The pinging would indeed be epic, yes. And I must say, I take a rather dim view of the idea of giving other players access to a game mechanic that lets them dictate how I play the game. "So, you don't want to fire at the targets that I have selected for you? Too bad - less xp for you! Ha ha!!!" - Quite apart from the sad fact that the majority of the 'pingers' out there aren't exactly the most leak-proof tubs in the water, this kind of game mechanic would probably just give an added incentive for the kind of deluded Grand Admiral chat behaviour that we all know so well. All in all, I think the current xp system works well. I feel that I am amply rewarded both for capping and for shooting at the enemy. Which one of those two I choose to do, will depend on the tactical situation!

Cleveland: 21Shinonome : 16Mutsu : 20Fusō : 24Warspite : 16Molotov : 9Budyonny : 8 + 1 = 9. She's got the range, she's got the rate of fire, she's got the speed. Her huge turning circle is her only real, and much-needed, weakness. A more versatile ship than the Molotov, in my opinion.Duca d'Aosta : 13 - 3 = 10. Her guns are too few, and they lack enough hitting power. A beautiful little ship, though!

Capping is one of the most important tactical tools in the game, since it forces the enemy to react. It has the added bonus to promote dynamic teamplay, which benefits everyone. Giving good xp rewards for capping is therefore entirely proper, as I see it.

How do I activate the various national voice-overs? Please help!
Procrastes posted a topic in General Discussion
Hello, everyone! I need some advice on how to handle the audio settings in the game. I have read that it is now possible to set the voices of the captains/crew on my ships to use their various national languages, when they utter their little one-liners during the game. So that the English will speak in English, the Germans will speak in German, the French will speak in French, the ARP characters will speak in little girl anime, and so on and so forth. This is a feature I recognize from World of Tanks. But when I tried to change the settings from across-the-board-English last night, I could only make the switch from English to one other specific language. I could, for instance, make every captain/crew speak German. But I couldn't find the option to make them all speak in their own national languages. Is this possible, and if so, how do I do it? Or do I have to change the language voice-over manually every time I pick a ship from a different nationality? Please help!- 3 replies

I don't know if I am missing a point, but you certainly have one. It would be interesting to see statistics on container chasing, before and after the content of supercontainers was changed. It would honestly surprise me, if the perceived worse content has had any measurable effect on player behaviour.

The Intermittent Reward Principle The container system operates according to the intermittent reward principle. This principle was formulated after studying the behaviour of rats in captivity. The rats were presented with an easily-manipulated switch that, if pulled, could reward the rat with a tasty food pellet. First they tried a setting where the rat always got a pellet when it pulled the switch, and then they tried a setting where it was determined randomly whether or not a pulling of the switch dropped a pellet. Strangely enough, the rats were found to pull the switch much more frequently in the latter case. In other words, an added uncertainty about the reward acted as a stimulant for the desired behaviour; i.e., the pulling of the switch. I think you can see where this is going... /One Happy Rat

Cleveland : 27 Farragut : 8 Shinonome : 20 Mutsu : 21 Ryūjō (1/2/2) : 10 Fusō : 17 Aoba: 14 Graf Spee : 15 Warspite : 15 Molotov : 7 Budyonny : 10 Duca d'Aosta : 23 - 3 = 20. The Duca has worse guns, torpedoes and concealment than the tier VI British and Commonwealth cruisers, and considerably worse guns than the tier VI Russian cruisers. The combination of simultaneous hydro, defensive AA and spotter plane is the Duca's only real gimmick, but it doesn't win any battles. The top notch speed is of course handy, but I have found that it's better at getting her into trouble than getting out of it. Apart from her looks, the Duca is sadly underwhelming. Perth: 20 + 1 = 21. Moving smoke and your very own spotter plane, good stealth even without smoke, good guns, and those assassin-style single shot torpedoes. A great little ship! (Plus, koalas!) De Grasse: 20

Wow, she must have sunk like a stone. Thanks, my bad!

Cleveland : 30 - 3 = 27. A good ship, but those moon arcs... Farragut : 12 Shinonome : 19 Mutsu : 21 Ryūjō (1/2/2) : 10 Fusō : 15 Aoba: 17 Graf Spee : 15 Warspite : 15 Molotov : 10 Budyonny : 9 Duca d'Aosta : 23 Perth: 25 + 1 = 26. Moving smoke, a spotter plane with extra long-range fuel tanks, decent guns, and those magnificent single-shot Brit torpedoes. (Also, koalas!) La Galissionnière: 20 De Grasse: 20 Edited: I added the French newcomers to the list, at 20 points each.

I lost the first Operation Killer Whale, but got 4 stars in the second one, both times in my Budyonny. Smoke doesn't seem to be as vital in this operation, as in the Defense of Newport.
-
You don't see the Perth, the Perth sees you. (What you see, is a cloud of smoke moving across the waters and spitting fire at you, with a spotter plane buzzing around over it.)

Cleveland : 29 Farragut : 12Arizona : 6 - 3 = 3. Good gun setup, and kinda well armoured. But too slow and too easy to hit. Shinonome : 19Mutsu : 21 Ryūjō (1/2/2) : 10Fusō : 15Aoba: 20Graf Spee : 15Warspite : 14Leander : 19Molotov : 10Budyonny : 9Duca d'Aosta : 26Perth : 27 + 1 = 28. The World's Cutest Little Cruiser! (Also, very versatile. She's got a big bag of tricks but she's still not overpowered.)
-
Well, yes. But then there are those times when you are the one in the battleship, loyally plodding along with a bunch of cruisers... and you smile as you spot three enemy battleships appearing around the island ahead... and your cruiser buddies all suddenly turn 180 and leg it, leaving you sitting like a fat and distinctly unsmiling pig, just waiting for the sausage grinder. I tell you, I could write a book... it's no use being bitter about these things.

I played one Operation Aegis yesterday in my De Grasse, hoping to bag some plane kills in the latter part of the mission. Since we had two battleships in the team, I was rather optimistic about getting right into the cruiser scrap in the middle of the map as well. But I got totally shot to pieces by the enemy cruisers... and when I looked around from my sinking wreck, what did I see? Our two battleships, creeping verrrry slowlyyy out from cover behind the island furthest back on the map. They were so far away, I think they were even out of range from the enemy fleet. The mighty Bayern, peeking out from cover, looking so hesitant and timid that it almost made me laugh! Now, I am perfectly aware that I was my fault alone that I got wrecked. It's entirely up to me to keep track of where my allies are. And I do know that battleships have to proceed with some caution, even against lower tier cruisers, or they will be toasted or torped in short order. Still... somewhat funny.

Spotting Craft vs Catapult Fighter
Procrastes replied to AdmiralYatsumi's topic in General Discussion
Maybe having the float plane fighter attack the designated squadron, would be a good change of the game mechanics in some future patch? Out of hand, I can't really see why it wouldn't be a good thing - unless perhaps it would make the fighter too efficient versus carriers? I seldom play carriers, but I sort of doubt that this would be the case. Has this ever been suggested, or otherwise considered by Wargaming? Edited: To answer the main question of this thread: When given a choice between fighter and spotter, I almost always choose the fighter. I seldom hit anything at maximum range anyway, and I value the AA defense and the odd torpedo warning provided by the fighter. For cruisers, an added incentive is that the fighter usually stays aloft much longer than the spotter. -
Well, yeah, I know what you mean. I have a hard time figuring out how the Budyonny has ended up totally losing out to the Duca D'Aosta. I like this beautiful little Italian wave dancer, but I can't see how she could possibly hold her own against the fire power of the Russian pistoleer. I guess that's part of the fun of this thread - it becomes very clear how differently ships perform for different players. "It's not the ship, but the Captain that commands it."

Cleveland : 33 - 3 = 30. She lost too much when they changed her gun characteristics (which, it has to be said, was well merited for game balance purposes). Still a very good ship, though. Farragut : 20 Arizona : 7Shinonome : 17 Mutsu : 19 Ryūjō (1/2/2) : 8Fusō : 15Aoba: 22Fubuki : 14 Graf Spee : 21Warspite : 16Leander : 23Molotov : 16Budyonny : 10Dunkerque : 8 + 1 = 9. She brought something new to the game, namely those two quad-mounted forward-firing turrets. Not the best ship at her tier, but far from the worst. And her big 330:s are not to be underestimated!Duca d'Aosta : 26Perth : 35

Oh Captain, My Captain ”We’ve sighted the Tirpitz, Captain. She’s approaching on bearing 228, just beyond the peninsula ahead.” ”Very good, CO. Take us around the peninsula, if you please.” “Sir? We’ll be coming around no more than five kilometres from the battleship, point-blank range... our armour can’t withstand firepower of that magnitude.” “Trust me, CO. Take us around.” “Aye aye, Sir.” - - - - “Clearing the headland now, Sir. The Tirpitz has spotted us; her turrets are already turning.” “Very good, CO. Deploy smoke, and inform the torpedo station that they may fire at will.” “We don’t carry torpedoes, Sir.” “...say what? But, I was informed that the Fiji carries a full set of triple-tube Mk IV torpedoes?" “She does, Sir. This is the Belfast.” “...ah.” (fidgets with his shirt sleeve) “I see. Well, that could have been awkward, I suppose. Good thing we’ve just deployed smoke, eh?” “Yes, Sir. Although, if I may - that is the Tirpitz.” “Yes?” “She does carry torpedoes.” “She does?” “Yes, Sir.” “Oh. Yes, come to think of it, I did get the memo...” (straightens his shirt sleeve) “Well, that puts a bit of a spin on things, doesn’t it, CO?” “Yes, Sir.” - - - - (click--krzzzt--) "Crew, this is the Captain speaking. There isn't much time, so I'll make this brief. Funny thing is, when we sailed out this morning, I clean forgot which ship I'm on, ha ha, and unfortunately, this means we're now about to get sunk. What can I say, really the most rotten piece of luck... anyway, as the saying goes - it's time to think of England, and go down with dignity and a bit of a whistle. It's been a privilege." (--krzzzt--click) - - - - (Cut to an outside view, the camera at sea-level and approaching the ship at a tremendous speed. Somewhere, someone is indubitably playing ‘God Save the King’.)
-
Good advice! But if you are in a Scharnhorst, and you do get too close to a Belfast, then by all means get even closer - run the bugger down! He has no torpedoes; he can't stop you - and he can't run away, either, since you are nearly as fast as he is!
-
You are absolutely right, of course. I bought my first tier VIII premium ship long before I had accumulated enough experience to even get close to that silver tier. I know my limits, and I took my time learning the ropes, playing that ship - I think it was the Atago - very carefully and far less often than I played the lower and middle tier ships. I am still not a good enough player to feel entirely at home at the higher tiers, but playing at that level has allowed me to gain a much better understanding of the game at large, than would otherwise have been the case. I had that kind of encounter with a camera salesman a few years back. He so very clearly didn't want to sell me a Canon G12, since that was so very clearly far too good a camera for a guy like me. But he so very clearly couldn't outright refuse to sell it to me either, when I put money on the counter. I could have explained to him that, sure, maybe I wasn't a skilled enough photographer, yet, to know how to put that camera to its full use, but I wanted something that would allow me to grow as a photographer, and that would keep pace with me as I improved my skills. But I doubt he would have understood what I was talking about. Now, I'm sure I was going somewhere with how there is a moral to be gleaned from this, that goes for World of Warships, as well...

The Ishizuchi should be played with aggressive use of her excellent HE ammuntion. It deals good damage to most every target irrespective of ship class, and it's great for setting fires!

Long Live the Perth - the World's Cutest Little Cruiser! Things You Should Know About the Perth (Before You Buy Her) Are you one of those Royal Navy captains who have taken up a firing position in a cloud of smoke, only to succumb to wave after wave of evil torpedoes? That won't happen on the Perth! She's got special, anti-skillwall moving smoke! Just change course now and then, and keep puffing out smoke while you watch those enemy torpedoes sail right on by! Have you ever lost sight of your target after smoking up, simply because your allies have broken contact with the enemy? That won't happen on the Perth! She's got a special spotter plane, with extra long-range fuel tanks. Just send your little Walrus aloft, press the fire button, and have a relaxed cup of tea while watching listening to radio reports from your aeroplane pilot watching your enemies burn! Have you ever wept bitter tears because you had to choose between smoke, hydroacoustic search and a spotter plane? That won't happen on the Perth! She can take them all aboard at the same time! There are simply no hard choices, while sailing in the Perth! Have you ever repaired damage sustained to your Royal Navy cruiser? Alas, you can't do that on the Perth! Have you ever felt lonely, on the captain's bridge? That won't happen on the Perth! The Perth is, so far, the only ship in the game with an actual on-board crew. She's got koalas!

The most disappointing ship I've ever played? It has to be the Kirov. The Indianapolis is a close contender, but to be fair I've never really given ol' sharkbait a chance, and at least she still remains in port. The Kirov is the only ship that I have outright sold back to the junkyard, and that was after putting her through enough battles to get a feel for her. I never got her to do better than crap in any battle, and the fact that this is most likely due mainly to my own personal playstyle, is hardly relevant in this context. Her guns fire too slow to be of any use, she's too fat to dodge anything that shoots back at her, and she certainly can't take a beating - even I, with my abysmal gunnery skills, find it pretty easy to land citadel shots on enemy Kirovs.
