Hasley on Forrest Sherman : builds and modules?
Karkong_the_Impaler replied to Charles__Vane__'s topic in General Discussion
You don't need concealment in my opinion. You're either smoked, radared or hydro'd. You also suck at "dealing with DDs", you're just ok at defending against DDs, sitting in your smoke - at least while hydro isn't on cooldown especially when they show broadside, but only if they stumble into your hydro (see above). Or someone else spots them, then you can bring down the hurt on them. Plant your behind in the cap (when there is no radar around, never go anywhere dangerous if you don't know where the radar cruisers are), make sure someone else spots the enemy, smoke up, farm them untill they die or run. Do start hydro at least 20 secs after you smoked up. Do never stand broadside, always at an angle with the bow to your friends and run if someone charges you - 2/3 of your firepower is in the rear and if you only show the stern, you receive much less damage by virtue of dispersion. I feel the Sherman is more like a semi mobile gun turret than a DD, if the french DDs are baguettes, it's a flaccid toast in comparison. You go cap, then retreat and farm from behind an island. I don't need RPF, getting into an open water gunfight with anything more dangerous than harmless is dangerous. Rather stay with the team. -
Why are some players hiding statistics?

Yeah. And it was of paramount importance to me that he values my opinions! But still, I really think he's a nice guy and deserves all the best in life. Alas... -

I've rarely seen such a hilarious self own. I applaud you, OP, this made my day. I mean, you set quite a low bar at 45% and still manage to skill limbo it yourself. And not by a small margin. On a more serious side note, I propose you post a replay. I'm not the best player myself, but I'd watch it and give you some feedback to learn from. And should you grow a pair and actually do this, please don't curate, just pick two or three at random, wins, losses, I don't care. I'll even try not to laugh too hard at your missplays - but if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. You can also stay in your reality filter bubble where you're a super unicum in disguise, just held back at a trash level by RNG matchmaking and bad luck - it's up to you and the same to me. Edit: I support your idea of limiting leagues by skill level, just make the rewards reflect that the good players don't have to stomp over the bad ones to get to gold. Win rate is a crutch, as for example it takes your games five years ago into account, but it's okish enough as an indicator for skill. -

You don't need astronomical samples when you accept that there is an error. The less samples, the bigger the error. No, win rate isn't going to be an absolute value, I've won against way - on average - better players than I am in extremely disadvantageous circumstances in a one on one (also the other way around, though I don't want to talk about that). At least I am far enough on the Dunning-Kruger curve that I can appreciate someone better than me handing me my behind and I choose to believe that I can or at least try to learn from that. Now, being toxic towards someone who just killed you and, say, crying cheater, well - I personally appreciate that as the compliment it is. Being toxic towards your potato teammates is like being mad at your dice. Yes, I also click that trash floatsam consisting of four BBs, one cruiser and a shimakaze hiding behind an island and "well done" them, mostly to motivate them to actually help, because I assume that most of them don't even look at the minimap while in binocular view and thus don't even realize what kind of bovine excrement they're producing. And then there is the that guy who posts screenshots of his games in bronze ranked and claims anyone but him are "useless bastards". Those in his team, of course, "a waste of time and space".... I don't know, I mind that most. Remember kids, you're only part of the team when you are winning... -
Which forum members have you seen in random battles?
Karkong_the_Impaler replied to Cobra6's topic in General Discussion
Well, no match is ever dull in a Colbert and I was a tiny bit scared when I charged that Elbing. And I somehow can't even blame the Denly fleeing from the both of you. Neither can the CV be everywhere at the same time and the natural instinct of a BB under fire is to go for the border. It was a weird mix of very good and very bad players and plays and I see my own mistakes clearly in hindsight - I should have continued to A and helped clear the flank when C was so obviously lost, instead of raining on that Desmo using the minimap with little to no impact and anything after that was too little too late. But yeah, when the DD is behind the BBs and they are behind the CV, it's the end times, you can't recover from that. -

No, it isn't. You just need more samples. I already said so, didn't I? But on the other hand, you should discard old data. So there is a bit of uncertainty - but you're not a sekrit unicum, hobbled by circumstances all of a sudden. -

Karkong_the_Impaler replied to Skitzo_Sam's topic in General Discussion
Not necessarily, if you're in an at best average clan. Ask me how I know. Yes, teamspeak helps a bit. A div of three unicums skew the results simply being guranteed on the same side, the coordination is just an added bonus. One of the disadvantages of the tools I'm using, I can't filter that. Also I bashed you for agreeing with that person who blamed others forcing him to be toxic while being insulting in the same sentence all the while not being able to pass bronze. True enough, especially concerning the resulting toxicity, yeah, you are right. But I have to admit that if they're being called "idiots" for their admittedly idiotic play, I don't feel offended on their behalf. But if you're a bad player yourself, I think it's worse when you blame and flame other players. I mean, I've been called out why I didn't push and tank in my BB. I was playing Slava. True. -

Karkong_the_Impaler replied to Skitzo_Sam's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, no. The average is 36000 and around that value you get a Gauss distribution with an interval from 10 000 to 62 000 You just have more variables. Yes, the win rate is fraught with uncertainties, because, say, some people don't play on what we assume to be more average weekends. But it's not nearly as much as the average people think who consider them basically very good players who are just held back by stupid matchmaking. The most relevant is probably all that garbage data from five years (?) ago when one started playing wows - that plainly isn't relevant anymore to judge someones skill today. Or stats padding in a tryhard division, when you meet that person solo. Or unicum sealclubbers at tier 10, smoking up when someone radars them... -

Toxicity in this game is ridiculous
Karkong_the_Impaler replied to Skitzo_Sam's topic in General Discussion
Well, assuming no one stops playing and no fresh players come, for every 53% player, there needs to be a 47% player. That's what I said about the random influences, they even out - What remains is your influence. Yes, maybe it's harder to make your play count when everyone else is just rolling their face on the keyboard, when you play on "weekend" because you can't fight all that atrocious play from the randoms of doom you have been dealt - but assuming everyone else has these problems, that also evens out, it will probably nudge everyones winrate towards the average. I hope you don't look for a career in statistics.... -
How about DD missions with floodings or fires? That's just disrespectful towards the poor Druid. No, ramming is not an option.

Karkong_the_Impaler replied to Varian_Dorn's topic in General Discussion
Too complicated. Borderhumping isn't ususally an offensive maneuver, it's a desperate attempt to survive. Happens to everyone. If you increase the damage taken by a factor of four, the fleeing player can deceide - do the kevin (aka gamer turn) or take the quadruple damage. But you can't hump and survive long, especially with cornered DDs that can take too long to kill. Too long as in "binding too many forces" -

I think ships are different enough to warrant this. I suck in Shima (not the least because the last time I played it was years ago), but ignoring me in a Druid is a mistake. Overall stats and/or class stats are skewed by too many factors, especially seal clubbing, the age of the respective results and so on that they're a crutch at best. For best results take only the last few hundred games in that ship, solo if they're alone, just with divmates when divisioned up. -

Karkong_the_Impaler replied to Skitzo_Sam's topic in General Discussion
Ok, I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong. https://academo.org/demos/dice-roll-statistics/ Set it to two or more dice and let it run for a few minutes. The results will invariably look like a gauss distribution. This is the same in say.. matchmaking. You have the stronger team, the others have the stronger team, but on average it evens out. You have a good day, you have a bad day, it evens out. What remains is an average of your ability. Just FYI, with a 60% win rate, you don't carry 6 out of 10 games, because 50% swing your way anyway. You just have the skill to influence 1 of 10 games which would have been otherwise lost, and that is substantial. This will just happen randomly. 10 losses in a row and nothing you could have done? Happens. 20 wins? That, too. -
All is filtered and the weeb stuff is turned off. I still get "ship smasha", which is not helpful if you want to memorize the basic abilities of the ships around you.

Hmmm... not sure here. Yes, most of the time you are right, especially unicums and suchlike, but I for example play ships and focus on killing DDs, because a gaggle of BBabies leftover just run for A1 if there is one friendly DD surviving. I'm at a solid 61% (solo) at ~800 games with the Druid which is by all means a meaningful sample size - but there are many better players than I am, with even worse PR https://wows-numbers.com/ship/3760076752,Druid/?order=max_frags__desc#leaderboard Probably because enough play this ship as a farmer instead. -

Aaaand if you now understand that anything random is at an average of ~50%, the only influence left over is... YOU! Lots of randomness? Need a bigger sample size. But that's about it. -
Toxicity in this game is ridiculous
Karkong_the_Impaler replied to Skitzo_Sam's topic in General Discussion
Say, is this a write only thread? Do you posess the education to understand statistics and understand what a sample size is? I admit this is not primary school math but not impossible to understand. Yes, we're lacking some tools to better discern skill, say, a moving average filter because at least I don't care about my opponents stats two years ago or when he started out learning the ship, but we use the tools we're given. Here, see the effect of a small sample size yourself. When you just started out, that spike. You didn't suddenly get better and then worse again. To see that, look at the trend, the basic direction the curve takes, you're slowly getting better with more experience, but you "coose to believe" you're an unicum already an only the team is dragging you down. Stop making excuses and git gud. -
