Yes, cruisers and destroyers were very active, but on the tactical level, that was mostly when BBs were not present, and when they were present in BB battles, their impact was mostly fairly small. As I said before, the game is tactical more than strategic.
-
But this also is a thematic game about naval warfare, and since the game is made with a theme, part of the attraction is the similarity in subject and feel to the thing that the theme is about. I notice that the people that love CVs and a lot of cruisers seem to be the same people that care the least about the theme and more about the pure gameplay itself. They also like the game to be more about teamwork, to a degree I feel is unrealistic based on the playerbase and mechanics available. Yes, CVs would dominate totally strategically in high tiers, but this is a tactical and not a strategic game. With the notable exception of the battle of Leyte, navies were very careful about not committing their surface ships to combat against each other when CVs were around. So at the tactical level, it is false to see that CVs would dominate the top tiers, as surface combat would only take place when CVs were not present.

It is just the impression I get from the arguments used at this forum. Yes, I know they may not be representative. The thing is that the people that dislike the BB heavy meta also want a more unhistoric balance between the ships, as in real life, cruisers and DDs could do little once the BB lines started firing at each other. Historically it is no doubt that BBs were much more effective in battles than cruisers and DDs. Also, except when led by commanders desperate or stupid, surface ships did not get into combat with each other unless CVs were either absent or ineffective. You also cleary see that in battles where both sides had CVs, other ships were usually ignored until the enemy CVs were sunk. So CV plans aggressively hunting BBs in a battle where both sides have active CVs is very unhistorical.

I have not foundt he statistics, but my impression is that the number of players online actually increased and have remained fairly stable since the german BBs were introduced and the game became more BB heavy. I think that there is a "silent majority" that prefer the BB heavy meta, while a vocal minority want to return to the old days when a lot of cruisers and CVs made games tedious for BB and DD players. I also have the impression that the players really intrested in BB heavy meta are the ones really interested in naval warfare and ships, while the ones wanting more cruisers and CVs are more like "general gamers".

As I see it, I prefer to play with to many BBs, rather than to many cruisers, to many DDs or any CV.

Why does less cruiser spam mean there is a balance issue?

aircraft carrier (cv) tir, 8-9-X. are to powerfull
steviln replied to HellsDD's topic in General Discussion
Maybe not, but 4 ships can also be difficult to organize in a random battle with no communication between players. Which also makes the game slower because ships are careful in their movement so not stray to far from other ships AA cover. -

It is however limited how much of the battlefield the plans can cover at one time, and you still have the problem with any ship leaving the lemmingtrain being jumped by a lot of bombers and torpedo planes... It is better that people go in the dark than people not going anywhere except camping around their spawnpoint. -

It is just my opinion off course, but if the CVs come back in force, I simply go elsewhere. I think games get more boring with one CV and games with 2 CVs are awful. -

I do not think that CVs are OP, but that games get more boring if people play correctly against them. If you hold together with cruisers and BB in a solid lemming train, the CV planes will really struggle. However, I think this make for a boring game where the games are dominated by two camping lemmingtrains. Ships being afraid to push out of fear of ending up alone and getting picked on by the CV. -
But with very few exceptions, in battles where CVs where present, the surface ships did not engage each other at all. In battles where both sides had effective CVs present, their plans simply ignored BBs and other surface ships because the CVs were so much more important. You can really say you had two types of battles, surface battles and carriere battles. The only surface battle where carriers planes engaged battleships where the battle of the Phillipines, and that was only because the japanese navy was desperate!

That was also the reason the US removed the torpedo tubes from their cruisers in real life. The considered the danger of the tubes detonating and sinking the ship larger than the chance of them actually damaging enemy ships. I think that to make cruisers more balanced, the USA cruiser should have better survivability compared to the ones having torpedoes.

Ranked Battles S5 [all rank battle topics merged]
steviln replied to RenamedUser_92906789's topic in General Discussion
I think Lo Yang is a little bit better than Benson, if it has hydrosearch that is. If used at the right moment, it can really cause serious damage to enemy DDs! Another thing is the MM. It seems it tries to give the same number of Bensons to both sides, and in quite a few games, I have had two Bensons on my side in my Lo Yang, while the enemy have two Benson and a Fubuki. My team usually win those battles. -
No, the CAP thing is only a way to make BBs camp even more and run for the map edge to not be burned to death.
-
If that hard cap happens, it just shows that cruiser captains like to whine rather than try to improve their gameplay. You seem to think that cruisers have some god given right to dominate any match? Why is it so much more important that cruiser captains enjoy themselves than players that play other classes have a good game?
-
So you want every match spammed by cruisers? To have 5 BBs in a match is not to much! How many cruisers do you want really? For my part I found the cruiser spam when there were maybe 9 cruisers per team some months ago extremy annoying.

Battleships ARE balanced at the moment (just)
steviln replied to Redcap375's topic in General Discussion
The problem with nerfing long range accuracy is that you can very easily get a situation where cruisers can safely burn BBs to death at long range. Htting a Kutuzov that consistently engage at maximum range can be difficult as it is. -
On the other hand, a skilled player with a MK on the other team is one of the worst experiences a BB captain can experience...
-
I think this game also have a lot of players that have played mostly strategy games like Civilization and such for years. it is true for both me and a few of the people I play with.
-
Can we get a hardcap on BBs already?
steviln replied to G01ngToxicCommand0's topic in General Discussion
On the other hand, there seems to be several thousand more players online on average in the evenings since the german BBs came, so it seems that someone is enjoying having so many BBs. I actually think than when playing anything else than a cruiser, having a lot of cruisers around can be a huge annoyanse. -
I rather think the british line is to different. The differences that are between the existing cruiser lines are great enough, and are noticable. Also, the differences in the other nations lines makes sense, but making CLs with no HE really makes no sense whatsoever.
-
I think first world problems can be serious. The poor children in Africa may be starving and being drafter as child soldiers, but at least they live in happy ignorance about RN cruisers in WOWS not having HE ammo.
-
Too many battleships in ranked.
steviln replied to anonym_TymY49y5i0fs's topic in General Discussion
The problem is that you can easily swing the balance the opposite way. If you increase the survivability of cruisers, we could easily have angled cruisers at long range just slowly burning every BB to death. -

steviln replied to anonym_TymY49y5i0fs's topic in General Discussion
More seriously, I do see the problem though. And I think such BBs very easily gets burned to death if the enemy have enough HE spammers. Personally, I prefer to close to "mid range" in BBs against cruisers, since it is much easier to delete a cruiser from that range. From maximum range I usually miss or do minimal damage, so I prefer max range engagements when using a cruiser against a BB. It may be because my aim is poor, but when I do one on one duels with BBs with my Kutuzov, the only times a BB kill me is when it charges and drive me towards the map edge and thereby get closer. -
How to make the RN CL's more fun to play
steviln replied to Admiral_Jellicoe's topic in General Discussion
I think the issue is that a lot of players fears the politics behind it. It seems that WG simply do not want RN ships to be popular, so they have an excuse to make fantasy ships from countries with a lot of players, rather than ships from countries that actually had active surface navies.
