Bismarck is much more versatile on T8, than Pommern on T9, especially if you use the gun accuracy module on Bismarck. You can use the same module on Pommern, but the guns are stll lacking and even more handicapped with a lot more games involving long range shooting. Also the handling of the Pommern is much worse. When I first moved from Bismarck to FdG, I did not understand how it was supposed to be an improvment, especially because of the handling. Bismarck moves like a battle cruiser, while Pommern is much more of a brick. Pommern can be fun, but has a lot of frustrating games. She’s excellent in 3 vs 3 or 1 vs 1 modes, but you see those rarerly. I would’t say to try FdG first, as FdG has less guns and more frequent reload, feels like a different ship. There are not much coal BB options at the moment, Marco is still weak, Kearsarge is the strongest of the pack but has a high skill floor. I also spent some steel on coal ships, when my steel gathering was so slow that I would only had chance to get a steel ship in years. I regretted it a bit later, when I was close to get my first steel ship, but not that much. You can wait and see if there is a better coal ship coming for Christmas, like the Verdi is kind to expected to come out soon.

I’ve also seen a streamer who opened Asashio from his first 10 premium containers (having no other black ships). Given it should be 1:12 chance, there seems to be too many anecdotes.

Ok, guys. From 10 non premium black friday containers, you have about 3.1% chance to get at least one ship. Soo from 100 forumites, we can expect 3 (that means in practice 2-5 persons) to get at least one ship. For the connaiseurs, see the maths below

Does knowing the odds changed your behaviour?

Well, WG gave you the possibility to move up to gold and play there in one week. If there will be enough players then you can do it. As a very early bird, it’s your problem to wait for the teammates, or to play in the evening, when there are more players online. Personally I did not even bother going further than rank 5 bronze the first week, I was rather grinding my T9 ships with the 100% first win bonus.

You can consider Tirpitz. My favorite BB, and I have all the BBs from your list. Having torps, she’s well suited for coop. In randoms, she’s not the best ship, but the most satisfying to play.

Actually I dish out more with the Siegfried than with the Alaska (my WR is also higher). The trajectories and then pen on BBs are much better.

Actually, Atago is my most successgul cruiser. It can hit DDs hard, thanks to the precise guns and excellent trajectory, helping your DD to win the fight. For team utility I have RPF, which can pinpoint enemy DDs quite well, if you consider additional info you gather (e.g. when you get spotted). She has quite good turning, allowing her to avoid most shells while using all her guns, she can tank the rest of the shells thanks to her armor, and she has heal. She can disappear thanks to her low concealment. This is a big advantage over other cruisers that are clumsy, have low concealment (e.g. Mainz), paper armor and no heal. Also the she has a lot of torpedo power with excellent angles. The only drawback that you have to learn dodging shells while kiting and you have to be careful with your positioning. If you like to be constantly on the move, turning away from shells while kiting, then Atago is rewarding, if you prefer shooting from behind/over an island, than she is a bad choice.

Too be fair, there are some sniping BBs, like the Slava. You can also snipe with Yamato and Thunderer, but both of them are more effective mid range. Jean-Bart is definetly not a sniper ship.

That's the skill ceiling. The skill floor is that unskilled players do not get dev strikes and can score hits.

My reason to create the poll was to make people think about it. Your post was a very valuable addition.

Jean-Bart is fun to play (I coined her as ‘Fun-Bart’), has a low skill floor, and you can have good games with her. No ship is without drawbacks, and no ship is universally good for everyone, but JB is in the top 5, in my opinion.

The question is how much will you play that T6BB. Also, you only get doubloons back, if you already had the ship, but then you just bought a black camo. 3 premium crates give you 31% chance for a premium ship, but out of 12, and you might easily get one that you already have in non black version, or one that you’d rarerly play.

You might value some other purchases more. E.g, if your preferred playstyle is too far from that of the Alaska, then you might find more joy in spending those doubloons on something else. Of course you can buy doubloons again in the future, but then it’s basically would be the price that you paid for the Alaska.

I added the ‘never buy lootboxes’ option, then I removed it. I thought people would choose ‘I spend the same’, that is they still spend 0.

Tirpitz

I’d be happy to get a black Tirpitz or Atago Black from a free container, but I would not pay for them, as I already own the regular ones. I’m not interested in the Dunkerque, as I have the Arizona which is a better ship. Also I have most of the ships I want in regular versions, so gambling for the Asashio that I’m kind of interested in, would not worth it. I’m contemplating over buying the Asashio Black directly, but I’m not sure about the purchase. I might better use those doubloons in a future dockyard event. Also, I’m not a DD main but have a lot of excellent DDs to cover my need, so buying another one might not be the best investment.

Alaska is not a kiting cruiser, like the Japanese ones, but a tanky radar cruiser with excellent AP and less efficient HE. If you like cruisers then in might worth it, most people like her, personally I prefer to play the German super cruisers.

Saipan’s damage output is junk. Not worth spending money on her. She was added as a filler to the BF crates.

You can directly buy the ship you want and of which you don’t have the non black version yet. Why did you go gambling, knowing that it could drop any of the 16 ships?
