No matter what I tried to do I was failing to log into battles on Saturday (and yesterday) - counter tripped down, but battle never started, had to restart the client each time to get into the battle, so consistently arrived 30-60 seconds into the battle itself - gave up in the end. IN most afk situations the "overenthusiastic" players would have reported/booted/punished me through no fault of my own. I have a good PC and a 100mb broadband connection, so not much else I can do. While it can be annoying, the actual count of fully afk players is very small (but then I do not play many marathon sessions so it is an occasional occurrence only for me).

hi 1) Indeed they were, just some basic research by you will see that. Classic example - Jellico's turn away during Jutland - that wasn't to avoid BB's, that was to avoid a potential mass DD torpedo launch. We get too wrapped up with small actions in WW2, maybe 10-15 ships per side in most, fleet combats as envisaged and planned for during WW1 (and interwar) included mass torpedo launching by DD's against battlelines. 2) Indeed, lots of capital ship casualties caused by submarines, but none in combat. Capital ships (and all other ship types) were, by and large, immune to submarines if they maintained 20+knots. Homing torpedo's changed that to a degree, but they are 'top tier' stuff for WoWs. And while yes, I might be an 'old git' in game terms, but that just means that I had an interest in the topic prior to game being launched :) [and still enjoy it hugely - usually]

I only bother with type 5 and ship specific ones - have a pile of special cammo's but not used any yet as saving those for T9's that have no unique cammo for themselves.

Not defending it but.... http://theoatmeal.com/comics/online_gaming

Actually, all of them - their purpose was to sink capital ships using torpedo's. Torpedo Boats->Torpedo Boat Destroyers->Destroyers is the chain of events. The fact that DD's were used to escort convoys and sink submarines is an distraction from their main role - which is why Destroyer Escorts, Frigates, Sloops, Corvettes, armed trawlers etc were used for escorting convoys much more than actual Destroyers themselves. A DD is a lot of ship for submarine hunting, but much less so than cruisers, BB's or CV's (and much more common).

Great Naval Battles - North Atlantic attempted that, although the submarines were abstracted. Great little game for it's day. Although the RN campaign could be quite tedious, just waiting around for the Kriegsmarine to send out raiders. http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/200/Great+Naval+Battles+-+North+Atlantic+1939-1943.html

forum burp.

That didn't surprise me, although how far down did - and I play CV's far too little to even contemplate participating in 'balancing' them, never mind trying to get them to work as intended.

BB queue's were about 2 mins over the weekend - took my shiny new T3/4/5 RN BB's out for 1 spin each then didn't bother with BB's anymore.
-
I drove mine over the weekend and didn't see the bug...only 1 battle though.

A weekend I wished I had stayed away from the game - my summary of my experience over the weekend (although I finally unlocked the Neptune, my first T9, which I couldn't get my head around, which didn't help).

The only time that submarines were used in a tactical combat was at the start of WW1 - The battle of Heligoland Bight - during which they shot at ships from both sides and were shot at by ships from both sides. And they achieved diddly squat. They are not fast enough There could be no IFF (identify friend from foe) Subs in a tactical combat are rubbish (until you get to modern nuke boats who can communicate with their surface ships, which is still a very limited manner). They are the ultimate solo warrior type and no place in a team game. But it's a game. yes you could balance the subs by giving them all sorts of unrealistic stats and yes, IFF would not be a problem (green/red). But, the maps do not have underwater geography, not all ships have sonar or depth charges or other ASW capabilities. Sorry mate, you are late to the game, this has been hashed to death so many times it is unreal - but no doubt will raise it's ugly head every so often. Most of what are listed as possibilities only happened late WW2, which is T9/T10 stuff in game, so what about the rest of the tiers. The RN had the best attempts at fast submarines in the early years (K class, steam powered subs, complete disaster and also R class, which might have worked well, if peace hadn't broken out for WW1). No, no and NO, more NO's...

Out of all the games I played over the weekend I had only 2 that were straight forward; all the others involved me being stuck at the 'joining battle' screen - counter had expired but I failed to connect into the battle - had to restart client every time to get into the battle, which is time consuming and a potential (major) disadvantage for the team if playing a DD.

Dasha!

WG support team surrounded by the playbase today :)
-
That's in the update bug thread and will be fixed in the next micro patch in a couple of weeks time.

WG servers today .... ;)

This guy will offer advice...
-
Fixed for you :) OP - sounds like a case of, "when afk use screen lock" situation, sorry mate, but totally 'user error'.

Looks like they were testing the set up for the coming Halloween PvE on the map and forgot to remove some of it :)

Excellent idea, really, a good idea - I am sure that the only reason we have a distorted horizontal dispersion pattern is to increase hit numbers on broadside targets, this has created an issue with hitting bow on targets. But implementing your suggestion would 'fix' 2 issues, easy cruiser deletion by BB's and also make bow on tactics less attractive. Initially the game tried to use shallow and deep water (so BB's could not use shallow water), but this was unplayable on a practical basis. If a ship can go into the water than so can a torpedo. The effect of 'deep water' torps is that when (if) they hit then they miss the main armour protection of the target, while diving under shallow draft ships. In principle I like the idea as long as you can change types in game and not just in harbour.

Hood was an integral part of the Bismarck campaign and that had a collection (special missions for Hood only within the campaign itself).

Reminds me of some of the (very) early computer games....
