It's probably because of the unusual torpedo launchers. It has one swivel and two side mounted, so likely this odd configuration causes the issue.

Phlys thoughts on whats wrong with the game

Good to see that the youtubers have woken up - they have been strangely quiet on the current issues. -
OMG - WTF have they just done to CV..unbelievable
Silvercat18 replied to xBamBamx's topic in General Discussion
Ah, I wondered who that was - your account certainly outlined the issues. Previous to this patch I`ve hit battleships with around 9 torpedoes and seen them shrug it off. Now I wouldn't even be able to do that. -
Torpedo spread nerf at IJN torpedo bombers in patch 0.3.1.2

The logic of this must surely be that few people played CV's so they are trying to encourage low skill players to play them. That won't work. That sort of player wont enjoy the carrier style at all. They will be much happier playing a ship that shoots and hits its target close up. Carrier play is a whole lot of nothing broken up by periods of intense focus. Limiting those periods just makes it a "meh" experience that neither low nor high skill players will enjoy. Not to mention that you cant make a division/ platoon if you play carriers and its thus a very lonely experience that again requires a lot of dedication. I can get in a destroyer and murder people. I can pull out one of my battleships and blow the heck out of things and I can even take out a cruiser and spam HE all day long - all of these are very satisfying - whether I had skill or not I would be blazing away, with fire and asplosions - awesome. With my carrier I get joy from one thing and slightly damaging someone once every three minutes is not it. They shouldn't be ruining the class for the few people who actually will put up with playing it. -
Does anyone know what the Russian forums are saying about the current situation? From what I understand it is their feedback that reaches the ears of the developers, so it would be interesting to see if they think the same as we do.

I heard an interesting account of someone who stopped his carrier and tried to kill himself with the new torpedo spread. ...he failed. -
I think the way you changed your post is a strong and accurate reflection of how most of us feel right now. The low number of carrier players were very dedicated and withstood several negative changes in previous patches, but there comes a point where even we throw up our hands in despair and give in. It's a really sad day and the first time I have regretted taking part in what has thus far been an amazing game experience. People are being hurt now and the joke of it wore thin a long time previous to this. This isn't beta balance, its class eradication.

The problem is that this isn't happening. We gave feedback that carriers were heavily affected by the AA buff and that they were "in a bad place" and seldom played. We also said dive bombers were terrible. The response to that was to buff ship turning rates and to force American carriers into a heavy fighter/ dive bomber loadout that meant most found them boring to play and hard to gain xp with. So, many of us abandoned the American carriers we had played and went to play Japanese ones, with no fighters at all. Many at that stage give up on carriers completely because they become even less fun to play. Battleship numbers skyrocket and not just because people are playing American ones....with carriers becoming less of a threat, BB becomes more out of control and cruisers get hammered. Cruiser numbers drop considerably. Destroyers also struggle with the buffed turn rate of their targets. New hotspot map makes carrier play extremely difficult, to the point where some suggest removing carriers from that map or making serious changes to improve their placement. Response to that is to nerf IJN torpedo bombers and to make them unplayable at the only thing they are good at. The presence of an enemy fighter specialised carrier already shuts them down anyway or forces them into a highly limited playstyle. We are now at the point where carriers have gone from "unpopular", to "struggling" and are now beyond that at "dead". If there was going to be some positive adjustment, it would have happened long ago, so why bother with feedback when it has already been ignored several times or acted on in a negative manner. -
Exactly how I feel - I am no longer playing carriers after this change. They are not in a state fit for play even by dedicated fans of the playstyle. They are not even in a state worthy of beta testing and in a week I doubt we will see any being played at all, especially as those few who stuck with USN fighter loadouts will find they get even more lonely, pointless games than they currently already do.

Well that's it. When they changed the American carriers, I sold my ranger and moved to IJN. Now I`ll sell that and will play battleships like they want me to. I despair at the carrier changes that have taken place in the last month. It would not surprise me if they get a speed nerf next, but it wont matter, because there wont be anyone playing them. -
One important thing that didnt get into tomorrow patch notes

I hope they picked supertesters who actually play carriers - I know a few who haven't touched them at all. -
Noticed a new trend of unfair play as of late.

I`ve torpedoed myself by accident once, though I didn't actually give the order to fire. When planes are initially launched, they go into escort mode and if the carrier is under close attack, they`ll drop their torpedoes all over the place trying to "defend it". -
The spotting ranges in this game are a bit mysterious. The other day I was chasing a carrier in my battleship and I couldn't see it till it was under 7k away from me. This actually meant it got close enough to attempt a ram against me. I`m still pretty mystified about this one as my destroyer is often seen at around 9k and my own carriers at way over that.
-
I think the MM is struggling because the classes went out of balance with the last patch. Very few carriers, cruisers are taking a battering and the previously stable numbers at each tier have been thrown all over the place as people abandon certain lines in favour of others.

Ok....should I pre-order to get into closed beta?

I just can't see a way to make the Kitakami work...
Silvercat18 replied to Remi_Drexel's topic in General Discussion
I think a lot of dedicated people have tried to make it work and failed. It may be that "figuring out how to play it properly" means figuring out not to play it at all. -
I am glad to see this patch - hopefully with fix all those loading and lag issues.
-
I got sent a survey by email - was for the beta-testers, maybe its something to do with that?
-
I have seen a lot of speculation that the server itself is weak and that it cant cope with the increase of player numbers. If so, then patching will be of limited help.

Its that phrase that holds it back - "underpowered and overpowered at the same time" - I want to analyse that. Firstly, it doesn't make any sense, because if something is both, then its balanced. The alternative to this is "situational", which is probably a better way to say how the vessel is, ie "occasionally effective". It could have ten million torpedoes and still suck terribly, because the numbers are irrelevant if the ship isn't in a position to use them. Sadly though, the gimmick is what holds it back and causes the ship irrationally nerfed. I think this illustrates a problem in the balance system that world of warships is using in its development, which appears to take the "impression" of a ship's effectiveness over its actual effectiveness. Ships are being balanced on hype and imagination - see the situation regarding the carrier class for more illustrations of this effect in action. -
Carriers should not run out of planes. With the current situation of "carrier balance", we are now seeing IJN carriers who have lost everything in the first five minutes of play and American carriers who have nothing to do because their fighters have no real function other than to cause that situation to happen. The end result is you get people stuck playing the game who are effectively trapped for the next ten or more minutes in a ship that takes no further part in the action. This is made especially bad in that carriers are often the last vessels standing and we are now getting situations where the end of games is seeing ships that cant actually contribute towards the victory....except by dieing and thus they run away. My proposal to fix this is that carriers should slowly regenerate their supply of planes over time. This would reflect reality as lone planes limp back from the fight and are patched up, to a state where they can be returned to the battle once again. There would also be planes that return in an un-repairable state but whose parts can be scavenged to fix their comrades. Being "dead" doesn't not necessarily mean being blown to bits, it would often mean coming back in a state where they are "out of the fight", but that doesn't mean such a return is useless. We would still get the situation where a carrier can run out of planes, but this time, if the carrier can stay alive for a while, it would be able to get back in the fight, even if it was in a limited way. This would be equivalent of another class being heavily damaged but still being able to fight if the enemy was not to finish it off ( a common occurrence at the end of games). It even opens up the potential for more captain skills, with a focus on plane repair times. As it is, the carrier skills are limited and one simply magically adds a plane to all the squadrons - for reasons. There are a lot of crew dedicated to keeping those birds in the air, but at the moment, their skill, numbers and achievements are not reflected in the actions of the ship....which is a missed opportunity, especially as repair could be used as a way to differentiate ships nationally (maybe the german vessels could be good at patching planes up, for example). This would be good for the game and could do with being put in place, perhaps as a mirror the ammunition system that will be brought into play for other vessels in the near future. All thoughts welcome!

I usually play Japanese destroyers and after reading the comparison, I tried out the American ones. They get twice as many torpedoes and the torpedoes go faster - why did nobody tell me about this?

News! Post in Russian Portal... tells some things about the future.
Silvercat18 replied to ephex's topic in General Discussion
I don't see that the premiums are worth the money so far. Their cost is high and their performance is either "meh" or actually worse than standard vessels. Look at the Kitakami - the numbers show that it is performing poorly and it is hampered by a perception of being "OP OMG so many torps!!!111" - when really, it is made of tinfoil and turns like a moose, rendering those torpedoes useless. The balance in this game seems damaged by poor perception of ship abilities. There are still people on the forum arguing that a carrier killing a vessel once every 4 minutes is staggeringly overpowered.....despite normal gunfire being vastly more effective in every aspect. Same with torpedoes, which are apparently super awesome, despite their delay, inaccuracy and the fact that gunfire is often, again, superior in every way. I play all the classes of ship and the perception people have of some classes is often horribly biased to the point of fantasy. If they are going to give a free ship to beta testers, then one rule of that should be at least 50 games in each of the classes.
