Option is the key word. Someone is always going lose out when changes are made, but having an option would go a long word mitigating any harm done. Take note that we got three 'Pan' trees with several nations in them, and if WG is going to detach some of those nations and form new national trees later on, we are going to witness more of the same griping and bellyaching for sure.That's why I think they should have gone a little longer in terms of giving us 'freedom of choice' in the matter. Given choice, I'd have wanted to transfer both Friesland and Clemens to the Dutch navy tree where they belong IMO. I don't have a special attachment to the Friesland, so I may consider swapping for Groningen or not, I'll have to decide later on. That would still leave my Dutch captain as the odd one out, though.... O Captain! My Captain!

Yeah, I said it wouldn't be an unfair advantage, of course it gives you some advantage the same as a 21 pt would give in any case. The thing is, if I had a 21 pt captain who stayed with the Pan-European tree, and if they were to later add cruisers there, the same advantage would pop up anyway, so it is all relative. You can't get a 21 pt captain unless you put the effort (or xp) into it. The advantage remains the same. It would not be any more game breaking if the Dutch captains could be transferred to the Dutch nation, IMHO. I still don't know why WG chose not to at least give us an option to transfer the Dutch captains.

Uhm.. if the captain were transferred... I would have had to grind the 21 pts on the Pan-European tree... I don't see how having done the same thing earlier could be an unfair advantage. It's not like it would give anyone a free 21 pt captain.

I think it has more to do with the fact people presumed the Dutch commanders would join the Dutch nation once it's launched. That, to me at least, seems like a logical presumption and I rather think WG should have clearly stated if the contrary was to apply in this case.

That is probably the chief concern for me if I choose to keep Friesland myself. (And the Dutch ensign too, of course.) From that point of view, if you want to collect all Dutch ships, the logical step is to keep Friesland and buy the Groningen when it becomes available. This makes sense if you want to have two ships you got to pay for two ships.

I'm not European... nor am I Dutch... (though, of course I have those distant cousins there too!)... Still, I don't like this change, though it currently seems that I will keep the Friesland on attached service to the Pan-European tree... as long as I get to fly the Dutch ensign on it.

We don't actually know. Though, it seems WG may release some new (Swedish) DD's for the Pan-European line at some point.

The latest rumour is they are trying to come up with Red China super carriers, but they need XL size napkins which are still on back order for the Lesta Cafeteria.

I have several distant cousins who were U-boat commanders... maybe I should look into this.

Little reason, but as you've no doubt noticed, every new premium ship now comes with the nerf warning. If this is the case with the Groningen as well, it immediately becomes a far less attractive replacement for the Friesland.

Dutch voiceover, Dutch uniform and skills picked for the Friesland partly incompatible with any remaining Pan-European DD's... Bummer.. but at least now I know. Yeah... now the dilemma is whether to keep Friesland and the captain trained for it or to split them up...

Well, I have a 15 pt Dutch commander on the Friesland. I may have preferred to have him on the Dutch ships. Also, IIRC we sometimes get those missions which are nation specific. I grant you, these may seem like minor points, but they are enough to cause me discomfort. Very interresting... Do you happen to know what will happen to poor old Clemens?

I am comparing the situation to the Rudy in WoT. They gave a free BIA Polish crew, but untrained. We don't have any BIA in WoWS, but they might have given a free 3 or even 10 pt captain thrown into the bargain. It's unclear to me who is winning or losing in this case (except for WG it's a win-win guaranteed). My gut feeling is that the initial solution of transferring Friesland and the captain to the Dutch tree would have been the best, unsure what kind of feedback they've been getting and who from. It is unclear to me what will happen to the Dutch captain I received with my Friesland. I rather think many have kept the Dutch commander on the Friesland, while some may have trained a 19pt Swedish captain as well. From my stand point, at least, transferring the ship along with the commander to the Dutch tree would have been a far better solution than what we are now getting, a very counter-intuitive solution in my book. Any problems with a non-Dutch captain having been trained especially for the Friesland might have been easily solved by a free option to reset the captain skills.

There is no perfect solution I think. But as @Yedwy pointed out, there is a mechanism in the game allowing select captains to sail ships belonging to two different nations (tech trees, effectively). IMHO the most customer friendly approach would be to do what WoT did with the Soviet/Polish Rudy. Failing that, another customer friendly move would be to clone the ship and the captain, or at least allow players to make a permanent choice under which tech tree they want to keep the Friesland and her captain, even though it would mean extra work at your end. You could still offer additional ships later on for both the Pan-European and the new upcoming Dutch tech tree.

They could have even chosen to go further, if you think it's a Pan-European tech tree. They could have created each of the individual navies such as the Dutch or the Swedish navy to operate within the Pan-European tree, not separate from each other.
