So, I started to watch the video about HMAS Vampire with Richard Cutland. I was already nervous because his tank videos contained errors and he is pretty useless as well, so ships?!?!?!?! Anyway first let me declare my hand, I served 22 years in the RN as a Navigation and Warfare Officer so I think I know my stuff just a little bit. I got barely a minute or two into the video and there he is pointing to a a Bridge Radar Display ( a Type JUA if you don't believe me - Google it http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/258615.html) and called it a sonar. That was quite enough to confirm my worst fears. I could not watch any more. What I find even more interesting is that two comments I have posted on the video page pointing out this error have both been deleted!! Or at least I can no longer see them. Please can we have someone with a little knowledge do this stuff and not Richard "The Challenged" Cutland

This is true as I was there..... Sailing in the Western Atlantic in '89 or '90 (probably '89) in HMS Sheffield. We carried a flight of 2 Lynx Helicopters and were conducting Flying Operations with both airborne at the same time. As Operations officer, I happened to be on the bridge when we encountered the USS John F Kennedy travelling in the opposite direction at a distance of about 5 miles. My Captain "Signalman....make by light to the Kennedy, I have launched my air group, request you launch yours." Signal was acknowledged but no reply was received. My favourite from WWII, was the submarine escorting a convoy on the surface. Submarine to Convoy Escort Commander... "In the event of enemy surface action, intend remaining on the surface" Response from escort commander "So do I".

This particular radar display disappeared from service in the mid to late seventies, not sure Jingles would have recognised it for what it was, or is that wasn't? There are plenty of folk around though who could have done a better job than The Challenged..... including your good self, no doubt.

Is anyone else having this problem? Almost every time I enter a battle I am kicked back to the Login screen and it then takes anywhere between 2 and 10 attempts to connect back to the server. There are two error messages I get Unable to Login to server and Server Unavailable. Also almost every time I leave a battle before the end to try and return to port I get the same issue. It is driving me nuts and this seems to be a WG issue with the servers rather than my PC or the client installation or my connection. Today I have spent so long on two occasions trying to get logged back in that when I have succeeded my ship is already sunk. This is beyond a joke. It is making the game almost impossible to play with any real pleasure or enjoyment.

I find in about 50% of battles, I either get kicked to the Server Login screen on clicking battle from the Port, or more often I get kicked to the server login screen at the end of a battle both when Esc'ing out before the actual end of battle or waiting for the battle to end. Also, mainly on destroyers, I am running straight and the the ship just starts to turn of it's own accord, usually when in some proximity to land. Finally, a minor observation, but the apparent speed of the ship through the water is pretty much the same no matter what speed you are doing. At 35 knots in a destroyer it looks, from the speed through the water visually as though you are going about 12-14 knots. After 22 years at sea I am pretty good at gauging a ships speed through the water visually.... Thanks

A question about sea collision rules and wind direction
Drago99 replied to N00b32's topic in General Discussion
I would suggest that the most effective rule to apply would be smaller ships stay out of the way of larger, less manoueverable ships, always try and avoid by turning to starboard (right) and ultimately be aware of what's around you. If in any doubt give way, do not assume you have been seen and if you are taking avoiding action, do so as early as you can.
