Well just to play the contrarian...I'm out in my Scharnhorst and for the entire battle I'm closer to the enemy than a Błyskawica. He wouldn't fight for a cap vs a weakened enemy DD and when the cap was obviously clear he was miles away from the action... I'm usually the DD player cursing the cowardly BBs but this time the roles were reversed.

I'm actually re adjusting my opinion of my playing ability. I've come back to this game with the arrival of the royal Navy tech Tree to find I'm better than I was by a couple of % WR and by a fair few hundred average XP. I can't answer this that clearly at the moment as a result. I do know I always feel more in control in a destroyer or a ship like a destroyer which would be a RN CL.

Ships disappear from view because either you have passed outside their view distance or the friendly ship that was spotting the enemy has lost sight of the ship. You need to get to grips with the basic spotting mechanics to play the game well. I visited once and watched the port from the clifftop. I could spend a day listening to the cricket on the radio and watching the ferries come and go...hoping for a glimpse of France I could sneer at.
