If a DD sits back it is playing safer but a BB sitting back is being a braindead bob? -

Ranked Battles S5 [all rank battle topics merged]

I had a rough time after hitting rank 13 in the first weekend and dropped back to 15 but since then I have made steady progress to 10. I have had a busy week and not played so much and I have a busy weekend but then next week I can fairly nail it and hopefully make some serious progress. -
Whilst this happens people do split, early on the DDs who are a big threat, but as the game progresses you get more opportunities e.g. splitting, reduced AA from taking hits and perhaps the deletion of a pesky AA cruiser.

I bought the Blyska a while back and whilst good I would have waited if I knew this was coming. My Gremy captain is idle for sharing on this whilst less ideal for higher tier Russian DDs. Not sure what to do... with the Shiney horse, Saipan and Blyska my tier 7 premium options are already... excessive.

Which forum members have you seen in random battles?

Met Gunship14 in ranked. I was in my shokaku and he was in my team in his Atago. I did screw up my first attack as I was concentrating on the 20 planes I killed from strike lex but in the process got my TBs eaten. But, then I got my act together, but unfortunately it wasn't enough and we lost... but I kept my star which is quite an achievement for a CV -
CVs are still beasts. They never been anything less then that.

Interesting. Tell me more about how I don't understand CV gameplay. I am glad that you went out of your way to point out the obvious but I've read my post that you quoted and I don't think I ever advocated getting as far away as possible. As it happens I try to never sit still in my CV and move to areas protected by my team whilst also trying to keep as close as I can, but, if you get yourself into the position where you are spotted and able to be countered by everything (as Mymeara said) then you have done it wrong. But hey, now we both seem to be pointing out the obvious. As for the IJN/USN debate you are simply wrong in stating that they are not outclassed. Whilst USN are perfectly able to perform in games (not going to argue that - I've done fine playing my USN CVs) this usually relies on the enemy CV captain just being a bit rubbish. IJN CVs perform better - says statistics. -

They do but one of their main issues is the completely 1-sided nature of the CV lines i.e. IJN outclasses USN. As for your next point I find it hard to believe you even made it. The very fact that CVs can project their power to any point on the map removes the need for them to be somewhere where they get themselves spotted. -
The Benson is a gunboat, a knife fighter, and this means that you really want to have all of those guns. Whilst having defensive AA has its merits in certain situations, the loss of firepower means that you struggle to excel at what the Benson excels at.

What? I guess someone could try spec Scharnhorst for AA if they want to waste skill points but it is not the best build for it and I would have to assume most people won't - it is a target that I am perfectly happy attacking in my Hiryu or Saipan (weaker than the Gneisenau). Yes, US BBs are AA monsters - even the NM and Colorado are good, for their tier. But, you deal with the NCal and higher US BBs by avoiding them until they are much lower health, preferably having been HE spammed for a while which will have knocked their AA down from impenetrable to really-quite-strong and then you suck the losses and finish them. Some destroyers have it. Most either don't, or it isn't the best option. And anyway all it does is delay you whilst it runs and then you carry on as before. This discussion would be a lot better if it remained rational but claiming that a Shiney Horse is a tough target is a bit silly and trivialises any valid points being made elsewhere. -

CVs would be screwed if teamplay was a thing. As much as there are problems with ranked you only have to play a few games to see how a bit of increased teamplay can mean that life can get very difficult for a CV captain. I have run out/low on planes in ranked more often than randoms with more ships around and that is because sometimes you have to suck up the losses to make the right attack at the right time. I have slowly been playing CVs since CBT and I have never stopped enjoying periodic play in them and I have no problem in making them work. I saw someone comment that they haven't seen CVs in ranked above 3rd and having played quite a few games in them I have definitely been above there but tbh they are quite short games really which don't favour CVs and even with the changes to XP mechanics it doesn't always reflect critical assistance you have given at points in the game. -
A 2 BB div complaining about BB numbers in a game. Now... how could you change that?

Getting out of tier 6 was insanely easy. Because Fuso. I then made good progress to rank 13 using the Benson and NC - this was all done on Saturday. NC has many strengths but particularly your AA really makes you an unattractive target to CVs... the problem is there isn't a huge amount of CVs so often that obvious advantage is often wasted. I then started playing further on Sunday and it was disastrous - I quickly fell back to my irrevocable rank of 15 and stayed there for a bit. There were so many games where you could see the loss from a mile away.. Things like the fubuki who wants to come from further away to B because he thinks he is faster than a Benson. Not only that, but when you tell him he is wrong he wants a race because that is more important than winning. Then there is the back line Benson firing torps at open sea (i.e. there was no target) and taking me out. I told the team not to go too far west on the map North but I have still seen depressingly high numbers of ships on both teams end up at the 3 line and most of them don't realise they are being stupid (and will argue that they are being useful!) and throwing away victory. I got angry and disillusioned pretty quickly. Luckily, I could drop no further. Eventually I switched to the Shokaku, won 7 out of 8 and made it to 10. Played 2 games when I was too tired and dropped back to 11 but progress so far as been ok I guess. I think CV play will become harder as the Lexi players fail to progress but I feel it is a strong way to progress. With a busy Monday and Wednesday nights this week and a busy weekend I will be slightly behind the curve in terms of progression so maybe I can catch up relatively easily next week but once the CV play gets too difficult I will probably move back to the Benson/NC. -
inked... met you yesterday in my shokaku and didn't deal particularly well with you. As for my general experiences... I was pretty successful in my Shokaku - too many Lex opponents and shokakus without 15 point captains which meant I was able to support the teams quite effectively. As for people saying that a bad CV makes you lose.. yea if your CV is useless it makes it v hard but then I had 1 game yesterday where I dominated the other CV, kicked out lots of damage but my team insisted on dying really quickly anyway and it was a loss.

CV situation at 0.5.12 from reddit

90% of who? The Tirpitz is as competitive as she was on the first day they put her on sale. I like how you can point out the exact number of seconds TBs take longer to reload but with the Tirp all you can do is stick a made up percentage in front of you talking about your feels. -
Presumably with a higher chance of starting a fire? I guess you don't think there is already plenty of fires in the game as it is...

Skill doesn't translate to insta win. Skill matters as it improves your chance of winning. The harder you carry the better the chance that weaker team mate's or other people's are not translated into a loss. You can't account for stupidty, and luck and mistakes and loads of other factors that are out of your control but you can help mitigate their impact. -

Damn that screen is dark. Not see that map, and surprised it is even in the ranked rotation.

Right, if it meets another idiot running strike, and assuming that the enemy don't stick together a bit more since this is a more competitive game mode. And lets not get into Lex visibility (has to sit way back) and rearm times meaning that getting back to the CV, landing, rearming, taking off and then returning to the battlefield will take way more than 2 minutes and that is before you have to attack, wait for damage control to be used and cool off before you go for the second strike... which still requires the enemy to have no fighters that can delay or completely nullify the seconds DoT attack. Oh and did I mention heavy AA ships, particularly the the Kutuzov and NCal (before you look at good AA but questionable choices such as the NO and other ships that can run defensive AA such as Mogami and Hipper) But, I have my 15 pt captain Shokaku and I might well run some CV games so why am I trying to talk you out of taking a CV that if we met makes my life trollishly easy. In fact, anyone reading this please disregard my earlier post and the above 2 paragraphs and pick the Lex, any loadout you like
-
1st rule of CV in ranked = don't pick Lexington. It has no viable loadout for ranked.
