The case of the "battlecruiser" and the "fast battleship" is the same as the difference between an MBT and a Heavy/Medium tank. A battlecrusier was a capital ship which traded armor for speed, a battleship traded speed for armor, but when technology became more advanced a battleship could reach battlecruiser level speed without sacrificing much armor protection. It's like Is the Challenger 2 a heavy tank? Is the T-14 Armata a medium tank? No, they are neither. The T-14 has heavy tank level protection and firepower, while the Challenger 2 has medium tank level speed. They are MBTs. I think the battlecruiser and battleship roles are just mashed together in the fast battleship concept. Arguing about whether the Scharnhorst was a battlecruiser or a battleship is like arguing about whether water is hydrogen or oxygen
