    ST, changes to test ships

Once you are within range with both sets of guns, the 406s are the superior gun. They do more damage over extended periods and when it comes to actually firing salvos of whole damage at set intervals the improved frequency of the 406s can be the difference between getting an entire salvo off or not. If a BB is within secondary range the penetration of the 420s is irrelevant, anything angled to the point where it does not produce ricochets can be penetrated by both guns and anything that is angled towards you makes the 420s a worse option as individual ricochets are more costly and the 420s have absolutely no advantage in terms of preventing ricochets and they have no overmatch advantage by comparison. But yes, I said the 420s are probably fine for people who run survivability spec. Like the ones who need the penetration for when they are sniping at max range from 10 line.

Yes, except 410mm(the thickest actual belt of any BB except Kremlin)*1.4(the multiplier for 45°) = 574 which the 406s can penetrate up to 11.5km. And then you have other turtleback schemes like GKs (380+150+45), Repu (32+400+70+40) and Bourg (32+350+50+50) whos actual thickness is up to to 575mm before taking into acount the vertical angling of the turtleback scheme and the horizontal angling of the ship.

What the fairly interesting range that is specific to penetrating the citadel of a 45 degree Kremlin but is not really specific to any other ship at this angle or any other ship at different ranges? What a strangely specific scenario to justify the use of those guns.

    ST, changes to test ships

You don't need to be pretty sure, the numbers are right at the website I linked. A Kremlin angled a 45° is 430mm*1.4 thick so just over 600mm. The 406s can pen this amount around 10.2km, the 420s can do it from 11.5km. So you have to get 1.3km closer with the 406s. Both guns lack the penetration needed to pen the citadel beyond these ranges so the "penetration at around 14-18km" is pure rhetoric. The rest of Kremlins armor can be penetrated by both guns at any range as long as the angle will not cause ricochets. The only randomness that can factor in is the ricochet chance at armor angled between 30-45°. And the penetration of the 406s is sufficient at many ranges, both guns can citadel any BB when broadside at almost all ranges. It is easy to say that some guns have insufficient penetration against a heavily angled BB with one of the thickest belts, I am not sure you will find that the 1km difference in penetration will have a significant impact in many situation and that such a scenario is unrealistic as a Kremlin will continue to angle toward you to achieve guaranteed ricochet angles or else you are flanking the kremlin and it is more worth it to wait the extra seconds required to circle around them until the angling is sufficiently shallow for your range. And regardless of whether or not brawling is a situation you find yourself in every game, having the advantage when you can make that play can be valuable. There are a lot of times you could find a bow on BB and drive by them, both firing at each other as you first come round a corner toward the target, to have your guns then ready to get their broadside before they get the chance to return fire due to your faster reload. And due to GKs well protected citadel you can quite often use the rear turret because showing broadside doesn't make your citadel very vulnerable anyway. But of course whether you can take this opportunity or not is down to your own brain to recognise the situation and consider the risks. Even outside of close quarters scenarios, the guns have almost equal penetration and even though the penetration is worse the penetration is still perfectly usable and they have greater DPM. I've given enough arguments now, the 420s are probably fine for the people running survivability spec and the wehraboos who cant imagine that anything could be better than the "Kruppstahl 42cm L/48 Drh LC/40" but I see no meaningful value to bringing them over the 406s.

    Colored traces

If you disable the tracer effects, no one else can see them. I remember a clanmate who got Ovechkin and was saying to us in clanwars that the tracer effect was very subtle. When I looked at his shells I said to him, looks like it's not even turned on... he checked in port and it was disabled.

Well he has good stats in GK, it works for him. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be better if he didn't use the objectively superior guns.

    ST, changes to test ships

Well in terms of penetration 420mm HE has 3mm more penetration (105mm vs 102mm) 420mm AP penetrates 470mm at 20km, 540mm at 15km, 630mm at 10km, 740mm at 5km and 855mm at point blank. 406mm AP penetrates 430mm at 20km, 510mm at 15km, 600mm at 10km, 715mm at 5km and 845mm at point blank. So, the HE doesnt penetrate anything significant since no armor I know of exists between 102 and 105mm (minotaur citadel belt is 101mm? but both can penetrate it) and the AP loses at most 9.3% of its penetration at 20km and less than that relatively at low ranges. So yes, they lose a small amount of AP penetration, but the penetration of the 406s even at their worst (430mm at 20km) is enough to defeat most armor. And no, they are not worse than Bourgogne. They both have the exact same dispersion and sigma, and the 420mm shells have a velocity of 800m/s, instead of the 406mms 810m/s. Technically this is the 420s being worse but realistically this make almost no difference whatsoever (shell takes an extra 0.2s to travel 20km). Credit: https://wowsft.com/arty In terms of damage. The HE shells do an extra 200 damage on the 420s (5000 vs 4800, 4% increase), or in the case of a penetration this equates to an extra 66 damage. But although they do more damage per shells than the 406s, they reload 3s slower, so the actual damage output over time is less than the 406s. The 420s HE shells do have 3% higher fire chance (41% vs 38%) which is the most compelling reason to use these guns. The AP shells also do an extra 800 damage on the 420s (13500 vs 12700, 6% increase), which is again an extra 264 damage on a penetration. This brings GKs full AP salvo up to 162,000 damage, the joint highest AP salvo in the game alongside Montana, who has faster reload, better sigma, better dispersion, more range but slower shells. But compared to the 406s this is again a bigger salvo that does less damage over time due to the 3s worse reload. The AP shells both overmatch 27mm while not overmatching 30mm so there is no benefit there. Other than these factors the guns are the same, they have the same HP and armor, they turn at the same speed, they are the same number of shells, their range is the same. But there is that one major significant factor that differentiates the two guns. The reload time. 29s reload vs 32s reload. Both are quite good values considering how tanky GK is. But it's also worth considering that the 406s faster reload bring another benefit than just more damage over time. If you engage someone in close quarters and both shoot at each other, you will get a 2nd shot off first with the 406s more often than you will with the 420s. The only ships really affected are Yamato, Monty and Conq (unless you face a BB using range mod for some reason) but with lego mod GK can even get the 406s reload down to 24.6s. Compared to the other BBs at tier 10 with reload mod, only Ohio, Repu and Thunderer can beat that. If you use the 420s then even with the lego mod you will load that second shot slower than every other BB in the game except Kremlin. In some circumstances, that second shot could mean the difference between winning a fight and not. For this reason the benefits the 420s bring (3% more fire chance, 5% more damage, 1-9% more penetration) are not worth losing 10% reload speed and the reload advantage that grants over other BBs.

ST - German aircraft carriers, Z-35

So we have Z-1 at tier 7. A Type 34 class destroyer with a 34 hull and the option of 128mm guns (5x1). Z-39 at tier 7. A Type 36A class destroyer with a 36A hull and the option of 150mm guns (2x1 and 1x2). Z-23 at tier 8. A Type 36A class destroyer with a 36A hull and the option of 128mm (4x1) or 150mm guns (3x1 and 1x2). Z-46 at tier 9. A Type 36C class destroyer with a 36C hull and the option of 128mm guns (3x2). Now we are presented with Z-35. A Type 36B hull which is identical to the 36A hull and can equip 128mm guns (5x1). So, the hull of a tier 8 with the guns of a tier 7. And this ship is intended for tier 9? An inferior hull and armament to the current tier 9 in an outdated AB-CYZ layout, which is not unexpected for a ship that should be tier 7/8. How will this be tier 9 material? I guess we wait and see.

    ST, changes to test ships

What? I just said that reload speed is not linear with calibre, so why would that justify making the reload speeds linear based on the calibre? Reload speed is based partly on the size of the shell, the size and design of the turret, the design of the gun breech and the design of the ammunition feeding the turrets. Any argument that only compares the size of the gun is missing other factors out that could theoretically justify the difference. But at the end of the day, the reload is changed for balance reasons and the reload time was not changed on its own, the reload was changed alongside the AP shell alpha and the dispersion. Otherwise I guess you could argue you could buff Kremlins reload down because 33s for only 457mm guns is obviously too long by comparison...

    ST, changes to test ships

Why even use the 420s on GK unless you fire primarily HE? The lower reload of the 406s makes them muchc better. And the guns on shiki have 2 barrels so technically GK loads faster per barrel. But since reload speed is not linear with calibre your argument makes no sense anyway. Why do 127mm guns take 3s to reload on Gearing but 4s to reload on YY? Magic.

Interesting changes for Shikishima, I'm still looking forward to this ship. Don't really understand the direction for the changes to Marceau and Agir but ok.

ST - German aircraft carriers, Z-35

German CVs look cool, although I mostly dislike GZ as a CV so not sure how I feel about these ships but I guess we will see. Z-35 makes no sense to me whatsoever as a tier 9 DD. It's the hull of Z-39 with the guns of Maass. So, why is it not tier 7? Why not the Type 42, Z-51? Or a Type 38A with 150mm guns? Or even the Spähkreuzer? Even if you want to add Z-35, why tier 9?

    Armory random bundles of 01/04/2020

There are 14 different bundles available, the one available to you at any given time is randomly selected. If you buy the bundle 14 times you are guaranteed to see all of them once. For example, if you buy 13 bundles and the below list says that you still have not received Loyang for Rent the the 14th bundle is guaranteed to be Loyang for Rent (because receipt of all 14 items is guaranteed). Sometimes the bundles include infinite options, so it is not possible to guarantee that you will see specific drop from the list. In this case, there are only 14 individual items and you will be offered the Rental of all 14 listed ships if you purchase the random bundle 14 times.

Clan Brawl - April Fools' Day

Worst thing about the mode was the ocean epicenter map that was really nothing more than a straight up trading race. Not really quirky or fun.
  16. @Tanatoy May I suggest that the belt plating of Gearing be increased to 22mm to once again shatter the HE of 127/128mm guns?

    Bug, change, or just rng?

I've never seen it either myself, although BBs would be perfectly capable of knocking out those turrets. Although unlikely it is possible he was aiming for them intentionally. This was most likely just rng, with you getting unlucky on whether damage to the turret disabled it or not (since it is a chance based on how much damage the turret has taken). Izmail has a normal amount of turret hp for her tier at 15k.

    Should i get Smolensk?

You will probably find yourself firing HE in JB quite regularly too due to the lack of overmatching and the reload booster helps stack fires on someone you know has used damage control.

    Boise or Graf Spee?

IJN cruisers have their own strengths, one thing US cruisers in particular lack is torps, there are times when you dont need consistent damage, you need to kill something that has gotten up close and quickly. Also, IJN cruisers with 203mm guns have better dispersion that most the standard cruiser dispersion shared by 95% of cruisers, they use the DD dispersion which is even better. Their alpha and fire chance are good, but their reload and turret traverse are usually slower. IJN doesn't have a lot of cruisers but some of them, like T8 premium Atago and the t10 Zao are both very strong, versatile ships thanks to the 203mm guns, their concealment, their torps, their mobility. There's nothing else you can buy with dubs that you didn't already mention when it comes to cruisers. For DDs T7 US DD Sims is a decent ship and has a base exp modifier that is higher than average, and T6 KM DD T-61 is a strong allrounder and T7 commonwealth DD Haida is a strong ship when it has a good enough commander. Regarding BBs, T7 KM BB Scharnhorst is a strong ship, with all of the german BB accuracy buffs recently and has solid armor and torps, T7 RN BB Hood is also a good ship with good guns and tons of HP, though it works on AP unlike most RN BBs. It's not really possible to know in advance if you will like any particular premium though, so I understand why you might rate them on their average performance. I still recommend you choose something you find interesting more than just has good stats.

    Boise or Graf Spee?

Boise is a solid american CL, she plays a lot like Helena, Cleveland, etc, but instead of having access to the various consumables all at the same time Boise must choose between DFAA and Hydro, but gets to bring a 2%/sec Repair Party which can really help her survival. However, he range is only 13.5km (one of the shortest at tier 7 other than maybe Atlanta who is 11km), and although she can use her ballistics to shoot over islands she can't always do that, so she will end up near the frontline a lot due to her range. Play her safe enough and try to avoid the citadel damage that can't be effectively repaired. Her 15 guns, when the finally do get to shoot at something, can cause a lot of damage. Graf Spee is pretty unique, she is the only large cruiser below tier 9. Although she is the "pocket battleship" she is not a BB and should not be played as such. She gets a regular heal at tier 6 which is nice, her gun calibre is enough to overmatch armor up to 19mm thick making enemy attempts to angle armor up to 19mm pointless (which includes the bow armor of any cruiser up to and including tier 7) and she has very good torp angles and access to german hydro (5.5km range) and a fighter in addition to her heal. She does have some drawbacks however. Naturally, her guns do take quite a long time to reload at 20 seconds, but as a large cruiser she also does not enjoy regular cruiser dispersion. Her large cruiser dispersion is worse than that of a regular cruiser, combine that with just 6 guns and low rate of fire can mean the number of hits you get can be frustratingly few and infrequent. She also burns for longer, most cruiser fires burn for just 30 seconds, while most large cruisers burn for 60 seconds, Graf Spee burns for 45 (effectively taking 50% more damage from fires that burn their full duration), although this can be counteracted with her repair party. Lastly is her armor, BB guns she may have but BB armor she does not, while her armor is enough to keep her safe from the AP shells of any enemy cruiser when sufficiently angled, enemy BBs will not struggle to cause significant damage and her citadel can be an easy target. Believing she can trade with a BB directly will result in disappointment, she must use the same caution as any other cruiser. She is, at least, a small and relatively fast ship considering she carries 6x 283mm guns. If you're looking for something with good rate of fire (and you enjoy the US CL line as well), Boise is a good choice, once you get used to playing around her range her heal can keep her going for a long time. If you're looking at Spee because of her stats I would say that she does perform well in the right hands, if you understand the implications of having BB guns on a cruiser and how that can work in her favor in terms of overmatching then you can get good results from the guns when they hit. If you only want her because she has good stats, take the Boise. You will always get better stats playing a good ship that you like, than a great ship that you don't. If you do like high RoF have you considered Atlanta?

Long time WOWS player through Steam loading to new computer.

    The different regions require separate logins, if you choose a different region and try to log in it will just fail. There are a lot of players who have multiple instances of WoWS installed because they play on multiple regions for time zone reasons, you have no risk of losing your account by selecting a different region in the client. The region of your account is already set and cannot be changed (on purpose or accidentally), all that matters now is that you install the game client itself for the region that corresponds to your account, so that you are trying to log in to the correct server (otherwise, as I mentioned above, it will just fail). Just to be sure, can you show us what screen is asking you to select a region? The only one that comes to my head is the pre-installation one;

ST - changes to test ships

There are only two BBs in the game with improved ricochet angles, instead they tend to have overmatching that overrules ricochets. The standard behaviour is that AP ricochet chance begins against armor angled at 45° and the chance increases until it is angled at 60° at which the chance is 100%. Some cruisers have improvements to this standard behaviour, such as US heavy cruisers where many of their 203mm shells do not even have a chance to ricochet until 60° and are not guaranteed until 67.5° requiring substantially increased angling to prevent penetrations. Angle you must be to ricochet (Chance to Guarantee) Standard - 45° to 60° US CA - 60° to 67.5° Alaska/PR - 60° to 67.5° Jutland and Daring - 60° to 67.5° RN CL tier 6 to 10 - 60° to 75° Stalingrad - 55° to 65° And now these new CAs are 50° to 65° (They were 55° to 65° but this above change was actually a nerf, I just read it incorrectly)
