I definitely ballsed up and over extended, only survived the situation below because the Nicholas decided to get into a knife fight. However at this point both teams have an equal number of ships and I'm occupying 4 enemy ships, You would expect the team to be capable of defending the cap given the numerical advantage. In addition to this the Carrier on my team was alive until the end (unopposed) and didn't try to reset the base capture.

It was a standard battle, not domination. I managed to break through the enemy line and wreak havoc, meanwhile my team capitulated and lost the base. Perhaps should have fallen back sooner but it was pretty hectic so my map awareness was a bit lacking.
