Gun firing DDs are now for masochists only
Ubertron_X replied to almtrain's topic in General Discussion
While universally true, the definition of teamplay includes a huge phletora of variants, e.g. passive teamplay (for example "abusing" your teams hit points and spotting for your own gains; something that especially CV's are perceived to be notorious for) and active teamplay (spotting, tanking, AA or smoking up friendlies on purpose). And while the later is of course the better form of teamplay it is immensely harder to pull off in randoms. And even if this may be a very much exaggerated statement I'd say using the former sometimes a ship can indeed win "alone". -
Gun firing DDs are now for masochists only
Ubertron_X replied to almtrain's topic in General Discussion
Though you are not wrong, the problem when having to rely on allies is, well... you have to rely on allies. And if my DD's only stayed within effective AA cover of a friendly cruiser or BB I would hardly cap or contest any cap, mostly because said CA's or BB's will not go near a cap until it is won and cleared. Been there, done that when the CV patch went live (and questioned myself to mount the 20km torps on my Shima again). -

Idea/Brainstorming to make CVs useful for Surface ships
Ubertron_X replied to DFens_666's topic in General Discussion
Well that is exactly the point. Playing the game, dealing damage and killing things all for yourself is not considered teamplay and one big reason why CV's have a bad reputation, even among your own team. All other classes bring qualities to the table that inherently enable teamplay. DD's can spot by just being there. BB's can tank by just being there. CA's can use their various gimmicks (hydro, radar, def aa) by just being there. CV's? Well they can deal damage, but so can any other ship. -
Tiers 7 tp 10 totally unplayable.
Ubertron_X replied to DocStrangeFruit's topic in General Discussion
The most annoying thing about CV's while captaining cruisers and destroyers is that in order to avoid much of their payload you probably have to do some crazy maneuvering, probably showing broadside to the entire enemy force that happens to be on your flank... -
The thing is, I rate this map a very good learning map for cruisers, heck, if there were a tutorial I would even flag it as mandatory. The map is all about positioning, evasive tanking, choosing your targets and shots carefully and/or decide when to hold fire in order to go dark and reposition. Once you have mastered open seas warfare in your cruiser, mastering any map with suitable terrain should be very easy. Of course some cruisers are better suited to open seas warfare than others, however this map is very much about learning how much you can still do with the odds against you.
-
I have to admit that the map can be tricky if you are a) low tier, b) don't have sufficient range and/or floaty arcs and c) you are not a stealthy DD or hard target BB (or all three of them, e.g. looking at you Atago), but nonetheless a great map. Also guys please keep in mind that this is just one map. ONE! And we have dozens of maps where you can hide/camp assume tactical positions behind islands.

Well I have to admit that there are times when I think: Ok, I have been in the brunt of the fighting and done my fair share, time to reap the rewards (= easy damage/kills of straglers and leftovers) but the game ends shortly thereafter. Thus I can understand that it can be frustrating if you are having a good game but it ends prematurely. However I have been in much, much more battles where my team hopelessly messed up within the first 5 minutes and I am very glad that I did not have to endure another 15 minutes of beatdown. And as (for me) getting whacked by overwhelming forces is much more frustrating than ending a good game early my final verdict is still no.

Well, it will be interested to see how the French DD line will be performing, which apparently is also designed for speed tanking. On the other hand that also opens up the old question if and why DD's should be better than CA's when it comes to evasive tanking, something that the old Khaba could easily do. And while in principle DD's should be a counter to BB's I am still not quite convinced if they should counter them by use of guns.

Not promoting the use of illegal mods, but I find this one of actual use. Even after 10k battles I often misjudge how the enemy torpedo spread actually opens up and eat a dodgeable torp.
-
- can be done in coop, where damage farming is way too easy + you don't have to pay so much attention to your clan members skill levels and appropriate timing anymore, i.e. send in the less skilled players first, so the better players won't waste their attempts on low xp counts

As far as I know the game checks your current inventory at the time the container is awarded in order to avoid doubles (premium ships). So as long as you have not opened the container and the contents have been registered in your inventory the game will not be able to check for doubles properly. Exempli gratia: You get a super container with a premium ship inside, lets say the Arizona. The game checks if you already have it. If you don't have it you will be awarded the Arizona once you open the container. Then you get another super container, again with a premium ship inside, again Arizona (improbable but lets roll with it, especially if you already have lots of premium ships in your inventory). Again the game checks if you already have it in your inventory the time the container is awarded. And now there are two options: 1) You have openend the first container and the Arizona is already in your inventory. Then the game will re-roll the premium ship until it manages to find a ship that you do not have in port (which might be lower or higher in tier or more or less rare). 2) You have not openend the first container and the Arizona is not in your inventory. Then the game will assign the Arizona to the second container also, which means that if you open those containers you will get the Arizona from the first container and then be awared doubloon compensation for the "second" Arizona instead of a different premium ship. => Always open the containers as fast as possible and also do not buy huge batches of special crates (which might be better from a commercial point of view for the regular contents of the crate, but not regarding special contents drop rates)!
-
Well, you shouldn't keep them containers lying around for this long anyway. Do to the "roll contents at the time you get them" instead of "roll contents at the time of opening the container" algorythms which also double check your current inventory you should open each and every container immediately instead. Else you might get screwed, e.g. rolling the same item or ship twice instead of rolling two different items or ships.

developing advice Proposal about malicious use of "Map Border Humping"
Ubertron_X replied to CapitanoAraym's topic in General Discussion
Thats correct, but I still do not like the line of reasoning. I mean, lets take football. Why is running out the clock considered unsportsmanlike and even punishable? Because it simply isn't fair play. Not if you lead three nil and also not if you are down nil three. And this is how border surfing should be treated too, i.e. regardless who is winning and why you should be discouraged to do it. -
developing advice Proposal about malicious use of "Map Border Humping"
Ubertron_X replied to CapitanoAraym's topic in General Discussion
If we apply that line of reasoning to all of WoWs, we could question a lot of more or less beneficial terrain features. For example: When your gameplay depends on islands, you either did something wrong before or the enemy did something wrong before. So tell me, what did an american CL do wrong on the Oceans map? Simply chose the wrong ship before the battle has even begun? Don't get me wrong, I also don't think border humping is much of an issue, however one has to admit that it can still be abused in an unsportsmanlike manner no matter what kind of mistakes or wrong plays have been made so far. -

Stats for the 3 FreeXP Tier IX "Super Cruisers" ("Alaska", "Azuma" and "Kronshtadt")...
Ubertron_X replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
What I make of the numbers: 1) Top of the pops: Premium Supercruisers as expected as they are usually captained by better players and/or feature gimmicks that the other ships don't have (bigger guns or shells etc.) 2) Cruisers like Roon, Saint-Louis, Donskoi or Neptune doing rather well because of either being a heavy cruiser and/or having superior ballistics or smoke. 3) Light cruisers (aka all the Americans) fail horribly because regular players can't make them work. Too squishy in the open in combination with rainbow arcs and the required superior knowledge on positioning is not for everyone.- 20 replies
