I have landed some good battleship AP salvoes on destroyers now and then, but not often enough to perceive the kind of trend you are talking about, OP. What I have noted, though, is that with that massive AP alpha, the damage on the destroyer is usually significant irrespective of ammo choice, and the main advantage of HE is that I don't actually have to hit - landing near can be enough to do damage and destroy modules.

Not entirely sure where I'm going with this
Procrastes replied to VeryRisky's topic in General Discussion
Very nice post, OP! And good advice all around. I can't add a whole lot to the previous posts other than this: WoWs is learning by doing. Everything gets easier with practice, even aiming for citadels. And even then, there will just be those days when you can't seem to land a decent hit no matter how many games you play. That's normal, at least for the normal kind of player. For me, the most telling improvement over time is that I am slowly becoming better at reading the game. At present, this is mostly restricted to a better post-battle sense of exactly what I did wrong and what sent me to the bottom - but now and then, I have actually been able to turn a hopeless situation around. So keep at it, Captain! I look forward to seeing you on the sea of battle! -
Ah, the manifold pleasures of smoke... Destroyer smoke is best used to shield allied battleships and cruisers, while continuing to spot for them. Most times this means staying outside of your own smoke, while keeping that itchy trigger-finger off the firing button. This is harder than it probably should be (yes, I am weak that way). Nowadays I always feel sort of cheated when I have to pop smoke merely to get out of an awkward social situation. Cruiser smoke, on the other hand, is mostly a substitute for armour while laying down the fire on those big ol' battleships. I am finally starting to learn not to pop smoke until I am perfectly certain that at least one other allied ship is spotting the enemy fleet. Sitting blind in your own smoke cloud while waiting for the torpedoes to arrive, will get old really fast. (And this is why I do so love my Perth, since I can always send up my little Walrus out of the smoke to spot my enemies for me! Lovely ship!) Battleship smoke is, so far, non existent. Which is probably a good thing. Friendly smoke is tangible proof that someone, somewhere, cares about you and is preparing a package of hurt for your enemies. It gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. Enemy smoke is something you can send a wave of torpedoes into, wait for the muffled bang, and then commandeer for your own, personal use. This never gets old. One thing that smoke isn't, however, is boring. It opens up so many different tactical options apart from blunt aggression!

If we don't downvote, this elimination will take ages to run down. I think of downvoting in a purely relativistic context - making a choice between several ships doesn't necessarily mean that I think any one of them is a bad ship in itself.- 318 replies

Super containers - What to expect
Procrastes replied to RenamedUser_92906789's topic in General Discussion
The Intermittent Reward Principle The container system operates according to the intermittent reward principle. This principle was formulated after studying the behaviour of rats in captivity. The rats were presented with an easily-manipulated switch that, if pulled, could reward the rat with a tasty food pellet. First they tried a setting where the rat always got a pellet when it pulled the switch, and then they tried a setting where it was determined randomly whether or not a pulling of the switch dropped a pellet. Strangely enough, the rats were found to pull the switch much more frequently in the latter case. In other words, an added uncertainty about the reward acted as a stimulant for the desired behaviour; i.e., the pulling of the switch. I think you see where this is going... /One Happy Rat -

Me, I'm mostly a bit miffed that they lowered the normal SC output from 5 to 4 flags. But also feel like a twit when complaining about getting free stuff... so I guess that makes me a miffed twit. Gotta get back to some positive thinking here! -

Sorry, but no. Punishing people simply for playing with less skill than others would not only be detrimental to the game by driving away the player base, it would also, in my opinion, be morally wrong. The xp gain mechanic is quite enough incentive for good gameplay.

There really should be a comprehensive list of all available keyboard commands easily available in the game. Having to learn about vital functions this way, after nearly two years of playing the game, is more embarrassing for Wargaming than it is for us. Unless, of course, there already is a comprehensive list of all available keyboard commands easily available in the game. If so, I must beg leave to put the proverbial sock in my mouth. (What does Ctrl+G do?)

toggle spotter plane point-of-view on and off

This idea has been brought up before, and I think it might be a good one for the developers to look into. Has anyone heard any mention of this from the WG staff? -
Has the "Inertia Fuse for HE Shells" skill made Heavy Cruisers Redundant?
Procrastes posted a topic in General Discussion
I just watched the latest "Mingles with Jingles" video, in which Jingles ruminates a bit about how the new Inertia Fuse for HE Shells skill has made the Atago redundant in competitive battles. Jingles' observation, in short, is that the IFHE skill makes 152 mm HE shells so effective against armour, that all the Atagos have disappeared from competitive battles at tier 8, and been replaced by Mikhail Kutuzovs. The Mikhail Kutuzov has longer range, better AA and far better rate of fire, and while the Atago previously had the edge in armour penetration and damage dealing capability, especially against battleships, this advantage has now been eclipsed by the IFHE skill. The Atago now only brings the heal ability as an extra to the table, and this is not enough - especially considering that the Kutuzov has its own defensive mechanism in the form of a smoke generator. This started me wondering. If Jingles observation is correct, it might mean more than just the death of the Atago (please forgive the dramatic hyberbole, here) - it might mean that heavy cruisers as a ship class have become somewhat redundant. While it's true that the 203 mm HE shell is still the paramount firestarter, the ability to set fires might not be enough to keep it in the game. The swift-firing and fast-flying 152 mm shell is just so much fun to sling around the battlesea, and with added penetration, has it now also become the more efficient damage-dealer? I'll try to add the Jingles video below. The relevant part, here, is about 7 minutes into the clip. What are your thoughts?- 113 replies

Is powercreep to be expected in a 'free to play' game?
Procrastes replied to loppantorkel's topic in General Discussion
As new lines of ships are added into the game, powercreep is almost inevitable at some point. I don't think anybody feels very happy when a favourite ship is hit with the nerfbat, directly or indirectly, but I believe that it is best to be philosophical about these things, and accept that change lies in the very nature of an expanding online game like this. I am sure that a lot of developer's effort goes into mantaining a balance between keeping people happy with the ships they have, as well as eager to get their hands on new ones. I won't go "zen" all the way here, though. We should be active with our input to Wargaming, and let them know what we think. A constructive dialogue is really the best thing, but in the end, it's their company. I think they have done a good job with their recent expansions, adding ships and lines with new and challenging playstyles, and I will follow the game for as long as the fun remains.
