    Well, take my opinion for what it is, nothing more. I just offer my idea, based on what I know, but I'm far from knowing it all. There have been times in which I've been proven wrong around here.

    I don't know if there is any way to tag someone; to attract their attention I just use the quote function, normally. I'd say that a 190 m/s difference is too big for this to be a fair comparison, in any case.

    We should see how the shell would perform at distance. Anti-tank rounds are one thing, because the distances involved are rather low; naval rounds are another thing, I believe. One thing to keep in mind would have been how well an armour-piercing shell kept its speed after being fired. Some lost speed rather quickly, other instead retained it more and performed better. So, I wouldn't be sure about it...

    Why not? For the Italian tree, we'll face a similar situation with the corresponding Tier 6 BB, the Francesco Caracciolo; she's definitely going to need some serious secondary and AA buff, and we might go with a reconstruction similar to that done to the WWI Italian battleships in the 1930s. Otherwise, she'd end up being CV fodder.

    And Cuniberti's ideas were not limited to slapping an all-big gun battery on a battleship and be off with it, you know. It was also about a ship faster than the ones currently in service (Cuniberti was more or less as obsessed by speed as Lord Fisher, or so it seems, so the adoption of turbines was a definite possibility), and well protected (his design postulated a 12-inch belt), as he wished for his ship to be able to outrun the existing ones and sink them before their shots could seriously damage it. Here's a sketch of the ship he proposed to the Italian Navy in 1902, before his article on Jane's: Also, I have explicitly stated that Cuniberti was merely the one that first published such a concept, going outside the studies being conducted in those years, and that said studies were being undertaken by several major navies; I don't think I implied that without Cuniberti we wouldn't have seen the dreadnought battleship.

    Not "unsinkable" per se; she was called by the press the "mighty Hood". And her showing the flag around the world made her without doubt one of the most widely known warships of the interwar era. The admirals and captains who knew better probably exchanged embarassed glances when they heard of that.

    Well, to be fair, some say that in some pre-dreadnought designs (such as the Regina Elena-class) the Regia Marina anticipated the emphasis on firepower and speed, at the cost of protection, that would be found on battlecruisers... But let's not get too much carried away, shall we? I think we can leave the paternity of the battlecruiser in British hands...

    For your information, the Royal Navy was the first to build and commission an all-big gun battleship, that afterwards came to be known as "dreadnought", but the concept was being developed at the same time in other countries, and the first one to publish such concept was an Italian, the naval engineer Vittorio Emanuele Cuniberti in 1902.

    Unfortunately, no. And given the confused nature of said engagement (the opposing lines intermingling, ships firing on allies, etc.) I am a bit overwhelmed by the idea of scavenging through damage reports, if available, to see if some 100 mm hits connected (because these are hits claimed, we don't know if it's true or not), and how much damage they inflicted.

    I tend to believe that to gain the appellative of stubborn, a fight just has to last longer than one fells it should. I found something, though. So, it took more than two hours of a furious stern chase to take it out. Still, there is mention of possible torpedo runs, but not on any sensible damage caused by her fire.

    In shape, it was similar to that of an atomic bomb detonation (no surprise here, there are plenty of examples of non-atomic explosions resulting in such clouds); in height, no, since it reached a maximum height of 6 km, while the detonation of "Little Boy" over Hiroshima caused a mushroom cloud that at its top was about 16 km high.

    There is also the First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, in which Teruzuki claimed hits on seven U.S. ships. In any case, I don't think that the phrase "very stubborn fight" automatically means that the Hatsuzuki caused lots of damage to its opponent; I believe it's more likely that it fought long and kept a heavy fire. Moreover, if you find yourself in such a position, you fight back at the enemy with everything you have, even if the weapons you have are really inadequate or ineffective against them. The first Italian ship sunk during the war, the gunboat/minesweeper Giovanni Berta, was sunk by two light British light cruisers near Tobruk, and even though its commander knew it was pretty much useless it returned fire with its 76 mm gun as best as it could. Anyway, the cruiser involved were the Santa Fe, the Bimingham, the Mobile and the Reno.

    "Civil and calm" is something these guys, who come here only to ragequit and rant, will never be. A pity, really. But that's online gaming for you, I'm afraid.

I admit I'd give them a try, if they were regular tree ships (because so far I have not spent a cent on this game, and I might broke the rule only for some very palatable Italian premium); but I would expect them to be really difficult to get the hang of. I'd outright love to see them as opponents, though. Moar XP piñatas, pls! I personally feel more reserved about the Akizuki; if nothing else, because her main armament looks a bit problematic to me. 100 mm is a bit on the small side for anti-ship duty, and it looks they were optimized for AA duty. Not a bad thing, given the importance of said factor especially in the last years of the war, but it might mean it's not that good of a ship even against fellow DDs.   22. Deck armor is a good thing to have, but it doesn't seem to me that it's that important; as far as I know, there aren't that many citadels that happen at extreme range against BBs. Its forward firing turrets make her a tactically interesting ship, and it means exposing her broadside much less than other ships (but a bit nonetheless, if one wants to bring even the rearmost turret to bear); but it doesn't mean she cannot be damaged through the forward bulkhead. A small superstructure may give her some advantage in terms of concealment, though. We'll have to see.

If this game were about uniqueness, I'd agree with you, and I'd propose to put in the US design for a "torpedo battleship" - a battleship meant to fight other battleships by firing lots of torps at them. However, it is not. And I think that, in a game that has a slight tendency to reward number of guns, these designs are not going to be "player friendly"...
  24. In their original forms, they're going to be in trouble... Good guns, but far too few of them; light cruiser-style armor, and good but not awesome speed...
  25. And that's why they're painful to decipher! I really don't envy WG... the Alaska should be pretty popular requests, but they're going to give some pretty headaches...
