I suppose it's a case of viewing history from a different perspective. The Spanish sailed against us with the French at Trafalgar 1805, they then invaded Portugal with the French in 1807 so you can see how they would appear to be at war with the British at the start of the Peninsular Campaign. Not many people realize the Spanish War of Independence started in early 1808 when the Spanish national administration dissolved and the regional Junta's took over until the Supreme Central Junta took charge in September of that year. Sufficient to say that the Spanish forces fought bravely against the French and the Spanish Supreme Junta eventually evolved into the beginnings of the present liberal/democratic Spanish system of government we know today. The Cadiz Cortes met regularly during the two and a half year Siege of Cadiz and once the city was able to be relieved (because of Wellingtons victory over Marmont at Salamanca forcing the French out of Andalusia) the survival of the Spanish Government contributed decisively to the liberation of Spain.

More of a raid than an invasion.
