The biggest chunks of money WG get are in people who pay their way up the tech tree by converting free XP. Most people (largely the ones that don't come to the forums) wanna play top tier all the time and so the highest tier premiums are the best sellers. They've got two moneymaking methods here that both exploit the desire for instant progression in a kind of two-step way (buy prem ship, then pay more to convert XP from it). Giving players T9/10 premiums (tier 8 is typically regarded by players as where high tier starts, but from WG's game design and business standpoint it's 9, and in WoT most of the T9 tanks are essentially only lite versions of the T10s, so T9 and 10 are largely on the same power level compared to the differences between 8 and 9) gets them the instant gratification at a probably lower price (they'd be... I guess £50? while T8 prem + converting XP off it will total like £75) and means there's no grind whatsoever which means the player is not at all invested into the grinding part of the game, so they don't get like emotionally attached to it and stuff. I'm just rambling at you but I hope that makes some sense.

Bam, instant buy. She's a lot longer and slimmer than I thought from pictures and the regular Kaiser's slightly bulkier silhouette. She's beautiful, and the 5km secondaries, huehuehue! Now we just need to wait for the Wilhelmshaven flag when the ranked season ends. After four battles (all victories): I feel kind of dirty, but I'd be playing this ship even if she were weak. Devastating strikes against British cruisers seem like they'll be a regular occurance... WG really need to improve the state of those ships, but even the cruisers with HE can't do a lot to Albert. She's got that Nokolai thing where there's pretty much no superstructure to shower with damage.

Why is nobody going for ram/torps when game outcome is decided with a few minutes left?
StringWitch replied to viceadmiral123's topic in General Discussion
Only on low tier DDs and... actually I should put them on Mikasa too. Would also use on Saipan due to lack of gun batteries meaning ramming is her only option in a direct confrontation, but the CV signal limit of 4 means there's always something else I'd rather have. Nor do I. Please explain if you would. -
This... why?

AP max damage is what's been wrong with the game since its creation imo; it climbs too exponentially with increased calibre. BB accuracy should be more consistent and less lolpen oneshot.
-
No, I don't. They've always been the best cruiser line.

I wasn't intent on playing these ships anyway, and the fact they're so restrictive seals the deal. A cruiser, more than the other classes, needs the choice of ammo types. I took Aurora out against the low tier flood of RN cruisers and dumped steaming hot 3k HE salvoes on them while only taking minor damage over time from their AP thanks to muh inclined deck huehuehue. As you climb the tiers you face the problem of players who know to angle; as you drop down you face ye olde ships with sloped internal armour so you can't citadel them anyway. The only time RN cruisers shine is when the enemy makes a mistake, or if they can get close enough to drop torps before getting deleted. Both good and bad ships can do these things anyway, so as a prime tactic they are pretty fruitless and uninteresting.

They could take a page from Das Boot's cinematography. The use of scale models is something I really like about pre-CG films, though I suppose the interior set part is a lot easier to do for a submarine with only one hatch leading outside. In any case, them not even attempting to dress Alabama up is just... amazing.

The wiki says she can simultaneously mount hydro, radar and smoke. I doubted that the writer of the article knows the meaning of 'simultaneously', but since everyone's saying she's so awesome, does she actually get a smoke/sensor combo?

Shinkaiseikan the 'boorus call 'ancient destroyer oni'. If she don't count, then I'm torn between Asashimo and Kiyoshimo. Can anyone tell me, what's the appeal of Kaga? Why there's so much fanart of her? -
Ha, but you could do it! The 4" secondaries do fire HE rounds.

Cyclones only appear in T7+ battles. It's acquisition range btw (well it's called spotting range now or something but still), not radio range; it's how far over the horizon the spotters on your own ship's masts can see. Ships are always in radio contact with each other; you never completely lose contact with them on the minimap, unlike in WoT.

It differs in that RN cruisers are UP instead of OP and directly weak to German BBabies. Battleships are too strong atm, so when they released the German line not only did the number of BBs inflate, but the number of cruisers dropped to like 3 a match even on lower tiers and DDs started to climb (in my observation). Cruisers are weak and designed to be the most popular class, so the inflation of them on the servers won't destabilise the meta anywhere near as much. Mikasa would like a word.

Containers - what will be your strategy?
StringWitch replied to ilhilh's topic in General Discussion
I'll try my luck. I'm good for everything else and hope I can get Kitakami Tone Konig Albert okay, reasonable expectations this time: Katori. I might go for signals if I could pick which ones, whether individually or from a set. If I could boost my odds of getting Sierra Mike for my Ishizuchi and Atlanta I'd do it sometimes. -
1. Nation ordering in carousel is reversed from past versions of the game. Now Britain is last and Germany first. 2. N/A 3. N/A 4. I wouldn't expect this to change on a whim; that's really unhelpful. 5. N/A

Having to wait for an animation and click open for each container in sequence is annoying. COSHH symbols on the side of a barrel are also far too modern.

Tier 2-5 premiums (there will never be tier 1 prems except things like those April Fool's event ships) have a 30% XP bonus. Tier 6+ premiums have a 50% XP bonus. Some premiums are starting to get alternative or extra bonuses with their camos, like Prinz Eugen (an extra 50% commander XP on top of the usual bonus, afaik, to make up for not getting any special consumable like Atago and Kutuzov). That's just WG's strange habit of overpricing the heavy vehicles in all their World of X games. It makes sense to an extent, like people are always eager to throw money at Tirpitz so they can charge a lot for her, but for old ships like Mikasa and Ishizuchi it's quite mysterious, as the vast majority of players are only tentatively aware/interested of/in WWII-era naval history and no other period.

Mikasa. Find an enemy BB to shoot you in the bow. As an added bonus, you'll also farm Close Quarters Experts. Ishizuchi used to be best, but since the buff her magazine looks like this.

Hakuryu Secondaries Only VS 10 Nicholas! [+Bonus]
StringWitch replied to Pupu_prpr's topic in Aircraft Carriers
People did this with the halloween event carrier (armed with the notoriously low-velocity 5"/38 gun) last year. It's as absurd as it is amusing to see even the battleships in those matches struggle against carrier secondaries. Still, realistically speaking, it's actually quite... well, realistsic, for a CV to rival cruisers in terms of firepower. The Lexington class had 8" gun turrets until 1940. Wish we had that hull in-game, though we could yet see it if Saratoga becomes a premium or something. Oh now that explains why my secondaries seem surprisingly useful in heavy cruisers. I even have the signal on Indianapolis after getting 3 CQEs with her. What kind of dispersion do carriers get? Their secondaries seem quite remarkable as well; I once got a CQE at the same time as a Double Strike in Ryujo while I killed someone with my planes on the other side of the map as my guns nailed a pursuing DD.- 4 replies

People have the idea that something costing money has greater inherent value than 'free' ships. It's an intuitive notion to a mind brought up in a first world society where everything has a price and by and large you do get what you pay for. Premiums often are bettter (see Atago, Murmansk, Texas, Gremyashchy, Scharnhorst, Saipan), but this is by no means a given; tech tree ships are just as likely to be good for their tier (though there is a caveat in that WG will nerf regular ships but not premiums).

Leningrad - is it Kiev on steroids?
StringWitch replied to anonym_O8tf3somLU6N's topic in Destroyers
It's Gremy on steroids. One extra gun (with a limited firing arc) and stealth torps are now quads instead of triples (complete with longer reload). It's still a good DD, but for for being two tiers higher I think it's pretty underwhelming. Even compared to Anshan it's still, I would say, a bit worse tier-for-tier. And if Kamikaze vs Minekaze has tought me anything about speed differences, sacrificing a few knots for better vesatility (ie. being Blyskawica) is generally more useful. It is the only premium Russian DD that hasn't been pulled from sale, so it's good as a crew trainer or something different that can share your super endgame captain(s), but with the glut of Russian premium cruisers and DD captains working well enough for the likes of Murmansk and Krispy Kreme, I don't think Leningrad brings much extra value. -
Ranked Battles Season 5 - Show off your High Scores
StringWitch replied to MrConway's topic in General Discussion
I didn't take any shots of battle results, only one of the rewards for ranks 18-15 with the ship that got me them (along with 10 extra of a couple kinds from an earlier New Mexico battle). CVs are fun in ranked, if nothing else, since you can't get rekt by +2 battleship AA.
