New Event - Arpeggio of Blue Steel -ARS NOVA- invading World of Warships!
OldGrandad replied to Kurbain's topic in General Discussion
This. Not my cup of tea but then again I drink coffee! But, all to their own. I am glad that this makes a part of the community happy (or happier) so with that in mind can only be a positive. As Tuccy already said, bottom line is that this is a game leaning towards some historical accuracies. We have already had one fun event (I discount Halloween as that was too rushed for us) with the Space Ships that I thoroughly enjoyed. If this is the start of a parallel mode of game play I would support it. Tashkent water-skiing contest anybody? -
Most handsome and most ugly ship in the game
OldGrandad replied to Admiral_H_Nelson's topic in General Discussion
Pretty? Love the RUS DD's from the Gnevny upwards and have a soft spot for the little Orlan. For some bizarre reason I started to imagine her stripped of her weapons, and with that low freeboard at the rear made into a sun deck with small pool, hot beach babes...... sorry I was digressing a bit Ugly? The Impugly Nik I - A punch drunk heavyweight boxer that has taken one punch too many to its face -
I can empathise. In one of my very few battles in the Udaloy in division with another Udaloy we were up against a division of 3 Shimmys. DD's - aim assist, really sherlock? You do know that the torpedo assist is actually an official assist? You are indeed an underwhelming player so before painting others with your belief they are indeed assisted by aliens, try to understand (I will not say learn to play) the basics, hone your skills and become the player that you currently despise - a good one.

You quote maximum damage when it should 'possible' maximum damage. Reality dictates that all ammunition whether it be shell or torpedo (or seagull eggs for that!) never do maximum damage and what you describe as 'one torp hit detonation of a BB' is just that, a detonation, it can happen equally with a shell. If you think DD's can dominate BB's you are playing them wrong, trust me I know. As soon as a BB starts to sail away from me in a DD the chase is off, a good BB captain knows when to get out of trouble. I note the only DD experience you have is with the Gremmy which is known to be more than a capable DD. I challenge you to try the RUS DD's and 'dominate' a BB with 3-4km ranged torps! I just am at the Udaloy now, and I can tell you unless a BB hands itself on a plate to me I will steer clear of those bad boys!

Previous to the patch that brought us XP rewards for capturing caps, DD's were pretty much the lower class due to limited damage potential (except for the most able DD captains). Yes, they could capture those same old caps but for no reward, so many a time in order to gain decent XP, they would go off on a CV or BB hunt. Now, they are now a more important class when it comes to capping as the rewards are there to ensure they do so first before off on a big ship hunt. Yes, I have seen many battles where there were similar amounts of DD's but they cancel themselves out most of the time trying to dominate said caps. On the other hand, I have been in a division of 3 DD's and we have faced only 1 enemy DD so it is more of a lottery as to how many DD's may appear in any one battle. Would be interested to know at what tier you were playing when you noticed that as at tiers 7/8/9 I have not seen that many. Of course, they (WG) could limit DD's to a max of 5 per team for a start and see what effect it has from there?

1900+ games played, time for self criticism
OldGrandad replied to Takru's topic in Newcomers' Section
Although a preferred cruiser captain I found that the RUS DD's fitted my play style. Anyway, Long story cut short I am not at the Udaloy (just) and was concerned about the lack of damage that the HE did so I did a long drawn out test for shell damage on ships of the same tier. And yes, in most areas, HE damage was ok (with the help of fires) but for continued damage, AP was the shell of choice. Of course cruisers now became your preferred target as you can imagine DD's AP shell damage on BB's was minimal at best. Again, it all depends on your target but I suggest when approaching a CA try some AP love, it may surprise you! -
Stab in the dark, delete preferences.xml and restart the game. It only holds minimal info and if you enabled replays you will have to do so over again.
-
I have already noted that the effective damage of the RUS DD's (in this case talking about Tashkent/Udaloy) HE is poor at best. Did a long standing test which surprised me, but this is the wrong thread for this. Indeed. The missing funnel smoke was always an issue when zooming in on an enemy and trying to guess speed, and sometimes direction in order to accurately aim!

When in my Colorado I am accused of deliberately missing - oh RNG I do hate you...... Back to the OP, those sort of accusations have been around in the game from day 1, when the doors were opened to all (open beta). Aiming assist modules (Mk.1 eyeballs are one type ) have been around long before this game got off the ground.

Guys, please read his nick - JD & Red Bull - far too much consumed in an evening sends him temporarily insane

Got my Nagato a little while ago but put her on the back burner whilst I ground both the German and Russian lines. Went back to her yesterday and had a great battle in her, forgot what the power and accuracy (after bemoaning the Colorado's like for 'spraying' the enemy) was like and had an awesome battle. 4 kills and I cleared 300k credits. I cannot understand you as you have many battles in a Colorado so you must know how to play BB's at that level. Are you losing credits in that too? As for Co-op, unless you have a game of champions you will hardly make any sort of decent XP or credits there.

Guys, I am sorry if I offended anyone but I was trying to make a point regarding a possible reason why some players may leave/have left. I have mentioned 'we' as, because I like the game, I would do my bit to try to look at the positives rather than focus on the negatives, and promote the game instead of flaming it for its flaws. There are too many positives for me to let the negatives cloud my judgement, and yes, I do agree with those that oppose bundle only offers and the lack of equality (read balanced offers etc) over the regions. I would if needed put my name against the need to offer vanilla content alongside their currently preferred bundle offers, but what is more important is advertising as that is sorely lacking.
-
No, it was not the only reason just one I highlighted as it is the same issue for the other 2 WG games. Problem is, there are those here that are too blinkered to even remotely think of any other reason to argue their point. As for queue times for tiers 8 to 10, what time were you playing out of interest as I played many during both weekend afternoon/evenings and the wait time was minimal at worst. I will leave it there as there is just too much hate here.

I have noted that there are a few protagonists complaining about the decline in players yet they may be part of that decline. Losing players is not just about losing experienced players but also about trying to keep new players attention and their liking of the game. We all remember starting off and how we progressed, and for me being at the start it was pretty much equal footing for all. Now, with Beta players having been here nearly all year and Open Beta players here for a few months less they (and many others of course) have accrued much experience. The point I am making is that there are a few players that play a large percentage of their battles entrenched in tiers 2 and 3 yet those tiers are the new players learning ground. I will say the words, 'seal clubbing'. Not a phrase I like to use, but it is probably best used to describe when a seasoned player goes into a low tier battle to dominate, knowing that many players there will be of low or little experience. I will, without naming the player, point out that they have played over 20% of their 1200+ battles in the tier 2 Umikaze racking up over 400 kills. How many of those kills were players of little or no experience? Ok, not that players fault as there is no protection in place for new players, but I would put a firm bet that we lose a lot of upcoming new players simply because of experienced players dominating (some of) the battles. Before we start blaming other failings (that Mr.Fingers has pointed out many times), some need to look at their own behaviour and ask themselves whether that could in deed be partly to blame? As for the facts themselves I noted that a Friday evening in late August had a player count of 24k, yet the Friday just gone, whilst less was still 20k, that to me does not come to a 50% loss of active players as it is active players we must be concerned with here. The OP must have his own verified statistics that come up with a 50% loss of players but you cannot take the opening day to compare but a day where the activity is starting to flat-line. Below is a graph showing population (courtesy of vBAddict) Decline? Yes, 50%? No. Ok. Going forward we still need to voice our concerns on how to keep our experience players (bundle free offers, equitable treatment to other server communities etc). But also, we need to ensure we maintain new players interest as that is where we need to grow as well. Suggestions?

To date only finished 6 battles in Ranked, finished top in 5 out of the 6. But, it went - win, lose, lose, lose, win, win. Finally got to Rank 14 and as my friends will know, I was so fed up putting in hard work only for (some of) the rest falling way too short to have been of much use I nearly quit trying! Been using the Fujin and it is proving to be quite the DD killer so far (ok, some luck there) and fun to use. Will continue to use her up to Rank 10 if I can make it there with my sanity intact!

immediately joining ranked games with tirpitz must be blocked
OldGrandad replied to Thunderfunk's topic in General Discussion
New Musical Express was the only thing I could come up with...... Looking at the OP's stats I would put a bet on the fact he got owned by a Tirpitz whilst sailing his Amagi. To OP, that was tongue in cheek and should be taken that way, you get the picture.... -
Regarding Ranked Battles from an 'ok' players perspective
OldGrandad posted a topic in General Discussion
Guys, firstly forget the words that lie underneath my avatar, they mean nothing when I am giving my opinion/feelings here. In the first season I rose to the heady height of Rank 22 but soon got agitated and frustrated by having the same skilled players in Ranked as Random (read into that as you will). I had hoped it would be the 'hard core' players, like you guys that frequent the forums, but no. I had been spoilt testing Ranked on the Super Test server, where players were like minded and similarly skilled and had hoped that would have spilt over into the main server. Alas no. Ok, Season 2 of Ranked Battles soon sprung upon us and I thought? Ok, let's try again. First battle was hard, and I mean both teams fought tooth and nail to win and having taken 2 kills in my Fujin our win tasted fine. Second battle was the polar opposite, I had to be overly aggressive in the Fujin, took 2 kills again but this time my team were weaker than a 3 day old lettuce leaf. So, so far, one step forward and now one step back, time for a days breather...... Day 2. Fresh from a victory in Random I thought, ok, lets take the little Fujin back out again, got my lucky clover, kicked a black cat (ooh, was I meant to do that for luck?) and entered Ranked Battles for another go. Within a few minutes had earned 'First Blood' and a 'Devastating Strike'), great start after getting the first cap. Ah, we lose a ship, then another, then another, hmm, blood boils and with that I manage another kill and a Devastating Strike. But, we then proceed to lose all our ships and muggins is solo against a Mutsuki, Gremmy and New York. Bottom line is got into a fist fight with the Mutsuki and torped him but alas, being mortally wounded I was easy pickings. Bottom line to this story, how many others are doing the one step forward and two steps back? From one frustrated and slightly bemused apprentice Ranked Battle player -
New Aim Mod (No, realy, this one is new)
OldGrandad replied to Wischmob_von_Eimer's topic in Archive
Ok, first thing, I am not abusing my title by stating what may not be obvious to some. There is no need to make 'official statements until something concrete has been achieved - a fix. All I am saying is to use a little imagination here, developers are made aware of an issue that is being heavily complained about and is affecting morale. Would they ignore it? Of course not. The fact nothing has been said does not mean they are not aware and are in working on it. Your last statement in stating that giving the link out, is in fact detrimental, as it will give a wider audience an opportunity to use it. -
Should have left General as it was, it was just like walking into the pub and chatting about anything. Now, it feels like you have to go into a dedicated room to have just specific conversations, poor decision.

New Aim Mod (No, realy, this one is new)
OldGrandad replied to Wischmob_von_Eimer's topic in Archive
The powers that be are fully aware of the mod in question so please tell me why, 'warning' fellow gamers that it exists? It will not help whatsoever will it? Putting a link up was the most idiotic thing that could have been done as it would aid those that want to 'cheat' and had not known about it before, understand? You speak as though WG are not aware about it but they are so let them work on a 'fix' and not keep shouting about it. -
I need to format my Gaming Laptop, will i lose everything in the game
OldGrandad replied to sye_lee's topic in General Discussion
Also, apart from the preferences.xml file, if you have replays (if enabled) and screenshots that you want to keep ensure you back those up as well. -
noobs read, im sick of loosing games couse you suck
OldGrandad replied to TomaszuJerzy's topic in General Discussion
I agree partially with your frustration with others coining the word 'noob' when addressing certain players, but I also can understand why they do. It all boils down to the type of game this is - a team game. Most of the frustration you describe happens the further up the tiers you get, where it appears some players have not grasped the fundamentals of how to win a battle. Yes, 'noob sayers' are wrong to continually to bring up stats, but as you well know they are an indication of a players ability, so I would suggest a little more coaching than criticism is needed. But on the flip side some players take umbrage at coaching suggestions and state 'they want to play the game their way'. This is where the issue lies, players who really should know 'the ropes' but don't, frustrate the more seasoned players. As I quoted earlier, this being a team game, seasoned players get annoyed with players who do not carry their weight in a battle, meaning other players in that team have to do more to make up for the 'noobs' lack of effort/skill. The bottom line is, being a team game there will always be those that get frustrated with lesser skilled players, it is part of the competitive nature of the game and we have to live with it. -
Torpedoes have a damage limit, that does not mean they do that maximum damage, it could in certain circumstances only do 25% of its maximum damage.

This. I never lose credits so no need to exchange. More effort more cash!
