I mean i wouldnt rush a stalin to begin with because it is a bit iffy, but if i did find myself 5km from a stalin, id rather go full broadside and have a decent chance of surviving, than go nose in/angled and get one-shot Theres not much choice as stalin overmatches your nose ^^

ive gotten overpenned by stalingrads plenty of times in my smolensk at short range, if you get citadels on smolensk with stalin at short range, then hes either not perfectly broadside to you, or your shells might have fused on the water At the muzzle velocity of 950 m/s a 0.022 sec fuse gives the shell enough time to pass through about 20 meters of ship, the smol isnt that wide ^^

This is your problem ^^ Never ever ever angle against large guns in smolensk. Ever Either you go full broadside and enjoy a salvo of overpens, or if you are at very long range, you try to dodge the salvo completely, but angling against battlecruiser-battleship guns in the smolensk is the absolute worst thing you can ever do, it gives their shells time enough to fuse. Its not just about the fact that 430mm+ shells wont fuse at all against your armor, but many smaller shells will have time to travel all the way through your ship before the fuse timer runs out. all battleships at tier 10 except to some extent the bourgogne will overpen you with every bullet if you go full broadside at less than 10-8km, even stalingrad follows this rule. Beware of shells that fuse on the water though, those will hurt, but should be pretty rare Stop angling, show flat broadside
