Good points there. Few short notes: - Skip AP bombs. Way too inconsistent against T9-10 BBs - use 1000lbs HE - Fighters are slower than empty bombers. Thats how the game works so dont chase them. Strafe if you reach but dont chase. Overall I got somewhat hang of it (new Essex) but personally I think its weaker that old strikesetup was. Sold yesterday, going Midway.

7 more games. Getting the hang of this but still dont like the idea of new Essex. Midway is researched ages ago and it looks overall better. 7 games, 57% WR, 2484 PR, 98k avg dmg, 33 planes. Except the damage sounds like my average. Its good time to end it here. I think you're doing it right after enemy players like that Kurfurst lose their temper or game later one Khaba driver called me cheater while runnin straight into single torped wave. My Essex times are over for now.
-
Indeed it touched a nerve. Maybe 22k of flooding had something to do with it.
-
If a enemy Kurfurst player calls you "flying whores" is that the right time to quit CVs for today?
-
Looking pretty good. Essex main problem, T8 TBs, are corrected by having 2 squads and plenty of reserves. Essex has neither. With Midway it seems to be working and you still have about half the planes through to a pretty hard AA target like Iowa and have the hangar to replace the losses.
-
One game can be anything. Also played first Essex game today at "unicum" level with 115k or so damage but thats just one game. Used to do 113k average and with this present tub its impossible. On a good game +150k sure but those +240-250k games that I used to... You just run out of attack planes far before that. And after that you just fly around with spare fighters... Is Midway any better?
-
Could anyone that likes new Essex step up? Another 4 games today. 50% WR which is ok, PR 1282 which is about half I used to have, avg dmg 73k something which is 40k below my average. 23,75 planekills. +30 planekills is pretty easy but everything else its useless. Boring cruising around, playing 0-0 with enemy CV.. And if team sucks those point-and-click dudes play you over. Point and click fighter battles, point and click AP bombs, kill or two and "decent" result. Feels like idiots ship now. Sorry. Very very close to sell it...
-
Yep. Notser liked it but looked like opposition was very weak from the enemy CV. And its also very dependent to MM. If you are top tier and AA is weak propably this new loadout is better than old. I think Flambass also covered Lexington and Midway last night.
-
Actually 2x6 USN TB strike is more powerful. You can actually hit all 12 into Bismarck - Amagi size target. It doesnt have to be Kurfurst. IJN have wider spread so you normally hit 3/4 of each squad. In this sense its reasonable to limit the efficiency some way. I guess its also easier to crossdrop DDs since spread is so tight. Its much harder to slip between torps. I thought that later one myself. Is this the WG way to hammer down overpopulated BBs.
-
Yep. At least its good there is a choice. You can use which ever suits playstyle. Overall Essex biggest problem now is the TBs which are too slow and weak. In Lex they propably do fine but at T9-10 they just drop from the sky. Midway at least has the spares and can send off two squads to overrun AA.
-
After day of hairpulling frustration opinion might change. Sure it smashes nicely when stars are in line but overall way too inconsistent for my taste. Did two sorties to Kurfurst yesterday and did 99k to him total but thats the highlight. 2 squads to cruiser and got 2x800, 2-4k per squad to Yamato...
-
Thanks. A lot of useful information. So that was one 7 plane squad per strike in both cases, not two squads? Its pretty much what I thought it would be. Lex at T8 and Essex + Midway share same bombloads even the bomber varies. Same 1000lbs HE or AP bomb and the only difference which to use is what ships you encounter in actual games. Sure you get into T10s in Lex but you also see top tier games where you can nuke New Mexicos, Bayerns and such. Very different than in the other end of scale - Midway - which sees only T10 action. One shotting cruisers can be funny but personally I see things like Minotaurs and Des Moines no-fly zones as they are and striking them is pretty much the last resort if you absolutely have to do that. And did you try what 7 plane 1000lbs HE strike does to a lightly armored Minotaur? It doesnt even have accuracy messing DFAA. It does hurt too. A lot.

That sounds like life in (USN) CV. In some battles you can be a idiot while whole team cramps up into one corner and if you stay calm and help turning the game there they praise you just few minutes later. I actually think Essex had better spotting capability with old 1-1-3 strike. 5 squads in the air and empty DB makes a great DD spotter. Now with 2-1-2 you practically have to use your fighters for spotting without killing all your strike potential.
-
Good. This is intresting.
-
Have you tried Lex HE bombs? They are also 1000lbs like the AP ones. I understand the difference with Enterprice that has stock 500lbs HE bombs and upgraded bombers with 1000lbs AP? So they are not even comparable. Essex, propably Lex and of cource Midway, have identical planes with only difference in bombload.
-
Sure but it doesnt mather. Even if you hit all damage is way too inconsistent. I dont care if I can delete single Bismarck with single swing if it doesnt even make a dent to Yamato. HE also deletes AA so you can use that to soften up enemy for TB. Single T8 TB squad is very poor. They just die like flies and take forever to fly to target and back. Maybe with Midway which has plenty of reserves.

Manual drop circle for Essex AP bombs is pretty much Shimakaze size. I matched them very closely when I got to drop it.
-
Oh.. One more up. Changes free some 130k free xp and 4-5M credits. Got the Shokaku elited before even getting it and still have +40k free xp for spare.
-
I agree. Its worse now. Its bad in everything. Old strike did damage and AS ruled sky, now you dont neither. 17 games today. -1100 to PR, -10% WR. 'nuff said.

***rant*** Okey dokey. 17 games with Essex today. Stats before the day: 231 battles, 57,58% winrate, 2468 PR, 113452 avg dmg, 1,41 avg frags, 22,25 planekills. Todays stats: 17 battles, 47,06% winrate, 1409 PR, 73823 avg dmg, 0,88 avg frags, 26,24 planekills. Tried both AP and HE bombs, met both Essex and Taiho enemies, mostly other Essexes which isnt a surprice. Maybe I should start with ups: + Aircontrol is easier and 1:1 fight challenging Taiho is doable + AP bombs hurt (with limitations). One shotted AFK Shima, plenty of hits to KM BBs... +- AP bombs dont need aiming. Autodrop is ok, just approach from right angle I guess thats pretty much it. Downs: - Fighters are crap (T8?) - normal (no AA spec) DDs like Shimas shoot them down if you try to spot them - TBs are total crap. Too slow and too weak. You can use single squad once - it almost every time dies off before returning to CV - Only 1 TB - you cant kill DDs unless they behave like idiots and drive into torps. - AP bombs are overall crap. Sure you CAN cause major damage and even oneshot things if very lucky. As average almost useless. Hit cruiser with good aim 2x7 DBs and did 2x800 damage. 2x800?! Inconsistency is at idiotic levels. - Because of fighter loadout your spares for attack aircrafts are limited and you often run out - crap My keyboard control is still all over the place and at least 2 fighter squad control needs a lot of work. I think this setup suits better for IJN veterans... Changed to HE bombs in my last game. Instantly better results. Still lost but 143k damage... AP bombing Montanas, Yamatos and such is totally useless. You do 3-5k damage per squad and thats below half what 1000lbs HE does PLUS the fires. I think I might give it another day and if it doesnt get any better by my own actions its going for sale. It just feels its now useless in everything. Old strike at least packed punch and those who liked AS really got AS cancer loadout. Now it feels just bad in almost every way.
-
I liked my Ranger and run it 1-1-1 then. Its nice clear and easy to manage loadout and with Ranger hangar you have plenty of spares. I had pretty nice success with it but WR wasnt that great. What comes to Saipan its only OP at good hands. If you autodrop its a mess and you easily run those T9 fighters dogfighting Ranger 7 plane squad one by one and with dogfighting expet that Ranger squad eats them alive. Did it many times. But if you stay away with better speed, fight on your own terms and most importantly use manual drops and strafe a lot (with success) it is a strong ship.
-
Its actually quite intresting to try out Essex with new loadout. How damage behaves and ore importantly how WR and PR start to change. At least most of AS dudes are in deep crap. I met one today and flew most of his fighters around the map with empty DB squad. Shot down couple planes less than he did and got couple of kills as well. New setup evens things up and you can just strafe the sh*t out of them. Experimenting wont even be that bad. I guess most unicums are going straight to T10 and Midway testing and overall above T8 you dont get more than one CV in a game which makes things easier. But I am still very tempted to buy myself Saipan. After mandatory 1-1-1(?) loadout on Ranger things turn more and more towards Saipans.
-
Taking other ship classes into account you can make a killer game with DD just by spotting for team and getting caps.
-
Like said. Its whole packadge. Air control / anti CV - spotting - damage / kills. You can black out enemy CV, spot everything and ninja 2 kills with almost dead enemies. Still not that much to team. Its much more than any single thing. Air control alone isnt it, raw damage isnt it, spotting isnt it. All together... Strike Essex has been leaning strongly to damage and kills sacirficing others.
-
Useless? So what is wrong with those AS loadouts? WR might be decent but you win or lose with the team. You can black out enemy CV completely and spot everything but cant deal damage. Its triangle. Air control (fighters) - scouting - raw damage. IJN has plenty of balanced options for it, USN CVs have been leaning towards one depending on loadout. 2-1-2 loadout will be better in aircontrol than present strike 1-1-3. The rest I dont know. Fighters arent good for scouting and raw damage is very propably going down. But maybe avg WR might go up.
