I'm a historian, with a broad interest in history in general, but in military history and military equipment in particular, and especially battleships and battlecruisers. War is bad, but one of the most significant events, and therefore worthy of study. We must never glorify war, or lose sight of the horrible consequences. Every life matters, war should be avoided if at all possible. But if we don't study war, and learn from our mistakes, how can we avoid making those same mistakes again?

Ever since I came across a picture in an old magazine, of USS Wisconsin being modernized in the 1980's, I've been fascinated by battleships and battlecruisers. Aside from aircraft carriers, they are the biggest weapons ever developed. Crewed by hundreds of men, capable of firing tons of ordnance in one broadside and engaging enemies over huge distances, they were once the epitome of naval power, but are now relegated to the annals of military history.

The Royal Navy is of particular interest to me. Once the mightiest fleet in the world, they are now much reduced in size. But at their peak in World War Two, they fought in every theater of the war. The Repulse class, HMS Hood, King George V class, Lion class and HMS Vanguard are some of my favorite warships ever. I am eagerly anticipating their inclusion in this game. Sadly, none of them were preserved, but HMS Belfast, which I've visited twice now, gives a sense of the huge scale of these ships. A few of their contemporaries have survived, mostly in the US. One pre-dreadnought, Mikasa, is also still in existence, and the Kure Maritime Museum in Japan, is devoted one to the IJN's ultimate battleships: Yamato.
