I tried to play as spaceship, but I always end up in a St. Louis instead?!? Plus I have only 1 ship (the Galaxy) in my port, not 4 as they said in the announcement.

Here too. Actually whats your problem? I tried to play on my laptop, which usually achieves between 10 and 20 fps. Today it was a little less. However, once more than 1 enemy was closer than 10 km, my framerate dropped to 1 picture every 10 to 20 seconds! That's what I call unplayable!
