    Mikasa/Pre-Dreadnought Appreciation Fleet

What we see in this picture, is the French battleship Masséna, floating upside down. The cylinders protruding from the sponsoons are actually submerged torpedo tubes, that could be aimed independently of one another. Unfortunately, firing them all together had a tendency to capsize the ship. On a slightly more serious note: This is one grand old vaisseau de guerre! I love this picture! Don't you think we could persuade Wargaming to include her in the game? I don't really care what stats they give her, as long as she keeps her looks!

    German and Japanese ports?

The Grosser Kurfürst is currently busy, as it is, in fact, the town of Himmelsdorf from WoT that has put to sea. I know this, because it was in that Jingles video.

    German and Japanese ports?

A capital idea! My Tirpitz would cut an excellent figure against the serene beauty of the Alta Fjord! And then we could have the French port of Mers-el-Kébir, with the beached wreck of the Dunkerque, to make her feel properly appreciated as well...! The London port looks great, by the way!

    That's true!

    German and Japanese ports?

No, it's real. It's pretty, but I don't use it much since it gives me a sort of LSD-kind of feeling. And the ship camos come out with a weird lustre to their colours. Oh, and I guess the Yokosuka port is technically Japanese, although it will allegedly be closed down at the end of the year.
  7. There was some thought of equipping aeroplane pilots as well with parachutes during World War 1, at least in Britain. But the powers that be - General Command or the guys in Whitehall, I'm not entirely sure which ones - decided that the option to bail out, such as it was, could "promote and encourage cowardice in the face of the enemy". The thinking was, that pilots might be tempted to jump as soon as an enemy attacked, rather than try to fight it out for the glory of King and Country. I think this says a lot about the lack of contact with the realities of war, among the decision-makers of the time. Some guy among the top brass actually suggested that parachutes should be introduced at an experimental aerodrome of choice, to try it out. But others felt that if this was implemented as a success, and actually saved lives, and the parachutes were then removed, it might provoke feelings of discontent among the rank and file. So I guess there was at least that much contact with reality. Anyway, no parachutes for our magnificent men in their flying machines! Later on, after the war, someone did the math, and realized just how much more expensive it was to educate new pilots than to build new planes...

Well, that's good, then. "Playing normally" is how I usually go about completing my missions. Thanks for the informative reply!

And then he edited his post again, and now it looks at least slightly different. Thanks for keeping tabs. I'll leave it up to more focussed forumites than I to adjust the following posts accordingly.

To be honest, I feel pretty much the same about the Yorck. Although she doesn't stand out all that much from the other German cruisers in this respect, from my point of view (I haven't played very many of them). I am generally not overly worried about a German cruiser, unless it is played aggressively and skilfully enough to get that combination of accurate guns and swift torpedoes to work. When that happens, it can be deadly! Edited: I'm sure I did. Thanks for pointing it out. I guess I'm a little slow in the uptake today, for one reason or another.

I like the variety she represents in relations to the lovely Scharnhorst - the same great build, but bringing an altogether different set of guns to the table. And variety is good for the game!Scharnhorst: 31Hiryu (2/2/2): 17 Hiryu (3/1/2) : 20Ranger (1/1/1): 8 Ranger (0/1/3): 22 Saipan (Torpedo Bombers): 22Saipan (Dive Bombers): 17
  12. I've actually found the German battleships on tier III-V to be uniformly well-rounded when it comes to armour vs. speed. They are faster than the US Navy battleships but slower than the Imperial Japanese Navy battleships of those tiers, and they can take more damage than both of the others (a lot more damage, compared to the IJN ships). And they also have comparatively good AA. All in all I find them to offer very comfortable gameplay! But I agree that the Graf Spee will not likely offer these advantages. It will be interesting to see how it performs.

south dakota-class Battleship alabama is coming

So it seems - but why the long face? It's not like they are planning to do away with the old paint job. (?) At a first glance, I can't say that I fancy the new pattern overmuch. Is it supposed to have the same set of bonuses as the old one?

  16. These are all valid considerations. And I agree that quite a lot is likely to depend on the accuracy and penetration of Graf Spee's guns - it will be interesting to see how they will balance this ship!
  17. A cruiser isn't automatically underpowered, just by not being able to take on a same-tiered battleship one on one with even chances. If the Dunkerque has an edge over the Graf Spee in this game, in a hypothetical one-on-one showdown, I think that would reflect well on the balance between them. And please note that "having the edge" is not the same thing as being guaranteed a win!
  18. You forgot the surrender of Singapore in 1942... oh, sorry - that was not a French surrender. I guess it doesn't count? But wait, the French were involved in a surrender at Austerlitz in 1805... although, sadly, it was the Austrians and the Russians who surrendered to them. I guess it doesn't count either? My point is, there is no call for making sweeping and belittling generalizations based on selective information. Few, if any, nations, have ever had a history of nothing but victories, or nothing but defeats. And the idea that a surrender is always shameful, is wrong in itself. Going back to the subject of this post (sort of), the captain of the Admiral Graf Spee - Hans Langsdorff - chose to scuttle his ship, rather than sacrificing the lives of his men in what he (incorrectly) believed to be a hopeless battle against vastly superior forces. In my opinion, that was an act of outstanding moral courage, although his superiors in Berlin at the time were unlikely to have shared that sentiment.
  19. Too bad you can't share this "surrender theory" with Napoleon and his generals, or with all those French soldiers who fought through the First World War. They, and their opponents, might have ventured a different opinion.
  20. I wonder if we will se some armed merchantmen - auxiliary cruisers, I do believe I've heard them called? - in WoWs?

A very fast and nimble destroyer, carrying seven (7!) great guns with long range stealth fire and close range knife-fighting capability. Able to stealth torp in a pinch. Good stats overall. Always a blast to drive; when I'm sailing in her, I am in a happy place. Another bonus is that she's got an interesting service record, especially for a destroyer. 24. One could perhaps argue that making use of numerical superiority is sound strategic thinking, irrespective of whether it is done by pussies, [edited] or arseholes? The Kriegsmarine knew that it could never float enough warships to actually defeat the Royal Navy, but I am fairly certain that the Germans would have used more ships, if they'd had them. As for the French Navy, it never really got the chance to prove itself - the battle for France was decided on land. History aside, my poll is mainly concerned with how the two ships would fare against each other in the game. As I have written above, my money would be on the Dunkerque. Assuming two players of equal skill, that is - and RNG is, as always, the great equalizer.
