Why WR and skill are generally correlated
xxNihilanxx replied to DDMafiaAssociateMember's topic in General Discussion
The problem with this thread is that most of us already understand the correlation between WR and skill as it is blindingly obvious. Those that don't see it will never have the capacity to understand it no matter how well it is explained to them. This is before you factor in the idea that all of the "naysayers" are the players who lack said skill and therefore have a vested interest in believing otherwise. -

I presume, given the overwhelming amount of support for reverting to the old "bugged" system, that this implementation is your highest priority? -

He is just the latest King Spud of Potato Mountain struggling through the game while decreeing that better players don't know what they are doing. He has a long line of predecessors and, unfortunately, will be succeeded by many more of his ilk. -

This is the mindset of a bad player and, for as long as you hold on to this mindset, you will remain a bad player. Good players automatically engage in teamplay without even thinking about it - they just do what is necessary to secure the win. Don't worry about progressing the tech tree - with teamplay you will secure enough wins (thus gain bonus XP etc) to move through the tech tree at a decent rate. -

Mis-read the third section as "a requisite in competitive" so 3rd answer would be different. -

Whether or not you agree is as nonsensical as it is irrelevant. Your are free to agree or otherwise with opinions but NOT FACTS. You could, for example, tell me that Athens is the Capital of Greece - would it be ok for me to respectfully disagree or would I just be plain wrong? Opinions are one thing (is Ed Sheeran the best thing to hit modern music or is he just a whiney busker made good?) FACTS are something entirely different. They are independant of opinion. You are attempting to respectfully disagree with mathematics - a bold position to take, do you have what it takes to back it up? You, whose knowledge of a game is insufficient to actually achieve as many wins as you do losses, are attempting to use what you think you have understood of the game thus far to make the claim that you can rewrite basic maths. Could it be possible, maybe, that, in actuality, you do not understand as much as you think you do and it is this that has led you to attempt to overturn mathematics?

You simply cannot look at one individual match and then draw conclusions based on the results, that isn't how statistics work. There are, for example, games where I do not manage to influence the outcome of the match all that much but the number of games where I do get to influence the outcome far outweigh the number of games where I don't. This is why we look at overall trends rather than any one specific match. I looked at my T6 stats and, while they aren't the greatest, it appears that I have around a 61% WR at that tier across all ships. Now it is fair to assume that a large proportion of the matches I have played in T6 ships (2097 if you're interested) will have been in T8 matches and yet, as you can see I still manage to hold my own at that tier. Why? Because I know the strengths and weaknesses of all the ships I can meet at that tier and know how to deal with each one regardless of the ship I am in. This includes knowing when to close the distance of the engagement or open the distance, whether to engage target vessel or simply keep him spotted for my team - the list goes on. A key factor for me, however, is the knowledge that the vast majority of this playerbase is absolutely terrible at the game and so I have the confidence to engage any enemy in the knowledge that I will probably win the engagement because a little skill is still a massive advantage when facing no skill at all. I have gunned down Clemsons in the Phra Ruang, I have gunned down Bensons in the Shinonome, I have outbrawled a Colorado whilst closing to point blank range in a PEF and so much more that should not have been possible. How? Because, in my heart, I know the enemy is most likely a terrible player and so my little skill will be enough to make the engagement go in my favour. You can carry on with your point as much as you like but all you are really saying with your argument is that you never learned basic maths at school. The level of statistical understanding required to see how WR is affected by player skill is really quite low and yet you seem proud to publicise repeatedly that your level of understanding does not even meet the incredibly low level required to understand this issue.

An idea to fix the, supposedly, OP Premium "problem"

So there are a number of premium ships that were considered to be over-performing to the point that they were removed from sale by WG. As a result of this WG are talking about making major changes tp the GC whilst simultaneously attempting to fire-fight the inevitable $hitstorm that accompanied the announcement. Well I have had an idea that I think could solve this issue once and for all to the satisfaction of all concerned. *Drum roll* Put them ALL back in the shop with a price tag of ~£5 (or equivalent in whatever currency) each. At that price, everyone can afford to own them and, as they are so cheap nobody can complain about not having one. WG would still be getting more revenue from these at a cut-down price than they are currently as even £5 is greater than the £0 they are currently getting for these ships. It's a win-win. Everyone is happy.- 60 replies

Something that comes across as little more than you gauging the size of the ensuing $hitstorm in order to determine exactly how much you will be able to get away with - and by "you" I mean WG, not you personally, fella. I fully understand your position, but before you breathe a sigh of relief at hearing that know that this means that I fully understand that, whatever your own personal views, your position is one of firefighter, contractually obliged to be little more than a "friendly" mouthpiece for the higher-ups in your company who pull your strings. I have said before that I have great sympathy for the position you are in, and I genuinely do. That doesn't preclude me from seeing your comments for the PR statements that they are. Judge a man by his deeds and not by his words - or in this case - judge a company by their deeds and not by your words.

Well if you believe the hype the range is approximately 12 AU and the duration about 13.5bn years.

With whatever due respect, mate, it would be a lot easier to trust WG if they behaved in a trustworthy manner instead of just telling us we should trust you. When you announce that you are contemplating making major changes to a premium vessel immediately after you finish selling huge amounts of your gambling boxes due to the fact that you specifically advertised them as having a good chance of awarding said vessel it looks, to me and many others, like just another game company engaging in shady business practices, something that seems to be the behaviour du jour of late. When you run this alongside the statement that you have nothing to gain by doctoring the figures to show exactly what you want them to show and that we should trust you on that you are asking us to engage in some serious Orwellian doublethink. Of course you have everything to gain by using hidden data to justify every decision you make, how stupid do you think we are? "We have data to show that the rise in violent crime has nothing to do with our decision to cut police numbers but no you can't see that data". Even if we do trust the fact that you are not fiddling the data to show what you want it to show surely you can understand that many of us have the capacity to doubt that your people have the competence to interpret that data correctly. I seriously doubt that you would or could ever interpret the data in such a way as to show that any one of your recent decisions was, in fact, a monumental phuq up, for example. Instead you would be more inclined to interpret the data as "players being overconfident", or some such. I don't mean to be rude but you guys do have a long and noble history of having to "apologise" for something that turned out to be pretty incompetent on your part. Many of us simply fear that this incompetence could well extend to your "data analysis". Surely it would be arrogant of your company to imagine that nobody smarter than you exists and that they may have a more accurate interpretation of your data than you have been able to achieve? You lot aren't infallible, you have shown that countless times. Trust me, you should never trust a man who says "trust me".

An idea to fix the, supposedly, OP Premium "problem"

Correct. I think you'd be surprised. The first week the Belfast, for example, got released they were everywhere - not so much these days. People do get bored of the same ship. That said, the idea of 12 players on one team all sitting in their Belfast smoke ranting in chat "SOMEONE GO SPOT" does strike me as slightly hilarious.... -

Mindless hysteria brought about by most people having zero ability to think for themselves and instead just parroting the thoughts of "famous" youtubers regardless of how out of date the opinion may be. -

Don't worry mate, even with a match full of both ships, in decent hands any line ship would still be the equivalent of one of these... -

It's not so much that but rather I originally forgot that you could do that with free XP. Having never seen the sense in using free XP to skip line ships and thus never having done it myself I just kinda forgot it was possible. -

Gems can be resold, virtual ships can't. The people who bought the full price ships when they were on sale got to play them for years before the "masses" got their hands on the cheap ones so I doubt they could legitimately complain. As an owner of most of them I would prefer that everyone had them, no matter how cheap, than have them get nerfed. -

Most players would drift away from them very quickly when they realised that they weren't getting the expected performance from these ships, coupled with the lack of line progress I think the "problem" you describe would sort itself out pretty quickly. Knowing the playerbase the way I do you could even put them all together in a bundle too, so you could sell them for £5 each or all 6 for £35 -

In order to progress the line, maybe? You can play Belfast game after game after game, if you like, but without spending any additional money, it won't get you a millimetre closer to the Minotaur, for example. I had the Belfast on the day it came out but, even now, I still play the Fiji. It does get quite boring playing the same ships over and over. -

This would only last a short time and is only what we see whenever a new line is introduced anyway. People would soon drift away from using them when they realised they couldn't achieve the performances that they expected from these ships.
