So...did anyone figure out the best way to play GZ?
Filipin00 replied to Filipin00's topic in Aircraft Carriers
May I know why bombs have (in case of GZ) over 300 mm of pen when the fuse is set to detonate after 30-something mm? Isn't that like, the red herring then? As in, I have 300+ mm of pen, I can citadel a, let's say, yamato because my pen is enough to reach citadel, BUT, bomb actually detonates after around ~30 mm..... THAT I never understood -
I've been literally thinking about that as well, and seriously, the WWI flag was way more aesthetically pleasing, beautiful, than the current one.

Me again, a big shout-out to JellyFish for doing this video on GZ dive bombers. In the video he covered the approach angles and various ways to do AP drops on a test dummy, the cleveland. The video is not long, but does imo show the core problem with dive bombers on GZ and the difficulty of using them properly -
Well if you could spot them for yourself but not the others, as a player who likes to play CVs as much as other ships, I would consider that fair. But, on the flip-side, patrol fighters consumable would have to be able to spot AND engage enemy planes, so you have to use them wisely, either to spot, but then you don't have them for fighting off enemy CV, or fight the enemy CV but then your team has no spot

I'm having trouble using Graf Zeppelin AP bombs on dive bombers. Little disclaimer: I know about recent buffs nerfs and I know that it's kinda shitty but hear me out. First I was using them without too much thinking and barely scored any citadel...almost never.... Then I tried controlling aircraft diving speed using boost to slow down or speed up and it kind of seemed to work nicely as I was able to score 5,6 or even 7 citadel hits in one match. Then after some time it seemed as if that also doesn't work..... Can someone explain me just HOW do they work??? It's all like a damn wild west with this, no consistency!! Where can one find exact bomb specifications that would be so helpful if I actually knew the pen, the time fuse at which bomb detonates and stuff like that, I don't know of these things I don't know which targets to shoot, nothing!!

The only difference is, there is no flying up and then diving, no attack preparation time, they immediately start diving and there is no delay between starting attack and dropping bombs, you can literally double click to start attack and drop the same second. And the aiming reticle is a circle :P

I don't have much problem with RNG, I accepted it and that's how it works. The point of this thread is bomb penetration, how much penetration does the bomb have, which targets do I drop, non-armored like cruisers or heavily armored like battleships? I've successfully citadelled yamato and großer kurfürst(and bismarck/tirpitz), but not BBs like amagi or north carolina, succesfully citadelled lower tiered BBs like nagato or nelson, and 50:50 to citadel a cruiser like hipper or charles martel. I'm baffled edit: Though I have one more question regarding aiming. I've noticed inner and outer elipse of aiming reticle joining together the longer I'm waiting to make attack. Does that make ANY difference as to where the bombs will land? It LOOKS like your aim is getting narrower but it's a trick because the maximum dispersion is always the same regardless of the inner elipse.

Then the solution is simple, either change the squadron to have 9 planes with 3 on each attack run, or improve RNG
-
So, if we consider nominal approach when attacking - the one without using speed boost for neither speeding nor slowing down, before or during an attack, if it hit citadel of a bismarck/tirpitz with all 4 attacks (that I did), then nominal penetration would be like....superstructure 16mm + deck 20something mm plus citadel armor around ~130...? Would that be like the correct way to calculate? Because after figuring that out I had over 300% success rate in hitting any ship citadel regardless of ship type, by simply adjusting plane diving speed during attack, I was able to do 5,6 or 7 citadels per battle, before I barely did 1 citadel hit in 5 battles

May I ask, where can I find the exact NUMBERS for this? I'm searching the internet like a mad man trying to find the exact numbers for pen, bomb speed and other characteristics but can't find anything. I was resorting to testing which ships I can citadel with ap bombs without using boost at all to find approximate values lmao

I think I've gotten the hang of using AP dive bombers, depending on how armored the target is, during diving you either need to use boost to slow down planes if the target is low armored to decrease bomb inertion(and therefore its pen) or accelerate to increase pen if the target is heavily armored. I've used bismarck/tirpitz as a comparative point, I've succesfully citadelled it with normal approach without using boost to neither accelerate nor slow down. When attacking cruisers and low tier battleships I've decelerated during the dive to release the bombs from much higher altitude under 90°angle and on slow speed and succesfully citadelled ships like nagato and nelson, same for pretty much any cruiser, decelerate upon diving and hit citadells with ease. Today, I've tried accelerating while making a dive attack on großer kurfürst and hit 2 citadells for 14k so the tactic works almost every time if we disregard the RNG edit: hope anyone struggling with GZ finds this useful. -
What I would like is the system in which AA is fully controlled by player so every player has equal chance of shooting down planes. while every CV has equal chance of avoiding all or most of that damage, as it would depend on individual skill.
-
Separation of spotting function from attack aircraft....? And a CV would what.....attack enemies blindly? First scout, target would disappear after 1 sec and then attack blindly? I don't understand what you're trying with this but ok.....
-
I agree with those points. Each tier 8 premium CV in their current form have something going for them except Graf Zeppelin. Kaga has enormous reserves, Saipan tier 10 planes, Enterprise....well overall it's good idk much about its characteristics.. only Graf Zeppelin has well....nothing....at least it had speed before the nerf but even then it wasn't as good as other tier 8 CVs
-
Honestly the main reason I bought it was the jericho trumpets(sirens) on dive bombers then speed.
-
I feel the need to add that dive bombers drop too few bombs to have such bad rng, if they were HE it wouldn't matter, they'd do damage wherever they fall, but AP needs to hit vital parts of ship just like surface ships ap shells to do any considerable damage. Maybe revert the dispersion to what it was before the nerf but reduce the maximum damage? And rockets could also either get a speed or health buff, the way they are now even tier 7 ships rip them apart with continuous dps(not flak, I can dodge flak) so fast that I often can't even commence an attack

Is this how CVs are intended to be "balanced"?
Filipin00 replied to KielYourself's topic in General Discussion
I've been reading this and I've came to a conclusion. Lot of CV players (even I when I do play CV) do only 1 or 2 attacks instead of full 3-4 attacks that are possible, using the rest of the planes as cannon fodder. The solution would be then to simply increase per fixed % plane damage reduction for every plane less in the attacking squadron while simultaneously nerf either damage or chance to cause sinking/fire or both. -

Sources for this info? If you post something like this, please provide an official source from which you've read that I have GZ and I hope this isn't fake news because I got real excited -
If you don't have it, don't get it. The biggest waste of money in its current state. AP bombs(dive bombers) literally, LITERALLY, can't even pen anything, only overpens, bounces or ricochets, and even if you pen something you get like ~2k dmg, and one in a million drops you get citadel for a whooping 7k damage. Overall, 50:50 if the bombs are gonna connect at all, half of the times they just casually drop on the sides even when aiming some battleships, let alone cruisers........
-
Russian armor? Oh the non-existent one like on pyotr velikiy or izmail?
-
DON'T give them ideas!!
-
Exactly, because wherever the HE bombs hit they explode on impact and deal splash damage and do fires AP bombs NEED to both hit AND penetrate vital parts of a ship to do any significant damage. FFS people have started making fun of me when they see me play my GZ, and they have every right to do so, the damage output is a joke.
