It's the reason that with the last free respec after the last clanbattles, I've respecced some boats to go without rpf (z52, fletcher) - I thought I would have some better results in torping capital ships. And while that is true, I am still unsure if it is truly the best way to go, since you often need to know where red dd is, e.g. to finish him off. I've not been playing a lot of DDs lately, exacerbated by the radar influx, except for PA dds, to definitely make up my opinion. On Kagero though, which sees t10 so often, I would still recommend it, because the DDs it wants to avoid, are so bloody dangerous to her. But as you say, or at least imply, in the end it's up to personal preference.

Yes, you are a spotting boat in the first place. So important: learn the detection ranges of the DDs you can meet, so you know how agressive you can scout. Always have an escape plan. Reverse into caps and keep reversing to spot red dds. Don't go off alone unless decent reasons. Torp reload booster is a valid alternative to smoke, maybe even more so in these radarmaggedon times. RPF more than recommended. It is a very good boat, so is the akatsuki. Imho after the kagero that ends.

I don't know how the grind on the mahan was, but I guess the torps aren't that much, so they could be freexp'd. Regarding the captain, sorry, but by tier 7 any ship should have (at least) 10 points. Another option for the torps, if you don't want/can't freexp them ,would be playing coop until then, or just play more like a farragut, i.e. more dependent upon "smoke+pew pew", and surprise attacks with the torps. Really don't understand the point about the 10pt captain though. I guess you're not talking about yourself specifically, but are speaking for some part of the playerbase? How would someone not have 10 points by then? I can't even recall once seeing a non CE mahan. (I do recall t4rds (yes, PLURAL) who drive non-CE shima's for some reason)

Question, but attention: tinfoil hat territory I have seen so many tX games where the only t8 ship is a carrier, sometimes also the obligatory sucker in smt like a mogami of course. Same for t6 carriers in t8 games. Do you think there is special mm for cvs? There seem to be, imho, not enough carriers in queue that explain that amount of uptiering. Or is there smt I'm missing?

Wut? Apart from the mogami/ibuki, amagi/izumo, bismarck/freddy I don't immediately see any other good examples. In general t9 is vastly better suited for facing tX. Regarding OP: I just "finished" the richelieu, where matchmaking dropped me in tX almost constantly, where is almost useless. With the handful of Alsace games I had until now, I've been top tier about half of the time. I've noticed the same with other tier 9s. (recently with Iowa & donskoi) Yes you'll face tX most of the time, but I was surprised by the number of games being top tier. I have the feeling WG wants to make the t7's as painful as any other t8-x.

Mahan with CE + camo gives you 6.9 detection range. Granted, that's really bad but on par with a lot of other t7's. Maass has 6.7 (unless mistaken, wiki is down), even Akatsuki only has 6.4. Torp range is 9.2. If you find 2.3km stealth window "negligible" then you should try stealth torping with the tashibana I think Mahan is a quite decent torpboat, also given that special 2 side torp setup. Being uptiered indeed is extremely painful, even more so, as with every other uptiered ship, if your top tier counterparts are braindead, because your main purpose is supporting them. And it is my impression that tier 7 mm isn't that golden anymore as it was a while ago. I find it more problematic (also for the other DDs I mentioned) that WG is powercreeping the f* out of detection values for DDs at those tiers. It started with the gadja and the british t6 premium, who both are around 6. AFAIK the other new ones (haida and the other british one - as I said, wiki is down ) are even better than that. Those are values better than some tier 8+ DDs with concealment expert AND the module. Guess this is as fine as any moment to ask @MrConway if he can say something about the possibility of changes to oldies like the mahan who are or soon will be totally obsolete.

This. The most enjoyment I had of the boat was when hitting some sneaky torps. Preferably when they just extinguished some fires of course. Otherwise it is a bad bad boat. Sure it has range, but the shell drag at +-15km and beyond is horrible. Armour is a joke, which is a problem in the 5BB meta. I prefer taking 155IFHE mogami in the exact same matchmaking over ibuki. If you are able to, I'd say freexp it.

You misread me I'm afraid, though I understand why. My point wasn't really to say that the ijn dd's after akats are bad as such imho, but I was arguing from his "perspective" (in as far as that's possible), where even akats is bad, then the higher tiers will be bad as well, if not vastly worse given radarmageddon and better other nation DDs there than at t7. And I liked kagero very very much. I sold yugumo though, as for my part, the IJN dds at t9-10 don't have anything to offer that other nations DDs can't do too, but better.
