Nostalgia for the good old days!

I can still achieve that. -
Dear Wargaming. Please nerf smokescreen.

Using the spotter plane, at least for me, makes the aiming a little more difficult which is why I maky use of it only very rarely. Mostly against stationary targets and such. -

@Karkong_the_Impaler and @Montrala thanks for the interesting videos. I'll try to see if I can do something along these lines. I'm not quite as apt with aiming as they are, though. In fact... I can't even try to aim in the similar fashion because I need to see the numbers, angles etc. to try to figure where to aim. It's... complicated, in other words, and a bit slow as well most of the time. I'm aware of the minimap circle trick, but I can't get it to work reliably because it keeps bounding back and forth. Also, I can't focus on both the binocular crosshair/aim and the minimap at the same time. Just not.. workable. -

Thanks. Looks.. enticing.. I think I'll have a look a little later on.. -

Thanks for the tip, it never occurred to me to use the spotter plane that way. -
Perfectly logical, because this player can't understand why there is 'land' in the midst of a naval engagement.

Okay, cheers, so I got it the exact other way round. Does that make me half wrong or half right?.... I think it makes me half right. -

Okay.. it's just that I seem to remember some old info about gun flares being randomized in smoke, whereas AA fire was not or something. -

It's still a problem, well... at least for me in a BB it is. I know you can shoot at the approximate position in the smoke, but a BB with a long reload is at a definite disadvantage to an HE spammer. Correct me if I'm wrong, BTW, but aren't the gun flares in the smoke randomized? -

Memories may be golden, but mine often flash back to those early times. You can't teach on old dog new tricks, they say, and I learned to play this game back then (not that I'm saying I learned to play it well, mind you...) and have stuck to what I learned.. for the most part at least, I think. Since then, I've learned to press shift + F12 a lot more often.... -
天皇陛下万歳 Uhm... we could, of course, have it patterned after the North Atlantic/Mediterranean convoy action....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_D_escort_ship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaibōkan I'm sure all SS veterans like me.. er... ... let me rephrase that.. all Silent Service veterans recognize that name.
-
Uhm... perhaps that should be 'grayed out' while in ASW mode... Still. Something along the lines I suggested would allow for the DD's to engage the subs in the randoms without undue penalty under enemy fire. Because, realistically speaking (I know I know), I'm not aware of ASW taking place while under enemy fire, or even in contact with the enemy forces apart from the subs.
-
Yeah... that did occur to me too, it's open to exploit so it would need an added layer of complexity. Maybe like this... The complex solution: Restrict the gameplay by introducting an ASW combat mode for the DD's by the key press which activates the depth charges. ASW mode can only be activated when there is an active ASDIC detection. While in an ASW mode, no surface ships or aircraft can damage the DD; conversely, the DD cannot engage or damage any enemy surface ships or aircraft either. Returning to normal game play will occur when either the guns or the torpedos are activated, or, automatically, in case the ASDIC contact is lost.

Could you explain to me, why the smoke was less of an issue originally (open Beta and thereabouts) as opposed to now? At least that is the way I'm experiencing it. WG seems to have gotten the whole concept of how to use smoke wrong if you are asking me.... -

Hear hear! -
Well.. WG does not get what is the appeal of games featuring subs. It's the hunt, the stealth, the process of outwitting the enemy, whichever part you are playing in it.
-
Copy that. Code received and confirmed.
-
IMHO, there's just exactly two solutions to the sub problem. 1. The simple solution: Limit the subs to Convoy mode/Convoy operations. 2. The complex solution: Restrict the gameplay by introducting an ASW combat mode for the DD's by the key press which activates the depth charges. While in an ASW mode, no surface ships or aircraft can damage the DD; conversely, the DD cannot engage or damage any enemy surface ships or aircraft either. Returning to normal game play will occur when either the guns or the torpedos are activated.
-
But that would the DD's effective against the subs. A big no no.

Not everyone can be like the Admiral.

For some reason the graphics style here reminded me a bit of this: ... which.. probably nobody remembers... -
