Weekend specials \ ship discounts \ port discounts
krazypenguin replied to krazypenguin's topic in Newcomers' Section
Well, I managed to unlock the Kongo, only played 1 game in tonight (to get the x3 XP) but already I can tell I am going to like it. Best of all though, thanks to the weekend special, I saved 1,320,000 credits. -

Don't get me wrong, the Kawachi is not good, but the turret layout means that you can steam towards a target, at an angle (so not having to expose your broadsides), whilst still getting 3 turrets to bear. (Or even 4 if the angle allows the rear turret to bear) You can then swing the bow left or right to expose the 2 side turrets on the other side of the hull - doesn't necessarily give you a higer rate of fire, but it does mean that you can maneuver as you wish and still shoot stuff. In the Myogi (based on my admittedly very limited experience so far) you get 1 front turret and 2 rear ones. All 3 suffer from very slow traverse. So, when you are sailing toward an enemy you can only get 1 turret to bear unless you angle enough to let the 2 rear turrets show. That's fine in itself, but the turret rotation is so abysmally slow that there's no way those 2 rear turrets can track a target if it crosses your bow (because the rear turrets would have to swing all the way around) so you are effectively locked into a course. Also, the only real option for maneuver then becomes to turn away from the target and that means exposing your broadside which is, apparently, a big no-no in this game. Anyway, I'm only 4 games into the Myogi and I still need to unlock the final hull so maybe things will get better. Either way, I hear the Kongo is a monster and that's what I am aiming for. On topic, as a new player, I am glad to see this special - decent discounts on low tiers can be a big help for newbies like me. -

Yeah, but no chance I'll reach them this weekend. Played 4 games today in the Myogi (1 win and 3 very frustrating losses) and still need about 22k to unlock the Kongo - but not able to play again until tomorrow. Will activate some XP bonus flags for tomorrow's x3 and see if I can reach the Kongo. P.S. I never thought I would say this, but the Myogi makes the Kawachi look good... ;-) -
Aiming to get the Kongo this weekend on 50% sale if I can grind past the Myogi. What is the ARP Kongo though please? Saw one today for the first time - how do you get it (assuming you even can...)? Edit - never mind, googled it ;-)

Yeah, it's mainly about the ports. I had this crazy idea of playing just the Japanese tech tree and keeping every single ship in it, until I've got all of them in my port. To do that, I would need about 50 ports. Also, I would be deprived of the satisfaction of selling the Kawachi, and I am not sure I can resist that ;-) -
Specific example isn't ideal as ship silhouettes are similar enough that people will mix them up and there aren't enough different ones (so botters will simply program them in) but the idea of visual captcha is probably the best. E.g. here are 6 pictures, click on which ones contain item X. Make the list of possible items quite long, and randomise the number of pictures that match and their location etc.. and that should defeat the bots... at least until they figure out how to beat it. Question is, do people want to have to do that more than they don't want to play with bots? Personally, I would be happy with it. That said, the example that Kpt highlights is so blatant that WG should just instantly ban those 20 accounts, and I would say even try and block the IP of whoever made/played them.

Thanks both. Shame, I seem to recall that low tier tank discounts were offered pretty much every weekend when I started playing WoT over 3 years ago. I guess WG want the WoWS player base to mature a little more slowly or something. In that case, I probably just buy one tier 4 for now and alternate playing that with my Yubari for the moment. Don't worry _Kyoshi - I don't plan to play any premium ships of a higher tier than I have unlocked. But if the Atago does get a discount in the mean time, it would make sense to grab it :-) -
Well, I elited it last night and, if I'm totally honest, I didn't completely hate it by the end, probably because my teams won 4 games in a row, which always makes things a lot better. Also, I made sure that I stuck with allied cruisers and refused to show my broadsides which seemed to help a little. Anyway, happy to have finished with it I then watched iChase's Japanese BB tech tree review ( ) where he says that, whilst the Kawachi is terrible, the Myogi is even worse! Ah well, at least I know that things will be better in the CA and DD lines and there's always the Kongo to look forward to at tier 5. That said, having elited all of my tier 3 Japanese ships, I now need WG to give us a discount on tier 4s before I buy my next 3 ships. Might grind some credits and get my captain some experience in the Yubari in the meantime :-)

PSA: World of Warships showmatch at The Grand Finals
krazypenguin replied to MrConway's topic in General Discussion
Good luck to the team - enjoy the event and have a fun game. I don't watch eSports but I shall definitely watch this match. Something that I think that a lot of people here are missing, is that this is an exhibition game, not a competitive one. It's designed to be fun and showcase the game - I think it's way more important that people are shown to be having fun playing the game, than being massively serious about it and meta-gaming the heck out of it. Have fun people. -
"What can burn inside a ship unless it is fuel or ammo?" Pretty much anything and everything. There's a load of wood on ships, there's wires, there are electrics, ropes, nettings/canvas, there are (despite your bizarre comment that ready to use ammo isn't there) TONS of ready to use ammo stored all around the ship, outside of magazines. Think about it. With the rate of fire of AA guns how do you think they fire more than 1 or 2 bursts without having to reload for 10 minutes as the crew run to a magazine to get more ammo? There are metal lockers ALL OVER the superstructure which hold spare ammo... Heck, once a fire catches even the PAINT on a ship can burn... To answer your poll questions. I use HE when playing a cruiser if I am shooting a DD. I use it to start a fire on a CV or BB then switch to AP. But I am a newbie so I might be doing it wrong. Do i find that my BB burns a lot? Yes, but I only have the Kawachi at the moment so that doesn't mean anything.

Welcome aboard and good luck!

Thanks for everyone's replies. I tried a few suggestions last night but just couldn't get the ship to perform and didn't have any fun playing it. I still refuse to free XP past it, so I think it's just going to be a case of suffering playing it for the odd daily double in it until I have unlocked the tier 4. I plan on keeping the tier 3 Japanese cruiser and destroyer because I find them fun to play, but the Kawachi will be sold as soon as I'm done with it.

New to these forums so don't recognize many people yet (other than a few familiar faces from WoT - hello bushwacker001 above ^) but whilst browsing another thread just now I noticed a familiar name right at the bottom of the page in the "x user(s) are reading this topic" section - namely _Necropoliz_ I remember the name because a) I have an old live role playing shield with the word necropolis on it and b) _Necropoliz_ was on my team last night and not only carried us hard but gave me some solid advice and support. _Necropoliz_was in a tier 3 cruiser (didn't see what one) whilst I was in my Watakake. Map was Straits Somalian Somolon Solomon: _Necropoliz_, myself and another cruiser captured point A and then pushed up round the corner. We met a cruiser or battleship and between the 3 of us sank it, then _Necropoliz_ told me to run up the 1/2 line to find the enemy carrier lurking up there and that he would support me. On the way an enemy cruiser tried to chase me down (good luck with that, I was boosting all the way!) whilst _Necropoliz_ provided support. Figuring that the cruiser chasing me was going to be a problem eventually, I turned briefly to chuck a couple of torpedo spreads his way to try and force him to turn away, then returned to concentrating on trying to set fire to the enemy Hosho to shut down his flight deck. A few seconds later my torpedoes connected with the enemy cruiser and he sank. I made a mess of my attack on the carrier and someone else got him but the result was the same. Meanwhile, most of the rest of our team had died as a powerful surface force had swung around C and wiped them out. So we had our carrier, _Necropoliz_, another cruiser and my DD versus 4, 5 or maybe even 6 enemy ships - definitely 1 of which was a DD and the rest were (I think) cruisers. We held point A but they had B and C. _Necropoliz_ told me to take C whilst he steamed straight into B, where their DD was lurking and their entire fleet was heading. I genuinely expected him to get blown to pieces before he could do anything but he not only killed the enemy DD but also took out a cruiser, all whilst trying to warn our carrier that he was too close to the enemy. Sadly, our carrier either didn't notice or couldn't do anything about it and was sunk, but not before his planes managed to take out another enemy ship. _Necropoliz_ capped out B before finally succumbing to enemy fire and sinking, whilst I capped C and with many enemy ships sunk all 3 caps circles under our control the battle quickly ended. A really fun game, made all the more enjoyable by someone with a bit more experience offering support and guidance, First thing I did when the game was over was send him a compliment :-) -
Some newbie questions: ammo types and torpedo spread settings
krazypenguin posted a topic in Newcomers' Section
Howdy, Need a little advice\guidance please! :-) I played a little when the game was in beta but not enough to really learn some of the more advanced concepts before drifting away. Returned this week, determined to at least unlock and elite the Japanese DD, CA and BB lines up to tier 5. I am currently on tier 3 in all of them and closing in on tier 4. Problem is that I am getting on a bit now and the days when I could instantly remember everything and effortlessly pick things up seem to have passed me by. As such, I like things to be as simple and easy as possible as I more slowly learn and remember the rules, even if that means I am not playing as well as I could so. As such, I need help with ammo types and torpedo settings. 1 - What ammo type to fire from each type of ship at each type of target? Based on my reading of the wiki and some of the guides in this section I made the below table. On the understanding that it's generic and covers most situations, not every possible instance, and that I am currently planning on playing up to tier 5, does this look right to people? 2 - What torpedo spread setting is, again generally speaking, best to use? I read a thread that said that a tight spread is probably better because at long distance the torpedoes are still reasonably close together and therefore harder to avoid, whilst a wide spread at long range ends up with the torpedoes very far apart, making them much easier to avoid. However, at the same time, unless you are very good at aiming, it seems that a tight spread is probably more likely to completely miss at long range, whereas a wider spread might still catch the target with a hit. Probably a case of both spreads having advantages and disadvantages, but I'd appreciate people's thoughts and opinions please. Some additional questions: 3 - Do torpdeoes have a minimum ARMING distance? The wiki mentions a minimum aiming distance, but that's not the same thing. If I am sailing parallel to an enemy ship at a few metres distance and I fire torpedoes, will they still damage him? 4 - Is the reload time for torpedoes always the same? I'm not sure why, but I have some vague feeling that maybe after the first couple of salvoes it takes longer to reload torpedoes - probably just because by then I'm in the thick of battle and desperate for the reload, but I just wanted to check. 5 - Do warships have unlimited ammo for main guns and unlimited torpedoes? Remember, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers (except this question, but I still need to ask it.) Thanks, krazypenguin -
Thanks - so do you think that it makes sense to try to push in to close range (e.g. within secondary range) before turning broadside? I've seen some threads where people seem to indicate that a ship which is broadside on is more vulnerable, whilst one sailing dead on is less so. Typically, as soon as I am within range I turn to expose as many guns as possible..

The problem is that our default "posts per page" setting is set to the default for the site - and the site default is unlimited. So we just get one long page of posts. To manually fix this, click on your name in the top right corner of the page and choose My Settings Now click on Forums (this is just above Profile "Settings", to the right of Settings) Change the "Number of posts to show for each topic page" - I set mine to 40. Done! Screenshot of what you need to do!

Very true and often overlooked points - have a +1 :-) At a tactical level there are a couple of other considerations: The lack of speed - with a top speed of around 27 knots these ships were not fast enough to operate with the Japanese fleet carriers and would have been at a disadvantage against US battleships who could have used their generally superior speeds to dictate the terms of any engagement. Less effective radar\fire control - I don't know much about this area at all but from what I've seen, the general consensus is that the Japanese radar systems were less effective than the American ones and anything that affects your ability to hit the target is obviously very important. Once they got themselves organised, the Americans repeatedly demonstrated that superior radar and fire control systems were battle winners. So yes, great armour and big guns, but low top speed and a disadvantage in fire control. The prevailing opinion on most battleship forums on the web is that the US battleships, especially the latest ones like the Iowa class, would wipe the floor with the Yamato But those are combat considerations. On a more strategic level, and obviously with the benefit of hindsight, things are even worse. The Japanese simply never should have started building the things in the first place. The three hulls (Yamato, Musashi & Shinano) used up vast amounts of Japan's precious and scarce steel, not to mention dockyards and manpower - all of which would clearly have been much better used building decent fleet carriers. Shinano's conversion to a "heavy support" carrier was pointless - her air complement was very small by contemporary standards (roughly 50% of a regular fleet carrier) and in any case she wasn't ready until far too late in the war. She also suffered from the same fuel and speed considerations or at least would have had she not been sunk whilst transferring to Kure before completion. A final consideration...both the Yamato and Musashi are often said to have absorbed tremendous amounts of punishment before going down - partly because they really were just very big and tough and partly because they continued to be attacked when they were clearly finished. Whilst it is undoubtedly true that they could absorb a lot of punishment, it's also true that even a fraction of the damage they received would have been enough to put them out of comission for months, if not years (given the availability of fuel to transfer them and steel and workers to repair them). So as strategic weapons they were an extremely poor return on their cost. But man do they look good :-)

And now China are building aircraft carriers...

Falathi, on 19 June 2013 - 01:51 PM, said: Interesting note here: initially the US military was furious about the result of the battle and was blaming Spruance for his fleet performing below expectations. Why, you ask? Right after the battle the US had confirmed information of the destruction of Hiyo so it seemed that with all the effort the Japanese managed to run away, losing just one small aircraft carrier. It was much later that they realized that Taiho and Shokaku, hit by the US subs were also lost. BTW This battle has shown the vast difference in quality of Japanese aircraft and their crews in comparison to the US Navy of that time. Generally, Ozawa was playing his best in this battle but this issue has rendered him helpless. Poor Spruance. One of the most intelligent and thoughtful Admirals the US Navy ever possessed and he always got criticised for his perceived lack of aggression. The reality was that he simply saw a much bigger, strategic even, picture than many others saw. Such a shame that he wasn't in command during the Battle of Leyte Gulf where he would have undoubtedly performed better than Halsey and saved a lot of lives.

What is your favourite warship you want in the game???
krazypenguin replied to sot159's topic in Other
I'll take any Japanese Heavy Cruiser. Not only do those things look amazing but they were totally awesome in real life. Amazingly fast, well armoured, durable and very hard hitting. Fantastic vessels. This is the IJN Chikuma which was sunk at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944:
