Finally got my hands on Subs and played pretty much the whole of yesterday, while I enjoyed it and will continue to do so, there are a couple of things I feel I should mention. Hopefully this will be somewhat constructive. Positives first. The Subs themselves, look fantastic. Sound great and are generally very pleasing. Art dept knocked it out of the park. The dive klaxon as the ships horn is a beautiful touch, as is the active ping while submerged instead of the klaxon. (Could you maybe make them sit a bit higher in the dry-dock port so I can get a real good look all around the vessel?) Not necessarily negatives, but could do with being looked at. -Sonar pinging a target whilst submerged is way more difficult than I anticipated. Surfaced is fine as you have a degree of visual feedback on where that ping is going, be it ahead or behind a target, allowing follow-up pings to be more precise. Submerged, you don't get this visual feedback, making a firing solution on target a battle in itself and you can waste a VAST amount of time just trying to ping a faster ship which will see opportunities for good plays to slip by you. -Acoustic homing torpedoes. Had issues with the torps homing either not activating at all when an enemy ship is pinged, or activating for a couple of seconds and then deactivating again. Might just be me being a dumbass, but I dunno. -Sub starting position. Every game I played I was started dead center of my team in the middle of the map. This makes positioning in time to cover a flank or exploit a gap in the enemy (what subs should be doing imo) almost impossible. Maybe have the Subs start in the same line as cruisers to allow Subs to have more choice in where to go at the start of the game instead of straight forward into a choke point and suicidal enemy DDs. -Submerging mechanic feels clunky. Not sure if that's just me or if it's by design. It's not bad, but it just feels off somewhat. -ASW seems incredibly strong overall. Depth charges hurt, but in the same vein, they also seem inconsistent. Not to mention their aoe is humongous! I've managed my fair share of jammy escapes from DDs who are hell-bent on taking me down. But there are some boats you simply cannot escape from, regardless of what you do to counter it. Short of emergency surfacing and blatting him with aft torps, you're pretty much guaranteed to get sunk. It's all of nothing sometimes, some ships can pass right over you and never see you, but other ships will spot you from miles away and keep you spotted forever and ever. After playing DD ASW earlier on last week, destroying subs is far too easy. I may draw some flak from that statement, but I stand by it. Subs are easy to kill, it's fact, sorry. -Sub to sub knife fights. Little bit cumbersome, because of how unwieldy subs are while submerged. Just like actual subs, it hinges on who seems who first a lot of the time. And if you're not positioned to be able to deal with an enemy sub, you're dead. -Bots. These guys just go forward and die, changing the dynamic of the game within the first few mins for the worse and making the games very short. So short in fact I sometimes haven't even got more than one attack off. I think Wargaming would get better data back from all player games. But I understand why Subs are in their own mode. As they stand, Subs seem a little under-powered. Not by a huge margin, but the right tweaks will bring them up to code. That's all I have for now, but I'm gonna play some more and I'll update this post with anything else I discover.

Regrettably I haven't played Subs yet, but I have been playing ASW for the past couple of days. From what I can tell, people are using subs wrong. A huge portion of sub captains will do the DD thing and charge straight down the middle of the map or right into a choke point and get immediately stomped. Either that or finding their way into the middle of the enemy team, directly underneath them. These captains aren't taking range, better spotting, positioning or patience into account, nor are they re-positioning post attack. They're dumping one set of torps and then continue forward, get spotted and then deded. I see very little usage of sonar pings, to me it seems like people are scared to use it due to them being marked by it. Barely any of them travel on the surface to make use of their speed to do said re-position. Which means you can be caught by just about anything and swarmed by ASW ships. As for AWS players, the one thing I have noticed is that they will immediately charge down a sub if they see it. Baiting themselves into the open and out of position to be swatted by the enemy surface ships. It's completely unnecessary because Subs at the moment are total lemmings disregarding their stealthy application and throwing themselves at you just begging to be depth charged. As they stand Subs are receiving a lot of unjustified hate, which is crazy to me as both; A: Subs in general seem under-powered and B: People do not have a clue how to use them effectively yet. IMO, at the moment Subs are easy to counter and out-play. Unless you're a BB, in which case get a friend and have one person run exclusive ASW for the BB, which has been a VERY effective strat for me and my friend over the past couple of days. That being said, I think Subs have huge potential. So drink it in now, Sub dislikers and blow as many up as you can. Because give it a little while and some updates a few really good Sub captains will distinguish themselves and they're going to make your life a complete misery lol. i might even be one of them...

Submarine Battles: Free Submarine Rentals

Been waiting a long time to have a bash at PvP subs and now they're finally here. Albeit temporarily, but still, they're here! They just gotta go through a more extensive and wider test in their own game mode so it doesn't upset random battles and then after that who knows? What an exciting time to be alive! Edit: What a terrible idea to have Subs awarded randomly over a period of days. Some of us have already had to wait actual years for this, whhhhyyyy draw it out even more. -

Personally, I am massively looking forward to Subs (hopefully) making an appearance into random battles. As a sub enthusiast, I think it will offer a nice difference of approach to random battles that they need right now. Breaking up the island camping meta that is horrendously apparent in 90% of games, which drag games out to an appalling length sometimes, would be an absolute god-send. The threat of an SS lurking near-by will cause people to think about sitting static behind islands. In a similar vein, it should also encourage CVs from doing the same and making players focus just as heavily on moving with a group instead of hiding in the corner of the map or behind an island. May also give DDs a secondary job apart from rushing the first cap and immediately getting sunk allowing your team access to map info for significantly longer than usual and defense against beligerant subs. However, that being said, if Subs only appear as something you cannot use in random battles, only PVE, I will be bitterly disapointed. Regardless, I am optimistic.
