IMO the big part of the problem is that carriers are much easier to hit than BB's, BB's much easier to hit than cruisers, and cruisers still easier to hit than DD's.

And if.. miraculously, they don't happen to find a suitable island from the about 1,000 or so on every map some of them will still have a smoke cloud giving them an imaginary island where to park themselves and spam for 2 mins flat.

Ranked for me is mostly ruined not by rental ships but by dastardly radar cruisers players who think it's fun idea to sneak behind a rock near the cap and flash their radar when my DD is caught unsupported and about 5 enemy ships open fire. FYI 'dastardly' is not misspelled.
