Matchmaker Discussion Thread & MM Balance
Xevious_Red replied to Excavatus's topic in General Discussion
Counter arguement; - Behaviour like that is a rarity rather than commonplace. -Anyone who is "team lost, ok I go die" will simply find another excuse rather than stats. Maybe its the map. Or which DD the team has etc etc. Players like that aren't going to suddenly be model players just because they can't see stats, they just find a different excuse. You dont need to check stats in game though, particularly since the mods that do so tend to only show that ship, and are virtually worthless if they have a low number of battles in it. Equally LACK of stats allows people to run their mouth, because suddenly there's no way of calling them out on their BS. For example, if I suddenly claimed that the Kleber is massively OP, and that I do 200k damage per game, get 9 kills and its ultra easy mode, at the moment one quick check would reveal that not only do I not have that much damage in it, but that I dont even own it, and have never even used it. Suddenly my "arguement" would be blown out of the water by being revealed to be based on nothing but lies. Since a lot of the forum is discussion about balance etc, with no public stats expect to see a lot more bad faith arguements. Lets use another example: a few posts above, you have a screenie showing the Yugumo with 80% WR. Now here's the problem: You COULD be a guy with 1000 games in the yugumo, and be a super unicum player with it. If that's true then Id be very interested in any wisdom you have to share about it - clearly you're a master in it. You could however, simply be a guy that played 5 games in it and happened to win 4. In which case your experience with it is significantly less. With no way of checking the credentials of people's advise, prepare yourself for a lot more "tRuSt mE iM aN eXpErT" when it comes to threads asking how to play better. -
Punished for trying to win - AKA chatbanned and karma dropped

You die 5 mins because the enemy focus you. You say you don't have any back up. You say you check your position. You push, and then die. Have you considered, that instead of raging at your team for "no support", that pushing within the first 5 mins is a bad plan? Particularly for a ship that excels at kiting like the Zao? Nearly everything in this game benefits kiting - torps, shell flight time, ability to disengage. Pushing into the enemy early game is probably the worst idea as it hands all the advantages to them. Instead you want to play defensively until you have enough of an advantage on a flank to be able to push aggressively. The Zao is my top ship, and it plays the long game -early aggression is nearly always a misplay. While you're busy shouting at your team for no support, they're probably wondering what the f**k their Zao is doing. -
It happens with CV because the MM has to match you with another player of the same class. While the other classes are a bit more of a soft limit (e.g. 2 cruisers vs 3 cruisers), with CV it's a hard limit - there are no 1 CV vs 0 CV games. So if you pick a CV then it HAS to find another CV. And since its also a hard limit regarding tier, it HAS to find you a tier X CV to be matched against. Unfortunately, there's also the restriction of finding a battle in 5 mins. So what happens is if a CV sits in the queue for over 5 mins, then as soon as another appropriate CV joins the queue, the MM throws together a match with whatever ships it has available. In short, either you or the other CV sat in the queue for so long the MM threw together a game with what it had. If you want to avoid it, leave the queue and rejoin to reset the queue timer

Anyone sensible makes use of both types depending on the situation. E.g with a BB: Broadside? Ap is better for citadel chances. Angled or nose in? HE, unless you can overmatch their bow armour. Very long range when you have terrible dispersion? Depends how lucky you feel. HE can be useful for making them burn a DC before the "real" contact is made.

Player base skill Level in this game is a SAD
Xevious_Red replied to _FarmCat_'s topic in General Discussion
I left my pc on while I was out. My father in law decided to have a go on my "tanks game" (world of tanks). I came back to find I was marked as a team killer - turns out he had been shooting all the green tanks. The guy's a paramedic.- 57 replies

Its hard to explain, I like the social aspect of them being actual people rather than just AI, and that I could chat with them if I wanted, but at the same time not actually forced to HAVE to talk to them, and that Im mostly free to set about trying to win as I see fit.- 57 replies

Xevious_Red replied to _FarmCat_'s topic in General Discussion
Ah see I view Randoms as a solo challenge, where either you might get some support, or you might have to put your big boy tryhard pants on and hard carry. Similarly the enemy ships range from a speedbump to be deleted on your way to forcing a victory, to a dangerous individual opponent. I enjoy the variation this brings, and if Im brutally honest I tend towards lone wolf rather than full team cooperation- 57 replies

I'm slightly ambivalemt about it. Clan battles are good for example, but I actually find them less fun than randoms. Similarly derpy players might be annoying if they're on my team but there's just as good a chance they'll be on the enemy team, and who doesn't enjoy lol-deleting a broadside ship.- 57 replies

clan battles [NIKE] Not Intentionally Killing Enemies Clan recruiting
Xevious_Red replied to StratosGR's topic in Clan Recruitment
Fringe benefits include: -Watching @StratosGR and @Peng_Zhuang call each other noobs. -You can probably pad your WR with some 3 man divisions -Whatever ST ship StratosGR is testing draws aggro like nothing else; the enemy will be so busy shooting and reporting him that you get left alone. -
If you're having credit woes, also recommend joining a clan - there's plenty that dont care about ability, and are only formed to get the clan bonuses. One of the clan bonuses if they have the right buildings is a reduced repairs cost. This adds up to quite a saving, I believe the max is 15% reduced costs

- Get yourself set up correctly; there's lots of useful info to be had that's off by default. You want the minimap nice and large; this is a huge source of info. Having the ships last known position on shows you on the map where ships were last spotted. Having ship names on lets you know WHAT ships were last seen and where. -Drop down to tier 4/5 until you feel you are good enough to move up. More on this later. -Have a working knowledge of what the ships you'll face do. This doesn't mean you need to memorise everything, but knowing a ship has long range torps vs having no torps is useful. -Play all the classes. This will help with your ship knowledge, but also give insight into what enemy ships are capable of, and are likely to do. It will also help you read the minimap better as you can better assess what is a threat and what isn't -If you can, brush up on your understanding of game mechanics. Understanding things like concealment, AP overpen, fire locations etc means you understand better what is going on, and can make better descisions. -Learn from your mistakes. Why did you die? What could you have done differently? What choices did you make that could have aided the team more? -If you die, watch another ship on your team. Learn from their mistakes. What do they do that ends badly for them? What do they do that works out well? - Watch the minimap. A lot. See how the battle is unfolding. Don't just get caught up in your little section. -Use your knowledge and the minimap to predict what is GOING to happen. That cruiser that's yoloing on his own against 3 enemies; is he going to survive? That push of 6 enemy ships through C, are the 2 ships your team have there going to stop them? -Play until your predictions of what's going to happen is largely correct. -Use your looking at minimap + accurate predictions to position yourself BEFORE it happens; this way you can capitalise on the situation instead of being caught flat footed. Frequently for example this will involve leaving your team to finish off the one ship while you react to the threat that's ABOUT to happen in 1-2 mins. -Do all this until you can accurately read the map, read the flow of battle, react ahead of time, and be a positive influence for your team. -When you reach this point, and are mostly winning and mostly being near the top of the score board, it's time to move up a tier and start learning that meta.

According to wows numbers, your 6 games in york have resulted in 4 losses and 2 wins. So of those you've actually won twice. Performance seems decent. Your last 7 days you actually have a 57% WR, so this just looks like a bit of bad luck.
-
How does this fix anything? People are annoyed that their team drives around like a headless idiot and does nothing of value, not that their WR goes down by 0.15% Ending stats doesn't suddenly make people play better. People don't play like derps because they're afraid of losing their K/D rario, they play like derps because they're not any good at the game, don't understand mechanics, and make bad descisions.

AA priority sector - how to select L/R?!
Xevious_Red replied to AdrianTheImmortal's topic in General Discussion
These videos are out of date now. It's now point camera and click For ease of use, I remapped to spacebar as its much easier IMO -
I'm not a huge fan of CV for Operations - Tier 6 CV dont do a huge amount of alpha damage, while in operations there's lots and lots of enemy ships, and spotting isnt a big consideration (as the bots just come towards you anyway). If I had to pick one, I'd use Ryujo because of the torp alpha and the relatively fast speed of planes.

IFHE GK is lots of fun. Particularly when you can use islands to ambush something. A thing of joy when you pull it off, given its ungainly size. IFHE GK is my fav BB to play in randoms

Xevious_Red replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
The follow up question is will the GZ B have just a black hull, or will the planes be black too? My guess is probably only the hull. -
Bad players think that they are great, and it's everyone else at fault. They can't be forced to L2P since they think it's everyone else who's wrong. Alternatively, they think it's purely luck, or rigged against them. Average players can't think outside of very basic ideas like DD go to caps. So when they see a bad player avoiding the cap (I hunt CV!), OR a good player avoid the cap (it's full of smoked up radar ships), they put it all down as bad play, and again it's all someone else's fault. Slightly above average players tend to think they're the best thing ever, and refuse to acknowledge they might actually make mistakes as well. Unicum players frequently have unrealistic expectations, forgetting that being in the top 10% means that 90% of players are worse than them. Look at the forums - lots of complaints about bad teams, WG need to do something about bad players, or make people learn things. Very very few people actually asking for advice, or admitting they might not know everything/be the best.

Several things: - Don't bother "stat padding". You could play a bunch of very low tier ships to bring your WR up, but it wont actually make you any better, or more likely to win at high tiers. - Hold off on the high tiers. The game gets more complicated and less forgiving as you go up. 600~ games in random you're probably not ready for high tiers (not if you want to win). Stick around the mid tiers to learn more. -Battleships are "easy" for newbies, but they're not very influential unless played well, and its far too easy to take the route of sitting at the back, doing some damage, and being virtually zero influence. Play the other classes. Your WR may actually drop at first (other classes are harder), but these are the more influential classes. Getting better with them will mean you win more. Understanding the other classes will help you play BB better too. -Try multiple different lines, as not all ships from a class play the same. For example I love cruisers, and Im a big fan of the Zao and Hindenberg. However I really dont get on with the Des Moines or the Minotaur, and cant make their play style work (for me). They're both excellent ships, but dont suit me.
-
That's a fair arguement. However if it's only needed so they can't immediately re-engage then you can simply up the cool down from 5 secs to 15-20 sec. Would also eliminate being able to re-engage, without being abusable. Since the AA has been changed so that short range is now the highest continuous (as its all zones stacked), as compared to that video where it was the weakest, you wouldnt just be able to circle and wait it out.

What is slingshot the implemented solution to? As far as I was aware, slingshot only exists because of the immunity frames. The immunity frames only exist because you can't really steer your planes while the bombs are falling, and the only reason you can't steer is because WG chose to make you watch bombs fall. If they didn't bother making you watch the bombs fall, and instead handed control of the planes straight back to you (like with rockets and torps) then you wouldn't need immunity frames, and slingshot wouldn't exist anymore. Further, slingshot isn't a needed mechanic - its only used to bypass AA so you can bomb a DM/minotaur without heavy casualties, or to bomb a ship in the middle of a fleet. Neither of which are "required" Most of the time I don't even bother using it - it feels like an exploit, so I'm curious to know what requires it to stay.

This is the comedy irony - play a CV well and you get more compliments than in anything else
-
I actually do. RTS was fun in the same way chess is fun - its not much to look at, but its about outplaying your opponent (the other CV). Rework is fun the same way call of duty games are fun - it's not particularly strategic, but there's lot of explosions and action sequences. RTS made me sweat - 20 mins of solid attention and concentration. Rework is relaxing - 20 mins of flying around dodging flak and blowing things up.
