If it would be the ship as a rewards, it would be shown. And why to show the name of the ship with the commander? Because it is always like that, when the commander is trained for certain one. And as described Leroy Jenkins served on USS Kidd IRL, so of course he is trained for this particular ship. But you can use him on any other US premium/special ship without need of retraining.

It is always difficult to try to stay as historic and realistic as possible at the same time as the gameplay is still interesting and fun. Of course there are plenty arcady stuff in game, which really helps for better gameplay experience. Too realistic modes are doable in some racing games, or flying, if you have VR and proper gear for that...
