Roma - Tier VIII Premium Italian BB suggestion

    How about no.

Let's talk French battleships a bit...

Historically, yes no. It turns out I was wrong, checking the data, the Italian is better at range. In game, I don't know for sure but so far WG has been kind of consistent with real life when it comes to penetration values (or rather their comparative relation). Checking the tables I have also discovered something rather odd. I was Schroedinger's dataman: I was right AND wrong. The French made shells have better initial pen than the Italian, while the US shells hold pen better. Weird. The dropoff point in pen for the French against the Italians is at 6kyd, where the pen starts to favour the Italians. Effective pen in "/mm against British cemented armour (UK weapon with Supercharges for comparison's sake, FR is the french-made shell, US is the US-made shell) Range FR 380/45 FR FR 380/45 US IT 381/50 DE 380/52 UK 15"/42 SC 0 32,9" / 835,7mm 30,8" / 792,3mm 31,9"/ 810,3mm 31,1" / 789,9mm 30,5" / 774,7mm 6kyd (5.5km) 26,9" / 683,3mm 26,7" / 678,2mm 27,2" / 690,9mm 25,8" / 655,3mm 25,2" / 640,1mm 12kyd (11km) 21,7" / 551,2mm 22,7" / 576,6mm 22,9" / 581,7mm 21,2" / 538,5mm 20,5" / 520,7mm 20kyd (18.2km) 16,3" / 414mm 17,5" / 444,5mm 18,2" / 462,3mm 16,3" / 414mm 15,9" / 403,9mm Source One (two) other thing(s) to note: The German gun easily underperforms both the French and Italian ones so if someone tells you that they had the best guns, check the relevant box on your sheet of Wehrabingo and flatly tell them to F off. The 15"/42 holds up remarkably well despite its age, even if it admitedly has to make use of supercharges to "keep up". <off> I think Vaguard would be pretty okay using the guns with SC to stay competitive at T8 </off>

Thank you for the link, very helpful!

380mm/45 guns* Guns that had the best penetration of any gun in that calibre class, better than the Italian 381mm/50 and German 380mm/52. Can't overmatch stuff? Who cares, 12 guns. (sidenote: you should pull yourself out of your "but Flamu said" bubble, it's annoying)

Well, I can't really check, but I believe 8" cruisers retain the higher velocity HE throughout the entire line (would be interesting to compare for example Baltimore's and Des Moines' HE and AP shell times on an ingame timer. From what I remember, the HE shells on B-more are indeed slightly faster). One example that comes to mind immediately would be Yorck that even had a video made on it. May very well be a thing imo. In the game the velocities are translated to server ticks, so the difference may not be as dramatic as it seems in writing.

    New US Cruiser line :)

Well, historically, the 6"/47 fired bog standard HE rounds but was issued with nothing else than superheavy AP rounds (823 m/s HE and 762 m/s AP). The 8"/55 guns of the USN had two types of AP: 280 lbs Mk 19 mod 1-6 that had 830-ish muzzle velocity and 335 lbs Mk 21 mod 1-6 (?) that had 762-ish muzzle velocity. Any ship before Baltimore was unable to fire the superheavy AP mainly due to size contraints (ie. the hoists and the trays could not physically fit the projectiles) while all the 6"/47-armed CL's were designed from the onset with the superheavy projectiles in mind. In practical terms that should mean that the HE shells are as flat-flying as Pepsicola's and NOrleans' AP, while the AP is arcing like the AP on B-more and Des Memes.

When people say you are letting your team down, they mean the 11 other people on your random team.

Big Gunned Heavy Cruisers Discussion Thread.

I severely doubt that. Moskva and HIV haven't made any of the 8" armed cruisers redundant. The release of Stalingrad would threaten Moskva and HIV if anyone, and I'm not even sure about that to be completely honest. I would really like to get my hands on a Stalingrad and then eventually an Alaska and even farther down the line B-65. Their playstyle and stregths will be significantly different to the 8" cruisers currently implemented. Remember how people said Zao/Senjo would become obsolete when Hindenburg was being released? That hasn't happened. How they said HIV would be rubbish in comparison to Moskva? Nope, outdamages it. Only time will tell, but I doubt that conventional cruisers will be massively overshadowed. Sure, you can expect grossly higher winrate from the new ship, but you have to consider that the ship will land in the hands of highly competent players with lots of experience.

Random battles hardlz if ever will display any sort of leadership, and there is no such thing as "nominating a leader". Most usually "blobs" will form, which go in one or another likely direction, depending on the map. Ideally what you should do is pick a side, where some opther ships of your team go to, and support them. You should try to pick a position based on the stregths and weaknesses of the ship you are in. You also need to learn basic mechanics (spotting - concealment, shelltypes, angling, damage dealing, damage saturation, etc) which can be learned through youtube videos and the official wiki page. Ranked battles are usually no better than randoms (as they are basically the same, but with a 7v7 setup and higher rewards), but the chance for coordination there is higher than in a run-of-the-mill random battle. If you really want to learn, you'll need to find a more experienced friend who can advise you, and if you are looking for actual organised play, you'll need to find a clan or a team that will take you in. I would offer to help you, but I can't really do that at the moment due to my PC frying... Hope you'll turn out to be a competent player eventually, it would make the server just that small bit less sucky. Good luck!

Just because you have a uni degree, it doesn't mean you are smart enough to instantly or at all understand the game mechanics (as clearly demonstrated by your statistics). People here told you to stick to the low tiers so that you can learn the game, learn to play it and not mess up other people's time (who don't want to have incompetent players in their team). Based on you "somewhat" arrogant answer, you are not the kind of player that should ever play anything else than coop and especially not in high tier.

So the Russian bias is real

Oh yeah, I'm not saying for a minute that full leather armour sets were worn, just saying that it had protective value. I think most people don't refer to a full set of "leather armour" when they use that term.

    New US Cruiser line :)

@Affeks @fumtu Re ballistics: assuming that the ballistics gimp Cleveland has on her HE shells goes away (at least partially), Dallas could have a rather viable HE spam option. The HE shells were lighter and faster than the AP shells (which were superheavy), giving them a shorter time to target. Cleveland had her HE matched to her AP shells in game for gameplay purposes only AFAIK because of how OP the flatter and faster shells were (faster means more accurate and 12 shots of HE being too accurate is just mean).

So the Russian bias is real

I think that there actually was some hardened leather protective gear. One USMC nickname, "leathernecks", comes from the leather collar of USMC infantry that was worn to protect from sabre slashes in a boarding action. If I rember correctly.

Bringing Kitakami back - with deepwater torpedos

Oh it was 10 quad launchers? I never had a Kitakami, I thought it was 8 quintuples. Oh well, same broadside, so I guess it's alright.

Bringing Kitakami back - with deepwater torpedos

Do you know what IMHO means? I think that she could actually make a return, as a purely fun ship, with the proposed IJN DW torps she'd be a purely support and support dependent ship.
  18. piritskenyer

Bringing Kitakami back - with deepwater torpedos

Yeah. She could put out 20 torps to any one side with 8 quintuple launchers (4 on each side)

Bringing Kitakami back - with deepwater torpedos

Just reading the title gave me a serious giggle. I really don't know what to say. Given that her gun armament is a grand total of 4x 5.5" (140mm) guns, of which only 3 can be ever trained at any given target in the forward and broadside arc (and none rearward), I think she would be royally screwed if she was engaged by a destroyer or another cruiser. The BB/CV only DW torps may not be the best tool for this ship, as a T8 CA/CL (and even most DD's) would simply overpower her with noo difficulty whatsoever.

So the Russian bias is real

I was mainly referring to the fact that both Katanas and European swords (of which, btw, there were a crapton of types, so simply calling them European swords is kind of incorrect) had a large variety in both size, craftmanship and quality. Pitching a scottich broadsword against a low quality Katana would be just as unfair as taking a well-made Katana and pitching it against a second rate sabre.
  21. piritskenyer

So the Russian bias is real

That is a rather broad generalisation. What Katana and what European sword? There are loads of different types of both...
  22. piritskenyer

So the Russian bias is real

Not a bug. Damage saturation. A game mechanic. The stern of the ship ran out of HP and any further damage inflicted to it didn't go towards reducing the total health pool of the ship, since there was no HP to take Just because you don't like this mechanic, it doesn't mean it's a bug or that it will go away. People with enough skill (ie not me ) can do what is called "saturation tanking" where they keep soaking up hits into their saturated section (you can only have one saturated section, if you have two, you have ran out of total HP), and thus avoiding taking any further damage overall. The danger of that is that whenever you have a saturated section you are already low on HP and a lucky hit to another section may kill you. Healing when having a saturated section will heal the section's HP partially as well, practically "unsaturating" it, making it able to once again take damage. You may then saturate the section again, making it unable to take further damage once again, but I'm yet to see someone be *that* lucky or good.

Any news about upcomming french battleships?

You guys should stop relying on ultra competitive reviewers to decide wether some ship is fun or not. Flamu doesn't give a toss about wether a ship is fun or not when he reviews something, he cares abput wether something can directly compete with the best ship of its tier and class. Not saying this to chew you or anything, but if you always listen to youtubers when making a choice, you'll be missing out on quite a lot of experiences.
