Elimination thread 3: Tier VII *Winner!*
Procrastes replied to DDMafiaAssociateMember's topic in General Discussion
You think so? Well, maybe. I guess if the Belfast managed to keep the distance in a prolonged chase, she might eventually burn the Scharnhorst down. But the Scharnhorst is quite a fast ship, and she can heal a lot of whatever HE damage she takes. Any opportunity to corner the Belfast, or otherwise close the distance, and she'd annihilate the cruiser with either her guns or her torpedoes. The Blyskawica, on the other hand, is also a proficient fire-starter, and she's much faster than either of the other two ships. If I were in the Scharnhorst, I think I'd rather face the Belfast, to be honest. However this show would go down, and assuming players of equal skill, I don't really see a "mop the floor-fight" necessarily happening here. (Also, nothing of this is strictly relevant to the outcome of this elimination operation, as I see it. It is a measure of the qualities of the respective ships in the game as a whole, not merely in a hypothetical one-on-one fight. But it's fun to speculate!)- 452 replies

"History falsification" means providing false facts, and claiming them to be the truth. Wargaming does no such thing. They have never claimed that the ship models in this game are true representations of their real-world counterparts.

Blyskawica: 48 Flint: 16 - 3 = 13. Sorry, Flint my boy. Nothing personal; just cleaning up the list. Belfast: 36 Scharnhorst: 47 + 1 = 48. The Swiss Army Ship, and still the most beautiful warship in the game.- 452 replies

I am sure that many of you have noticed that the little Walrus spotter plane on the Perth has a rather odd premium/non-premium configuration? The non-premium spotter plane has a reload of 360 seconds, and is up in the air for 180 seconds. The premium spotter plane has a much shorter reload of 240 seconds, but then it only stays in the air for a 100 seconds. I am wondering, is this a bug that Wargaming can be expected to fix, or is it a feature that is working as intended? Although I must admit that the longer reload time of the non-premium plane is sort of logical - it makes sense that it would take more time filling up all those extra fuel tanks - I would expect both versions to cost the same if they were balanced out like this. If I am to fork over 22 500 credits (or 15 doubloons) for a premium scout plane, I expect it to come with nothing but benefits. Or am I up in the blue, here?

Unpopular opinion: Radio Location is not game breaking, its not even a strong skill
Procrastes replied to kfa's topic in General Discussion
According to several posts I have read so far, it does just that. It's a kind of double-edged sword, in the words of one forumite.- 66 replies

Procrastes replied to kfa's topic in General Discussion
A valid point! This skill will change the gameplay in various ways, and in my opinion for the worse - but as I've stated before, I doubt that it will actually break it. My post has been edited accordingly.- 66 replies

A Blyskawica and a Benson are fairly well matched in their respective main armament. The Blyska has more guns and better shell arcs at medium or longer range, but the Benson fires faster. All else being equal, the advantage will usually go to the one who gets the drop on the other. In a strict one-on-one fight, that means the Benson would probably have the upper hand, on account of its much smaller detection radius. All else not being equal, I would say that the outcome would be decided by individual player skill about four times out of five. Both ships are good at what they do. "Its not the ship, but the captain that commands it...!"

I guess the impact of RL, for the individual destroyer captain, depends almost entirely on individual playstyle. Me, I play gunboat destroyers - and if I spot an enemy destroyer*, I usually go after it. This means that I probably won't feel the RL-induced pain nearly as acutely as, for instance, a Ninja IJN destroyer captain will. But I still feel bad for that IJN destroyer captain - and this skill ruins makes less not only of his game, but of mine as well. What's the fun in trying to outsmart and outplay each other, if there's a game mechanic that makes a fair bit of that hard-earned personal skill and experience redundant? *One that isn't currently backed-up by the entire Russian light cruiser fleet, that is. I occasionally do learn from my mistakes, in spite of being 40+. Edited: RL is, I believe, not a game-breaking skill. So the word "ruins" is a bit too strong, at least for now.- 66 replies

I like those special German-engineered, forward-shooting torpedo tubes! This has prompted me to go as far up the German DD tree as to the V-170 at tier 4. After that one, those tubes seem to vanish from the line? The V-170 is fun enough, I guess - but she can't hold a candle to the American tier 4, the Clemson. Those twin-mounted 103 mm guns on that little beast, and the fact that she can put twelve (12!) torpedoes in the water almost simultaneously - what a ship-killer! The only thing the V-170 can boast of here, is two more kilometres of range, giving her the option to stealth-torp. Which is nice, of course - but if you fire at something that is 7 km off, you probably won't hit anything anyway.

I currently have a 12-point Blyskawica captain. I have gone for this setup: 1. Preventative Maintenance 2. Expert Marksman, Last Stand 3. Demolition Expert 4. Concealment Expert Preventative Maintenance was a no-brainer. As soon as I am spotted, I assume that I am everyone's priority target, which usually pans out. It's nice to sometimes not immediately lose the rudder or the engine, when the first shells drop out of the sky. Expert Marksman, Last Stand: Both of these are fairly mandatory on the Blyskawica, in my opinion. I would probably go for both of them even before advancing to a level 3 skill. Demolition Expert: A somewhat tougher choice. Vigilance was tempting, since I like to get in close and personal when I hunt other destroyers. But in the end, I took the fiery choice, since the ability to set fires is such a large part of what makes Blyska able to take the fight against any opponent. Concealment Expert: I am still vacillating between this and Advanced Firing Training. The ability to comfortably shoot at targets more than 14 km away is, frankly, quite intoxicating - but I get that on my Gremyaschy and Leningrad destroyers. And getting the detection range on my Blyskawica down to "normal" levels has so far proved to make her a much more efficient scout ship - she can now move about the map much more freely. And of course, this has also indirectly made her torpedo armament that much stronger - I can get much closer in a torpedo run, before I start taking heavy fire. All in all, I do believe that CE is the choice that best brings out the versatility in the Blyskawica. But both choices are great.

Best premium for fun, grinding and competitive sport?
Procrastes replied to Pagster123's topic in General Discussion
Please don't apologize for not including the Krasny Krym; it would have just taken up space in the list. But what do you mean by saying, that WG doesn't allow the inclusion of ships below tier 5? If it's a joke, then I'm sorry, but I don't get it! (Also: Where's the Gremyaschy?)- 40 replies

Unpopular opinion: Radio Location is not game breaking, its not even a strong skill
Procrastes replied to kfa's topic in General Discussion
I have so far only put Radio Location on one of my Russian cruiser captains - and that only to try it out. One of theses days I'll most probably change it to Inertia Fuse, or Concealment Expert. Any thoughts on what would be the better choice, here?- 66 replies

Bogatyr new configuration for commander skills
Procrastes replied to Lukewehr's topic in General Discussion
You actually use the 152 mm guns on the Bogatyr? The only reason to do so that I could think of, would be that the 130 mm:s keep bouncing off everything I shoot at - I can't even penetrate a Phoenix cruiser from the side at 10 km range. But that only makes it simpler - I never ever shoot AP in my Bogatyr, these days! -
Bogatyr new configuration for commander skills
Procrastes replied to Lukewehr's topic in General Discussion
I do have a 10-point captain assigned to my Bogatyr, just so that I can use his Advanced Firing Training to rain flaming death on targets too far away to do aught but weep and burn. I also use him on the Imperator Nikolai I, which works out rather well. I had high hopes for the Oleg, obviously - but then it turned out she is fitted with the 152 mm guns instead of the 130 mm. Bummer! -
RPF / RDF / RADIO LOCATION: The Ultimate Petition To The Devs NO : 2
Procrastes replied to DanottiTR's topic in Archive
Might it be the Inertia Fuse at work? I have a feeling it might work well on those Russian cruisers. I like the title of this thread, by the way: Ultimate Petition No 2. It reminds me of such classics as Final Destination 2, or First Blood, Part 2. On a further note: Irrespective of the headline of the opening post, let me state, in no equivocal way, that I do not like like the Radio Location skill. -
Smoke screen expert on British cruisers yes or no?
Procrastes replied to SovietFury43's topic in General Discussion
Well, that figures. I've only gotten to the Fiji so far - and I also have the Belfast. I'm currently undecided as to whether I shall go any higher up the British cruiser tree. I can't reliably carry my weight above tier 8, and I still feel that HE is more fun than improved AP. Which probably means that my Belfast captain will at some time end up as a Belfast-only captain, since those skills that improve fire chance and boosts HE penetration are just too good to pass up. I will simply have to train my Leander captain to a sufficient level, and then promote him to the Fiji. And the improved smoke skill will definitely be the come-back skill on level two for both of them. -

Leningrad:8Blyskawica: 44 + 1 = 45. Versatile, good-looking and always fun.Flint: 21 Belfast: 37Scharnhorst: 45Hiryu (2/2/2): 2 - 3 = 0. Let's clean up the list.Saipan (Torpedo Bombers): 5 While we shall of course follow the Rules of Engagement Elimination, it seems to me that we have three ships in a clear lead. The laurels will probably go to either the Scharnhorst, the Blyskawica or the Belfast.- 452 replies

Unpopular opinion: Radio Location is not game breaking, its not even a strong skill
Procrastes replied to kfa's topic in General Discussion
This is a good and nuanced thread! While Radio Location might not be as game-breaking as many feared, I still feel that it should be removed from the game. It takes away a large part of that challenge which consists of trying to outsmart and outguess your opponent, and it limits the options for tactical play in certain situations. Where's the fun in that?- 66 replies

Smoke screen expert on British cruisers yes or no?
Procrastes replied to SovietFury43's topic in General Discussion
You don't think so? I have Expert Marksman on all my British and Commonwealth cruisers; they have such a painfully slow turret traverse otherwise. But maybe that smoke skill is a better choice? -
I saw her in the shop... ...I bought her... ...and then I saw the 152 mm guns.

Captain Skills Distribution Guide for 0.6.0
Procrastes replied to Kurbain's topic in General Discussion
Good points all, LilJumpa! Thanks! I must admit that when I thought of getting two spotter planes, it was the Perth - with her longer-duration Walrus spotter plane - that was foremost in my mind. The longer the plane is up, the greater risk it will be shot down, so a back-up might come in handy. But I guess Priority Target, or Preventive Maintenance, would be a better choice. It certainly seems to be so for the Budyonny and the Murmansk.- 90 replies

Captain Skills Distribution Guide for 0.6.0
Procrastes replied to Kurbain's topic in General Discussion
Great work, as always, Kurbain! I have a question about the Direction Center for Catapult Aircraft skill: Would it be a good idea to use it on a ship that has a spotter plane? Such as the Perth, or the Budyonny?- 90 replies

There is an automated system in place to handle team damage. It works so that repeated team damage will render the team damager in pink, as well as eventually lead to him taking all the damage and the fired-upon ally taking none. You might want to remove the alleged team damager's player name from your post. Naming and shaming is against p. 2.1.8 in the forum rules. It is not allowed to fire back at a team member that has been marked in pink as a team killer. Doing so will mark you as a team killer as well, and render you the same sanction as your offender. (This is one instance where World of Warships differs from World of Tanks.)
