In a few occasions now I have as a CV tried chase after torpedobombers and bombers that are returning back to their carrier after a strike, and for a short while (5-10 sec) they seem to have gained a speed boost flying a lot faster than my chasing fighters, and then return back to their normal slow speed. Is it a button for this that I am not aware of, an ability of some sort that I am not aware of. Or is it simply a bug or in my mind that this is happening?

Well... I think it's supposed to happen, but in my opinion this is a bug yes. This happens when you do like in wot (pre-load different ammunition by tapping 1 or 2 once) However unlike in wot, this reloads the other ammo immediatly after the first gun fires. And not after ALL gun's have fired. So pre-loading or pre-choosing what ammo to load after the current shell is kind of broken and will only allow one turret to eject it's shells before reloading on all guns starts. Just shoot all the guns and then double click 1 or 2 to switch ammunition type.
