  1. So you made it to World of Warships. Congratulations, it is a very fun game to play... but the question is how? Since there are so many threads about what and how to do it, let's start a quick comprehensive guide of what to do. Ship Classes Nations Navigation and Maneuvering Combat: Gunnery Combat: Torpedoes Combat: Carrier Air Groups Combat: Active Skills Ship Classes Let's start right off with the basics. There are currently 4 different types of ships in game. While they still do have different characteristcs per nation and ship, the classes themselves mostly share a common goal. So I'm going to introduce the characteristics of each class to you. [CA] Cruisers Since this is the class you start off with, we'll start with them. Cruisers in general are the work horses of the fleet. They are average in almost everything - meaning they can fullfill any task in the fleet. Most of them pack a rather high rate of fire and some even sport torpedo launchers. They have some armour but it won't withstand a serious bombardment. A specialty, most cruisers are quite good at, is sinking destroyers (DD) with their main batteries and (usually) HE shells. The high rate of fire and usually large amount of guns makes them perfect for shelling enemy destroyers. They are also adequately protected against most destroyer guns and are maneuverable enough to avoid the enemy torpedoes when they stay at least 4-5 km away. Engaging battleships can work with a cruiser, however you do not want to eat a broadside, since that will severly cripple or outright destroy you. While some cruisers sport enough DPM to bring a BB in some serious trouble, one lucky salvo from a BB can take out a cruiser. If you have to engage a battleship, you have to use your maneuverability. Watch closeley when the enemy is firing, and turn to throw off his aim - that of course works better the further away the BB is. Once you advance in the game, your main role besides fighting off destroyers and other cruisers is aerial cover. Cruisers often sport the best air defence - besides carriers themselves. So in higher tier games it is a good idea, to support your battleships with your AA guns to mow those pesky torpedo bombers out of the sky. [DD] Destroyers The second class you can unlock are the destroyers. Their main purpose can easily be determined, when you know that they were also called torpedo boats by some nations. Your objective is to launch your torpedoes into enemy battleships or carriers. Of course you have some guns, but these are mainly for fending of enemy destroyers and can also be a problem for yourself as firing these makes you visible to the enemy. If you don't have to fire your guns, use low visibility to your advantage and sneak up on enemy ships, launch your torpedoes and get out and find some cover. The ability to lay smoke screens aids you in that approach - and also disabling your AA guns when you try to go unnoticed (default key: P). When you engage close range, keep in mind, that most battleships, cruisers and even some carriers have secondary guns, that can be very deadly to you, especially since they are AI controlled and will fire at you, even if the BB is engaged with something else. You're also sailing the fastest and most nimble ships in game. If you get fired upon, turn a lot, to make yourself difficult to hit. Try to avoid direct confrontations and launch your torpedoes into distracted enemies for devastating effect. [bB] Battleships The might of any fleet, these ships sport some major ordnance. Up to 46cm or 18 inches in diameter, they fire shells weighing up to and even more than one ton per gun at the enemy at up to 25 km. Reading that, you might think, why would anyone else sail some puny ship when he could go for a battleship? Well they have several drawbacks. First of all, they are huge if not outright gigantic. So anything shooting at you, will most likely hit. You have some tough armour around the most vulnerable parts of your ship, but not everywhere. Also, being huge means being heavy. Heavy things turn an break much more slowly than light things. So, if you see a spread of torpedoes incoming, it is often too late to turn away from all of them. So keep an eye out for torpedo bombers an destroyers. Don't let them get too close and turn before they get to launch their deadly cargo. Another drawback you have are your guns. Yes they are big, yes they can devastate enemy ships with a single hit, yes they can fire almost anywhere on the map. You pay for that in other departments. First, your turrets are turning slow - and when I say slow, I mean a snail is fast in comparison. Turning that huge piece of metal from one side completely to the other can take up to almost 2 minutes. That means, plan ahead where you're going. It's no good when you can't use your guns for two minutes, because someone popped up on your other side. Second, loading such a huge gun takes time - a lot of time. You can't just switch ammo types and blindly fire away and think something will hit. Again, you have to plan every salvo. Leading the target is extremely important, because your shells can fly more than 20 seconds when the target is far away. If you're in doubt, you might want to risk a ranging shot and see where it lands. The ALT key is your friend here, since it displays additional information like the distance to the enemy ship and the distance and flight time to where you're aiming. Third, such a huge gun on a floating platform has some serious deviaton. In the worst case, they can be off by about as much as your ships length. So shooting smaller ships might just splash water all around them. If you engage smaller ships, you might want to shoot HE ammo. While you can still severely hurt or kill a cruiser with AP ammo (since they sport some armour) your AP ammo is practically useless against destroyers or carriers. Battleships on the other hand, load AP and try to hit the center of the ship or directly below the turrets. That is where their magazines are for the big boom effect. So try to stay at range and plan your attack. Never go alone, because a single BB is just a juicy target. Always assist the rest of your fleet with your enormous firepower and big armour - and while you reload, they can keep the enemy busy. [CV] Aircraft Carriers The last class of ships you can unlock play out a little different. As the name suggests, these ships are all about aircraft. Basically you sail a mobile airport. That means, you have no offensive weapons that you can control on your ships hull itself. Therefore you might want to stay out of the range of enemy ships guns - however, that also increases flight time for your planes. So don't stay too far away. It can be a little tricky, but the best thing to do usually is to stay slightly behind the rest of your fleet an support them in any way you can. Also, you're not just some sort of artillery that sticks in the corner and doesn't do much besides launching bombers. While you always have some bombers and can launch torpedoes, you also have fighter planes. Use these for scouting, intercepting enemy bombers and shooting down enemy scouts. You're not only a long range damage dealer, you're also your fleets aireal shield. Support your cruisers in their air defence fight just as much as you use your torpedo bombers. Speaking of which, use your torpedo bombers wisely. That means, plan your angle of attack (by dragging it around the enemy ship) and try to use squadrons in conjunction, so that if he turns out of one spread of torps, he will turn into the second. Use different angles of attack and maneuver your planes clear of enemy air defence. to be continued with Nations
  2. Yet still forbidden. It WILL get censored once spotted / reported. While the behaviour of said named and shamed individual might be destructive and worthy of shaming, doing so with his name is against the CoC. And since two wrongs don't make one right, it is just prudent to notify OP that this is not the way to go and will not be tolerated by the moderation team.
  3. Sometimes it is... the gender pronouns are a little bit difficult to understand because there is no real logic behind when to use male, female or neutral form when not talking about real genders and the only thing you can do is learn when to use which....
  4. The problem in this case is, that the adjective "groß" is using a gender specific version when used as an attributively but it doesn't use a gender specific version when used predicatively. For example one would say "Der Turm ist groß" in a predicative form (the tower is great) but "Das ist ein großer Turm" in the attributive form (This is a great tower) - and to now completely throw everyone off, great in that sense can mean "big", "tall" or "huge" but not "great" in the form of craftsmanship etc. When used with a person "great" can now mean both the height or the skill...
  5. Großer doesn't mean "greater" in that regard, just "great". The name actually refers to "Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg" who earned the nickname "der Große Kurfürst" in battle. He already was "Kurfürst" which means "prince elector". The seven prince elector were the princes/kings/archbishops that would be allowed to vote on who would be Holy Roman Emperor since it wasn't a hereditary monarchy. Back to Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg. The full name when addressing him would have been "Großer Kürfurst Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg" thus "Großer" with "r" in the end is only used when addressing the person directly. If you refer to his title alone, it would have been "der Große Kurfürst". The ship was named for him and thus the "Großer Kurfürst" albeit ommitting the rest is the correct name.
  6. Ask again when the browser finished loading. It showed this as the latest post and I didn't pay attention to the date.
  7. There are some exceptions where some ships were addressed with the male pronoun either by their commanding officers or even most people. It didn't stick and for quite some time ships use the female pronoun ("die") in German when addressed by name, although the pronoun for the noun ship itself would be neutral ("das Schiff"). There might be some exceptions for when the commanding officer or even the majority of the crew refer to a ship with the male pronoun, however it won't hold with the general populace. If the ship class is meant, then the female pronoun is always used. The pronoun for the word "class" is already female ("die Klasse"). Cars and planes on the other hand - while also having a neutral pronoun for the word car ("das Auto") and plane ("das Flugzeug") - are referred to as male in German when addressed by specific type like "der 3er (BMW)" or "der (Audi) A3" or "der A320". Incidentally, when referring to a special plane by name, then the pronoun used is again the female one "die Landshut".

    The Language Barrier in game.

It's just English and French for me besides my native German. Still leaves more than 20 languages all over Europe... but the majority of people in Europe should be covered by these 3 languages to at least understand one of them nowadays...

Nuked by CV - no rewards

Time spent in battle: 02:08 min Distance travaled: 9.08 km velocity = distance / time = 9.08 km / 128 seconds = 9080m / 128 seconds = 71 m/s okay, devided by 2.5 for the enlargement factor: 71 m/s / 2.5 = 28.375 m/s * 1.94 kts per m/s = 55 kts Either the Baltimore is now a torpedo that has 55 kts speed or someone quit battle while the ship was still sailing somewhere...

    Ridiculous accounts

The question in that case is rather not why he is obnoxious but rather why the account has access to T10 ships. Leaked press account or something?

    Segal's departing

Since John Doe is the default name for an unknown person, it might be that they just want to get back at whoever sued them regarding Steven Segal. Or it could very well be Warner Bros. - who are holding the rights to "Under Siege" - came out of the blue and they just had to comply in short notice. On the other hand, the random name generator does come up with names of real life people, see the captain that came with my Gaede and has the name of a European Comissioner. As for permissions, that would often come down to the respective legal system of the country. I'd think all of the people that could be forwarded for this are now dead and part of history. The biggest problem would be using photographs since copyright on those can last up to a century after the original creator's death. The uniforms themselves etc. rather wouldn't since they are mostly outdated.

    Mysteries of WoWS

That's what you get when you do a request like this pseudo-code: SELECT COUNT(*), class FROM ships WHERE nation = 'Germany' GROUP BY class

    Segal's departing

Since it's a (mostly) BB associated commander, another possible alternative would be Willis A. Lee for the American side. Commander of Battleship Division Six during the battle of Guadalcanal. Honestly, I'm not mad at removing Steven Segal, but adding a real replacement would have a nice touch to it.

    Overconfidence™ Mk.2

I'm taking a wild guess, but maybe because it was told to you in the first thread why that happend, even explained in full detail, and you open a second one about the same thing happening and again are (or pretend to be) absolutely clueless about it although it was explained to you...

    MM go home, you're drunk!

My guess is that in MM the class balance rules take precedence to equalizing the tiers. Thus the T8 BB "drags" the rest of the division members along with the MM unable to find appropriate DDs to fit to this. Thus it takes the next best it can to get a decent battle.

    German cruisers

Yorck is also about the only ship where HE is decent. All others you should only use HE when you can't reliably deal damage with AP. If you got a ship even remotely broadside in ANY german CA, unload AP into that. Dealing 10k salvos is quite common on the Hindenburg with AP when your aim is good and since you can fire every 10 seconds that adds up quite quickly.

    New game mechanic

AP bombs have a time delayed fuse. They do not explode on impact but penetrate the weaker deck armour due to inertia and explode inside... Though since AP shells and bombs both have explosive fillers, they could actually both cause fire...
  22. That's more or less the point. It can't be fully realistic, otherwise you'd need some sort naval education to even begin with playing the game, let alone be successful in it. On the other hand, these changes also make it impossible for classical naval tactics to work. Like for example crossing the T, which was like the best thing to happen in a real battle and is likely the worst thing to happen in game. If you analyze why this is the case, you will quickly come to exactly those differences between real life and in game: Most obvious advantage of sailing continously broadside on is having all your guns able to fire on the enemy. This is a necessity when your hitrate is as low as 3% and your ammunition stores are finite. It is however a far smaller advantage in game, where you hit enough shells anyways and risk catastrophic damage. A slightly less obvious yet non the less crucial advantage in real life is that you do not have to recalculate your own trajectory in relation to your target. If you sail a constant course, the only variable of firing short, long, ahead or behind the target is then the movement of the enemy ship. You do not have to adjust for your own ships movement. In game, where distance is a given factor, that is practically a moot point. The deviation elipse in real life also is rotated more or less by 90°. Meaning shots will rather go far or short than left and right. Reason is again the uncertainty about the distance to the enemy. Which means if you sail bow on in real life, you're actually presenting a better target than broadside. On the other hand, shells fly pretty straight out of the barrel. They do not deviate much to left and right unless the barrel is worn out. In addition external factors like rolling mostly make your shots fall short or go too far again, much less than going left or right.
  23. It can handle it (and does it in fact, only to a very minor degree). Waves and rough weather aren't implemented in making your ship pitch and roll (although this would be possible). Your ship however does turn around its center of gravity to some point. It's just so that people feel more comfortable with the controls and do not end up smashing their ships against rocks all over the place. Other breaks from reality (only mentioning a few, there are a lot more): Ships are 2.5 times the original sizes. Yamato is roughly 660m long in game. Ships would be tiny otherwise and your hitrate would plummet. Ships travel at 2.5 times their original speed. In order to not make them look standing still. Shells also fly faster. The actual travel time of Yamato's shells out to 27 km was the better part of a minute while in game it's about 15 seconds. Otherwise you wouldn't hit anything. Ship rudders turn a lot faster too. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to evade anything. Ranges to other ships are 100% exact and do not have to be computed using range finders and radar. You look down on enemy ships at an angle. Even from the tops of the tallest ships, at 20 km distance, you would look flat at the side of the ship.

    World of Battleships?

    Okay, then explain yesterday's T10 battle to me: 2 BBs (1 T10, 1 T8), 5 CA (3 T10, 1 T9, 1T8) and 5 DD (3 T10, 1 T9, 1 T8). If you say now, that this doesn't happen often - granted - but so does a battle with more than 5 BBs per team.
