    280 - 300 mm guns : AP or HE ?

Thank you....now i begin to understand what is happening with the AP damage spikes i'm seeing on angled targets. But then it becomes pretty hard to decide what to use is it not ? Do i shoot a target with (IF)HE for ~1100 pretty reliable damage per hitting shell on most of it's plating at any angle and a chance on a ( most often short ) burning fire, or do i go for ~3200 damage non citadelling AP penetrations that only happen now an then as most shells bounce, shatter or hit 0 damage plating ? It seems whatever you do there is RNG involved, unless you can actually get penetrating angles on citadels, which is an enemy player mistake and not a player skill ? Yeah it is almost shamefull to only learn such stuff after so many battles......i got the citadelling part of AP ofcourse but used HE automaticly when i could not get a broadside. Since a lot of Cruisers suffered a lot from IFHE halving fire chance i switched to firing AP more, even on angled targets......with wildly varing results from amazing ( instantly exploding Cruisers ) to poor i did not understand. But now i do ( or begin to see what i was missing to be more modest ) ....thnx to ColonelPete.

    280 - 300 mm guns : AP or HE ?

So AP overmatching the 19 mm superstructure does not arm the fuse and merely end in a overpenetration when it does not hit thicker armour inside the ship ? I didn't calculate with that yet... Damned info about AP mechanics is all over the place as well....need to look at at least 3 different WG pages to get all the numbers. That said i do notice AP causes damage spikes on angled targets from Cruiser to BB while (IF)HE merely caused chipping damage in the range of ~ 1000 damage.

    Battleships with torpedoes.

The submerged fixed tubes....yeah if they were removed IRL because they weren't used with succes what can you expect of them in game ? Although that said, i did damage or even sink when not full HP quite some ships with the Mutsu ones, that arent fixed nor submerged, but they come close to such systems due to the inflexible small angle they can be launched from. Virtually straight angle from complete broadside only. So you have to risk a citadelling/devastating broadside counter salvo to be able to launch them. It is more like a last resort or revenge weapon. So maybe WG just fears it will be overpowered at low tiers toward BB that did not have this. Or WG feels there is no point to it as BB will lose the ability except in higher tiers for German BB and players will not like it losing something they once had and were used to. Higher tiers is supposed to mean progress in game....not losing abilites. But that said i am all for it...if they had it IRL, they should have it in game.....if it is not very useful it is to the player to ignore them. Just like they do with secondaries on most ships, especially Cruisers.

    Skip bombers...

That old RL video does show it has considerable advantages : you can come in as low as torpedo bombers would having effect on AA of ships but you don't have to slow down as torpedo bombers would. No clue what advantage that would have in game other then another flavor of CV mechanics. When mimicking RL you would say you also don't have to slow down as there is no wide torpedo reticule to narrow faster.

    Kusnetsov, Cunningham of Lutjens ?

I struggled with that too.....up to the point i decided to use AP more.
  6. Beastofwar

    Kusnetsov, Cunningham of Lutjens ?

For me it is ships before captain gimmicks. That said i have them all. Only Lutjesn and Kutzenetsov do noticeable things often enough that i see them in game, apart from some fireworks.
  7. In other games i have had issues with my newer 4 core I3 8100 coupled with a modern version 1050 Ti that does not occur on my older I5 3750K coupled with an antiquated R9 280. The same goes for stuttering and hickups in WOWS......the older and far more power hungry system simply NEVER does that. There was a problem with the I3 being too new for the MB's original BIOS version and flashing that reduced much of the stuttering in other games. But it never went away completely. So when WOWS hickups on the I3 i don't know if that is a hardware issue or a WOWS server one. Quite remarkable is too that games that stutter on the i3 run smooth as silk on my i5 notebook......that does not have a GFX card at all. So when WOWS hickups on the I3 i don't know what to think of it. I do know as stated the older i5 does not have these issues. Same connection as well.....

    DD Gunboat vs Torpedo DD

And this is exactly why not every type DD should be blasting guns like some claim : BB that do not know you are there will not change course all the time. Concealment now and then is no concealment at all. As human players that see you popping up here and there are smart/experienced* enough to calculate where you will be next. Then you face BB that change course all the time, and torpedoes that will miss all the time. “Be extremely subtle even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War. And formless you can be in this games DD that support extreme concealement. But that probably will not say anything to the damage/score racer type of player. That one is in the game for different reasons. And yet others are just better off rushing in caps to explode there, complaining the anti-DD mechanism ( Rockets, Radar, Hydro, SAP shells, Creeping smoke ) that killed them in that zone where you never have to search for enemy DD is OP.... * “To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War. A lot of players use all classes of ships. It immensly helps to know what your enemy are going to do, and what you can do about it. A lot of players also refuse this. They are most probable to use the term "OP" at every ship or game mechanic that kills them. It is best to account for both when trying to destroy them.

    Asymetric battles

I was swarmed/zerged by an enemy team almost ( save 1 ) completely made out of DD while in a CV......that would be 10 or 11 DD......and in my team there was another human CV. It was hilarious.....we both picked off DD's one by one at an alarming high rate but could not stop some of them reaching us ( behind the U shaped island ) anyway. The allied BB's had no chance whatsoever. I could have killed at least one more were it not i was in a Saipan and that damned thing has no secondaries. But still would have lost. Being stormed by that many DD racing toward you is a new high in amusement in this game though......i truely enjoyed it and i am happy for the DD that made it despite the dismay of losing so many comrades to hated CV quite living up to their reputation toward killing DD. That calls for a little adaptition in a certain song describing their ordeal : You'll take my life but I'll take yours too You'll fire your rockets but I'll run you through So when you're waiting for the next attack You'd better stand there's no turning back A DD's horn sounds as the charge begins But on this battlefield no one wins The smell of DD smoke and heated boilers breath As you plunge into a certain death The DD shudders with speed we break to run The pityful sound of the AA guns And as we race towards the aircraft wall The screams of pain as my comrades fall We evade wrecks that sink into iron bottom sound And as the CV planes fire another round We get so near yet so far away We won't live to fight another day Btw : seeing the makeup of the enemy team being in a CV sure made my eyes widen in disbelief.....i don't know who "feared" who most....i usually get" nervous" when seeying 4 DD in an enemy team already as one of them usually ends up near my CV. Now there were 10 or 11 of them ! You do know in advance how that will end......but it is still great fun making a lot of them pay the price to an extend they might actually have been fearing they might not make it.

not free to play more pay to play

Not going foreward in a low tier team in asymetric battles is extremely hurtful to the teams chance to win. Camping or being AFK = lose. It is well justified to be (mass) reported for that. For a change.

    Smolensk

Wanna bet when players discover ( forced to because long range fire hosing does not work anymore ) the other features of Smolensk - insta executing capping DD's and given opportunity their light Support Cruisers too - complaining posts are raised again ? A much safer bet is making it a proper powerful AA support Cruiser as it would be in RL with such guns. Then only CV players have something to complain about, and the majority of the players would be happy with a Smolensk for a change.

    Final nail in the coffin

And then there is just not liking the random "meta" that gets repetitive very soon. WG knows that and that is probably why we get "feather ruffling" elements thrown in and removed again from time to time to prevent boredom. But it is really a lack of a choice of interesting modes for me most of the time. Only randoms as the "main game mode" is not good enough and only a few T6 and a mere 1 T7 "Operation of the week" gets old when playing it a zillion times very fast too. But the answer is indeed not complaining about it too much but simply finding other games to spend ones precious spare life time on, if these are more enjoyable. And they often are. And simply coming back to play WOWS when you feel like it again.

    DD Gunboat vs Torpedo DD

And i never said i never use guns.....but if i do it had better be worth giving up my concealment for. As the heaviest of all anti-ship weapons will only hit human enemy targets anywhere relaibly when they are unaware that you are there. Torpedo damage based DD should be played like a surfaced submarine. Can't do that blasting poppy popcorn guns like some clown attracting attention on you. Sometimes when running into another DD trying to do as you do you will have to fight it firing guns. That loss of concealment and all the enemy becoming aware you are there is bad enough as it is. A completely different thing are French DD and other DD more or less like them. These obviously do not stalk BB's with concealment as their greatest asset, but boom&zoom blasting guns. I do that too ofcourse as that is where their strenght is. But they are also built for it with enormous speed and the French even damage migation and Russians heals. They cannot be compared to torpedo based DD. So stating that al players should use guns more is a fools advice as there are DD that are suitable for that and DD that will completely fail with that. The new player some are so worried about won't know the difference and fail miserably. Btw : i play a lot of Operations....ofcourse i know how to use DD guns....i however also know when not to use them as bots are even better then humans in killing the lowest HP ship in their view. So properly learning to avoid attracting attention when not killing something with it Operations are perfectly suitable training ground for. And there too you get better results torpedoing targets that don't see you coming....something that is far more important in PvP as humans won't forget where you were and where you will go if you were stupid enough tot pop up in enemy view somewhere, that could have been prevented. When you want to blast guns and only be concealed when incoming fire gets too much, play a Cruiser. Or a French or Russian mini-cruiser DD that can handle such incoming damage. If the person would have said that, he would have been right.

    Smolensk

When using Smolenks one feature impressed me : the ability to tear a capping enemy DD apart in seconds. Almost instant even. The effect of that many small guns in medium-short range on DD is terryfying. And the good thing about that : that will stay after the captain skill changes. It's AA was always lacking though. In exchange for losing the long range fire hosing ablility WG might give it proper AA dps as it is strange a DD like Halland is beating it squarely ( if not in stats then in game reality ) Also goes for Cruisers like Atlanta that were in real life AA escort Cruisers. The Colbert will be affected by the changes too. They should get proper AA dps for losing out on surface combat ability ( range and fire chance changes mostly )

    DD Gunboat vs Torpedo DD

I really have no clue what i am doing........hell i seem win things just like that......imagine what would happen if i did have DD skills Imagine some new player would listen to him when he says something...the world would stop to rotate ! Afterall the guy has hidden stats...he must suck...even when we really could not know that. Enough ? I think the examples are diverse enough DD types....Lots more where that came from.....but i guess a mod would intervene. So i will leave it at this.

Ohhh...look....not a gun shot fired and no kills !! According to "experts" i should be bottom score list, killed, and on the losing side....but w8.....

    Smolensk

    Modules dude....even higher ROF or longer range or ROFLexploding some squadrons maybe ? What you choose makes quite a difference. I found this list too Harugumo: 200 shells/minute (T9) Kitakaze: 160 shells/minute Daring: 144 shells/minute Smaland: 141.18 shells/minute (T9) Friesland: 133.33 shells/minute Halland, Marceau, Gearing: 120 shells/minute Khabarovsk: 96 shells/minute Hayate, Z-52: 90 shells/minute Grozovoi: 85.74 shells/minute Somers: 80 shells/minute (T9) Jutland: 75 shells/minute Kleber: 68.56 shells/minute Shimakaze: 62.70 shells/minute
  20. Beastofwar

    Smolensk

Nope there are considerable differences between the guns on actual gun stats other then range and fire chance. But the complaning was about supposedly too high fire chance and then the differences get much smaller. The Friesland has much higher ROF 2,8 x even, while the fire chance per shell is the same. It has slightly less range but when taking AFT and the module both have pretty long range for small high ROF guns. The Friesland is also 10 m more accurate then Smolenks which is not a lot but we are talking hundreds of shells being spit out here. When the smoke disperses Friesland has a much higher chance of getting away and doing it again. And again. And again. It is a DD afterall, not a Cruiser. So all in all i rate Friesland and DD like it much more dangerous then Smolensk. The Smolenks torpedo's are mainly a deterrence for those that want to run it down in smoke anyway. But at the ranges these 2 can spit a storm of fire , running them down is not an option anyway. Maybe the thing is no one tries to build a Friesland like they would a Smolenks....as they want it to perform like a DD.

    Smolensk

Yeah i was editing that while you reacted. Still 4,5 sec vs 1.8 sec so you can already half those barrels to 8 vs 4. Or even 6 vs 4....
  22. Beastofwar

    Smolensk

Friesland : 1.8 seconds reload, 8 % fire chance, 12.3 km range ( before AFT, BFT and module buffs ) Smolensk : 4,5 seconds reload, 8 % fire chance, 13,8 km range ( Before AFT, BFT and module buffs ) Does anyone understand why Smolensk is loathed and the subject of daily complaining posts but no one even mentiones Friesland ??? Ofcourse Friesland doesnt have that many guns but is has MUCH faster ROF.

    DD Gunboat vs Torpedo DD

I clapped "ignore user" on specific forum members who's only contribution seems to personally attack or belittle others. One of them even use "lying" in every reaction. And not only on this forum or even only toward me ! Such garbage does not need to be read anyway, so now i can't. Too bad i can't set it for NA forums aswell. Referring to one of these ignored users is now useless, can't read it anymore. I don't think i ever want to disable that ever again either. It is what this forum function is for.
  24. Do BB need that ? Hardcore campers won't accept it, but one of the tasks of a BB ( thick armour and large HP pool ) is to draw some enemy fire off allied far more fragile Cruisers so they may live longer and with that help the team a lot. For this drawing fire off allies BB are awarded ( highest of all classes ) with score for potential damage landing or passing near them by game design. When you make BB invisible by blocking aircraft radios that are spotting them more fragile Cruiser will be focussed again, and destroyed. While you float there with full HP, but sole survivor in the face of multiple enemies. It does not help a team to win. Could Cruisers use that ? Probably much more usefull for them seen their relative fragility yes. But what happens to BB when fire lobbing Cruisers suddenly get much more survivable ? BB could be like floating funeral pires and a horror to play. What happens to allied DD when enemy support Cruisers lurking outside caps are not killed ? They already have a very low life expectancy when they enter a cap. There really is a balance in the game keeping classes in check. Upset that to much, and one class becomes rampant. DD are apparently very powerful ( their torpedo's are the heaviest weapons in game ) and seem to need that many anti-DD mechanics to keep them in check. So countering class counter mechanicls could have a lot of very bad consequences.
  25. It would lower difficulty of using DD. That could make DD more enjoyable to play...... or it could make DD are a rampant plague sinking everything around them. One would say all these anti-DD mechanics were not designed for nothing. They are meant to keep what DD can do in check. That seems necessary for game balance, as DD pack the heaviest anti-ship weapons in game.
