lot faster.

Mutsuki gameplay How is that even possible?
fnord_disc replied to rigawe's topic in General Discussion
I don't think this is an accurate comparison. Nagato is quite strong when played to her strengths, which are different from Fusos. Mutsuki has the same strengths as Minekaze, but she's just not as good. -
While the HE strike damage is poor and it really shows against destroyers, the high accuracy and the ballistics compensate for the lowish fire chance. My fire damage is consistently good. What cripples the ship for me is horrible survivability couple with the mixed offensive abilities. Basically the entire ship is a citadel and it has no armor whatsoever.
-
They will also carry out queued orders as well if you game them with the SHIFT key. This is useful if you want a certain attack angle, or if you want them to dodge heavy AA before they attack something.
-
Well, the ships is very strong when it's top tier. I get nice games in it as well when the matchup is right. Pictures related. But your own tier and above is really painful, a lot more painful than in other ships imo. You just cant reliably damage anybody. A couple of good games don't make it a good ship.

Captain Retraining Is Too Hard (At 18+ points)
fnord_disc replied to Aerroon's topic in General Discussion
In my opinion retraining experience should be fixed. I appreciate the low retraining experience in lower tiers, but the captain doesn't have skills that make him worth retraining anyway. By the time you've retrained him, you're almost at the next ship and he has to be retrained again! In my opinion this discourages actually advancing up the tech tree and instead provokes players to think about finding a sweet spot somewhere along the way where they can keep their captain and either stop entirely or use a second one for the coming tiers. I don't think the experience necessary for the skills is too high. Getting to 19 skills is supposed to take time. But retraining should be fixed or at least capped.- 64 replies

I agree with a lot of that, but I disagree with your points about the AP ammunition. HE is surprisingly decent due to the high RoF, but AP is really unreliable against equal-tier cruisers and above. Trying to citadel a Furutaka is an exercise in futility, and Furutaka will eat you alive with her 20.3cm guns. Omaha is much stronger too. When I saw the stats I thought I would be disappointed with the HE performance, but now I think it's the AP ammunition which is a much bigger problem. Keeping the enemy at long range mitigates the horrible survivability of the ship, but your influence on the battle takes a nosedive.

Where do dds store those 200 torps they can spam within 20 minutes ?
fnord_disc replied to AlwaysBadLuckWithTeams's topic in General Discussion
Well, paper design is too harsh. Amagi was damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake when she was quite far along to completion, and her sister ship Akagi went on to be completed as a famous aircraft carrier. Tosa was scrapped because of the WNT and Kaga was converted to a carrier instead of the damaged Amagi. Without the earthquake, Amagi and Akagi would have attacked Pearl Harbor as sister ships. -

Why does nobody understand that any attempt at "realism" would mean all ships have to sail straight for the entire match to be able to even get a firing solution? -
Oh. My mistake, I didn't read properly. Okay, honestly now. Compared to Furutaka, I don't how this could possibly be considered balanced. Königsberg is more maneuverable and has marginally better AA, but it's still crap. Furutaka is faster, has much more HP, better armor, smaller citadel (subjective), far better torpedoes and similar main guns. Königsberg has great range with them. Basically, the only way to make this ship work in my opinion is by harassing people at maximum range. That makes it more or less useless because it can't do anything once the team around it wilts away. If anybody looks at you, you're dead.

Cruisers are really narrow. All citadels I got so far were belt penetrations.
-
Most of the strengths were obvious from the mined stats, but I'm very surprised how extremely fragile she is. Engine and steering get knocked out all the time, almost as often as on a destroyer, turrets often get knocked out, and the citadel feels very large. The extremely low survivability basically forces you to shoot from ~13-15km, and for that the guns don't really have the necessary oompf. You can hit without much effort due to the great ballistics, but against cruisers the AP is really unreliable at that range and against everything else the HE is trash. I don't think this is a very good ship, to be honest.

I'd like to have carrier divisions too, but I agree that the possibilities for abuse are just too great. -
Battleships get too little points/xp
fnord_disc replied to SkybuckFlying's topic in General Discussion
You only do an average damage of 16k with Wyoming. That's very low. Your hit rate of 16% is also very low. For comparison, my Arkansas (which is basically the same ship) has 42k average damage and 27% hit rate. You simply don't hit enough and don't damage your enemies. -

Yeah, especially a German premium would be nice. The Russian line is coming up and we have Grem and Murmansk, which are both useful premiums for the Russian DD line, and also a bunch of other Russian ships like the Diana. The German line just has Tirpitz.
